IN commencing the seventh year of our editorial labours, and on entering upon a new scene,' we feel great pleasure in returning thanks to our clerical and lay friends for the support which we have hitherto received from them. We trust that it is not necessary to assure our readers of our steadfast adherence to the doctrine and discipline of the United Church of these kingdoms. In all respect and deference we refer them to our former efforts to carry out the doctrines of the Reformation; and we now declare our firm determination, in the fear of the Lord, to continue our most strenuous efforts in the same righteous cause, always bearing in mind the prophetical words of that illustrious servant and holy martyr of Christ, Bishop Latimer, "Be of good cheer, brother; we shall this day kindle such a torch in England, as I trust, by God's grace, shall never be extinguished."

The evil days in which Bishop Latimer uttered these words seem again about to fall upon this Church and nation, as a righteous judgment for despising the long-suffering of God. The Church is, at present, truly in a state militant. It is again, to use the words of another martyr, ground down between the upper and the nether mill-stone of Popery and Dissent. The Papists have condescended to unite with the dissenting interest in a simultaneous crusade against the Church, which, trusting in
