Prayers On Scripture Readings, FOR PRIVATE OR PASTORAL USE AND FAMILY DEVOTION. BY THE REV. J. D. KNOWLES, M.A., VICAR OF GLOSSOP London: W. SKEFFINGTON & SON, 163, PICCADILLY, W.. TO THE REV. JAMES ECKERSLEY, M.A., VICAR OF Wednesbury, IN HEARTFELT GRATITUDE FOR MUCH KINDLY CRITICISM AND ENCOURAGEMENT THIS BOOK IS INSCRIBED BY HIS SINCERE FRIEND, THE AUTHOR. Preface. THE lack of something in the character of the following pages has long been felt by the Author and several friends. As a rule, when a Reading of Scripture forms a part of the Family devotion, the succeding Prayers have no connection with the subject of the Lesson. The following humble attempt to supply this want is affectionately submitted to the notice of fellow-churchmen. There are special Readings, with Prayers thereon, for each week of the Christian Year, chiefly taken from the Epistle or Gospel for the Sunday. The Sunday Readings may, however, be used on any day within the week, the other portions of the Book being taken either consecutively, or according to subject for the intervening days. Full indices to the subjects have been added, in order to facilitate the selection of Readings to be used in the course of Pastoral Visitation. The writer would beg most earnestly to deprecate any imputation of a design to supersede or in any way interfere with the perfect and exquisite Collects of the Prayer Book, which, in every Churchman's Household, will of course find a place in the family devotion. |
