was the lamentation of the celebrated ERASMUS, that the eighth folio volume of his works fhould be taken up in anfwers to objections that had been made to his former writings. His words on the occafion were thefe: "Octavum occupent apolo giæ. Me, miferum! et hæ juftum volumen efficient."
Confidering the little that I have written, and the fubject I have undertaken, I cannot forbear from lamenting, that there fhould be a neceffity for the publication of a fecond volume, to maintain the doctrines advanced in my first. And having no defire to engage in controverfy, (a fpecies of writing, as it is generally managed, which is too apt to call into exercise those qualities of the mind, which the Christian religion was intended to bring under subjection)
