THE following Work, intended as a Guide and Companion to the youthful Student, in the perusal of those standard works upon historical subjects which are generally received, and usually read in the course of education, proposes to furnish an outline of facts, to be filled up by the perusal of the works alluded to in the Tables. The great aim being to make the coup d'œil a faithful index to the historical importance of the period of time illustrated in each, the most prominent features only will be marked; the blanks left may easily be filled up by the reader who wishes to make them a repository for those lists of Kings, &c. whose names only have decended to our times. Ancient Profane History will be dated from the dispersion of the descendants of Noah from Babel, B. C. 2247. The interval between this date and the Christian era may be divided into three grand periods; 1st, the Fabulous Period, reaching to the first Olympiad, B. C. 776, and containing about 1471 years. Of this period there are few records to be depended upon except those contained in the Sacred writings. 2d, The Obscure Period comprises the time between the first Olympiad, B.
