the trouble seem little before thee that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. Ps. xxv, 14. The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant. Ps. Cv, 8-10. He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations: Which Covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a Lev. xxiv, 8. Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant. 2 Sam. xxiii, 5. Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure. Isa. xxiv, 5. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Isa. lv, 3. Incline your ear, and law, and to Israel for an everlast-soul shall live; and I will make come unto me: hear, and your ing covenant. Isa. Ivi, 10. For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD, that hath mercy on thee. Jer. xxxiii, 20, 21, 25. AND THEREFORE IT IS CALLED AN EVERLASTING COVENANT. Gen. ix, 16. Moreover I with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them. . . . THE OBLIGATION OF KEEPING GOD'S COVENANT, AND DANGER OF VIOLAT ING IT. Gen. xvii, 9, 10, 14. And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you, and thy seed after thee; Every man-child among you shall be circumcised. And the uncircumcised man-child, whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant. Exod. xix, 5. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine. Lev. xxvi, 15. And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my Covenant. transgressed the covenant of the Josh. xxiii, 16. Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses Deut. iv, 23. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies. Ps. xliv, 17. All this is come upon us yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant. Ps. lv, 20. Jer. xi, 3. And say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant. Jer. xiv, 21. Do not abhor us, for thy name's sake; do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us. Jer. xxii, 9. Then they shall answer, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God, and worshipped other gods, and served them. Jer. xxxi, 32. Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day that I took them by the hand, to bring them out of the land of Egypt: (which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD.) Jer. xxxiv, 18. And I will give the men that have transgressed shall he break the covenant, and him king, whose oath he despised, Dan. xi, 28, 30, 32. Then shall have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. MAN MAKING COVENANT WITH GOD. covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the cove nant. 2 Chron. XV, 12. And they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul. 2 Chron. xxiii, 16. And Jehoiada made a covenant between him, and between all the people, and between the king, that they should be the LORD's people. 2 Chron. xxix, 10. Now it is in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that his fierce wrath may turn away from us. 2 Chron. xxxiv, 31, 32. And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book. And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. Neh. ix, 38. And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it. THE NEW COVENANT. Isa. ix, 21. As for me, this is LORD; My Spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for Deut. xxix, 10-15. Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel, Your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water; That thou shouldest enter into cove-my covenant with them, saith the nant with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day: That he may establish thee to-day for a people unto himself, and that he may be unto thee a God, as he hath said unto thee, and as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath; But with him that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day. ever. Jer. xxxi, 31-33. Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah; Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them Jer. xxxii, 40. And I will make an everlasting Covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For if that first corenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For, finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according their fathers in the day when I to the covenant that I made with took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; Ezek. xvi, 8. Gal. iii, 17, 18. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Gal. iv, 24, 25. Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. Heb. viii, 6-10, 13. But now hath be obtained a more excellent Ghost also is a witness to us: for WONDERFUL COVENANTS. Job v, 23. JEWS FORBIDDEN TO MAKE Exod. xxiii, 32. Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. thy God shall deliver them before Deut. vii, 2. And when the LORD thee, thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them. Hosea xii, 1. Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies a covenant with the Assyrians, and desolation; and they do make and oil is carried into Egypt. HUNGER Gen. xxv, 30. And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. DIET AND DRESS. days with the disciples which were at Damascus. Acts, xxvii, 33, 34. It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Mark vili, 1-4. In those days, the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat. Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat; And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. And his disciples answered him, Fromwhence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? Luke iv, 2-4. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Acts, ix, 19. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine handmaid bath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me: Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength when thou goest on thy way. But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice: so he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed. 2 Sam. xii, 17, 20. And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth; but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and, when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat. 1 Kings xiii, 7-9, 15-17. And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: For so was it charged mo by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee; neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place. For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. 1 Kings xxi, 4. ... [And Ahab] laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread. FASTING IN CONNECTION WITH RELIGION. Isa. Ivili, 3-8. Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high. Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him' wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? IS not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily; and thy righeousness shall go before thee: the glory of the LORD shall be thy rere-ward. Jer. xiv, 12. When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt-offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence. Zech. vii, 5. Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, eren to me? Zech. viii, 19. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peaco. Matt. vi, 16-18. Moreover, when ye fast, be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face, That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. Mark ii, 18-20. And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bride-chamber fast while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. FASTS BY DIVINE AUTHORITY. Joel 1, 14. Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD Jonah ill, 5-8. So the people of your God, and cry unto the LORD. Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast,and put on sackcloth, Joel ii. 12. 15, 16. Therefore also from the greatest of them even to now, saith the LORD, Turn ye even the least of them. For word camo to me with all your heart, and unto the king of Nineveh; and ho with fasting, and with weeping, arose from his throne, and he laid and with mourning. So we fasted, and besought our God for this; and he was entreated of us. Ezra, x, 6. Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the trangression of them that had been carried away. bread, neither came flesh nor wino Dan. x, 3. And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty neither eat bread nor drink water, days and forty nights: I did because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. of the LORD came again the second 1 Kings xix, 7, 8.
