So little ambitious is the humble individual, the compiler of" the Scriptural Commentary," of obtruding himself on the literary world in the garb, or with the pretensions of an author, that he voluntarily, and at once disclaims all right to such a rank, and to such pretensions. And he is desirous, and it has been his earnest study, that even his preface (which is often a production of much labour, and provident care to authors) should, as introductory to "the Scriptural Commentary," assimilate itself as much as possible to the complexion, and unassuming character of the work itself, and be, like it, a mere compilation also. Thus unobtrusive as an author himself, the writer of the following sheets will proceed, without further apology, to quote such authorities, from the most approved theological writers, and learned divines, ancient, as well as modern, as will show the estimation in which a methodical reading of the Scriptures, by means of parallel passages, was held by some of the wisest and best of men. So that it may be said by those (if any there be) who look with jealousy or distrust, on that notoriety which attaches to an individual, like the present writer, starting unexpectedly from his native retirement, or obscurity, and appearing to the casual observer, as claiming to himself the title and importance of an author,-it may be said, "His authorship consists in the drudgery of persevering labour, and the inglorious toil of unmixed compilation from beginning to end, a task within the reach and compass of the most ordinary capacity." "It is the fate of those" (says Doctor Johnson in the opening of his preface to his Dictionary of the English language) "who toil at the lower employments of life, to be rather driven by fear of evil, than attracted by the prospect of good; to be exposed to censure without hope of praise; to be disgraced by miscarriage, or punished for neglect; where success would have been without applause, and diligence without reward." 66 Among these unhappy mortals" (continues the great English moralist) "is the writer of dictionaries, whom mankind have considered, not as the pupil, but the slave of science, the pioneer of literature, doomed only to remove rubbish, and clear obstructions |
