CHAPTER V.

1 THIS is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that 2 God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name 3 Adam, in the day when they were created. And Adam lived an

To call upon, &c.] Thou hast avouched the Lord this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice. And the Lord hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments. Deut. xxvi. 17, 18. And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord (said Elijah). 1 Kings xviii. 24. I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and call upon the name of the Lord. Ps. cxvi. 17. I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, &c. One shall say, I am the Lord's, another shall call himself by the name of Jacob, and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel. Isa. xliv. 4, 5. Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah. Isa. xlviii. 1. We are thine, thou never barest rule over them (our adversaries), "they were not called by thy name" (or "thy name was not called upon them"). Isa. lxiii. 19. In those days (" of the appearance of the Branch") Judah shall be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely, and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness (or Jehovah Tsidkenu). Jer. xxxiii. 16. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered. Joel ii. 32. For then will I turn to the people a pure "language," that they may all call upon the name of the Lord to serve him with one "consent" (or "shoulder"). Zeph. iii. 9. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts ii. 21. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Rom. x. 13. (Paul) Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours. 1 Cor. i. 2. For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. Ephes. iii. 14, 15.

CHAP. V.-1"The book of the generations," &c.] See chap. ii. 4. These are the generations

of Noah, &c. Gen. vi. 9. Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, &c. Gen. x. The

Which was the son of Cainan (of the genealogy of Christ), which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech (&c. to Cainan), which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God. Luke iii. 36, 37, 38.

In the likeness of God.] See chap. i. 26, 27. Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright, but they have sought out many inventions. Eccles. vii. 29. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them. Eccles. xii. 1. For a man, indeed, ought not to cover his head forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God. 1 Cor. xi. 7. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Cor. iii. 18. (See) that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephes. iv. 24. (Ye) have put on the new man which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him. Coloss. iii. 10. Who (Christ) being the brightness of his glory and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high. Heb. i. 3. Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? Heb. xii. 9.

2 Male and female, &c.] See chap. i. 27. And did not he make one? yet had he the residue of the spirit; and wherefore one? that he might seek a godly seed, therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. Mal. ii. 15.

Their name Adam, &c.] See chap. ii. 15. 23. And (God) hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth. Acts xvii. 26.

hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: And the days of Adam 4 after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters; And all the days that Adam lived were 5 nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. And Seth lived an 6 hundred and five years, and begat Enos: And Seth lived after he 7 begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve 8 years and he died. And Enos lived ninety years, and begat 9 Cainan And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred 10

3 In his own likeness.] Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one! Job xiv. 4. What is man that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman that he should be righteous? how much more abominable and filthy is man which drinketh iniquity like water? Job xv. 14. 16. How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? Job xxv. 4. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand and seek God; they are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy, there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Ps. xiv. 2, 3. Behold (said David), I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Ps. li. 5. And the angel answered and said unto "her" (Mary), the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Luke i. 35. That which is born of the flesh is flesh. John iii. 6. Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. Rom. v. 12. All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. 1 Cor. xv. 39. Among whom (the heathen) also we all had our conversation in times past, in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh, and of the mind, and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. Ephes. ii. 3.

Called his name Seth, &c.] See chap. iv. 25. 4 The days of Adam, &c.] Adam, Sheth, Enosh. 1 Chron. i. 1. See verse 1.

He begat sons, &c.] See chap. v. 7. 10. 13. 19. 22. 26. 30. Chap. i. 28. And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. And you, be ye fruitful and multiply, bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply therein. Gen. ix. 1.7. And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years and begat Salah. Gen. xi. 12. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Ps. exxvii. 3. Rid me and deliver me from the hand of strange children, that our sons

may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner-stones polished after the similitude of a palace. Ps. exliv. 12.

5 Nine hundred, &c.] See verse 8. 11. 14. 17, &c. Choose life that both thou and thy seed may live. That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him; for he is thy life and the length of thy days. Deut. xxx. 20. The days of our years are threescore years and ten, and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow, for it is soon cut off and we fly away. Ps. xc. 10.

And he died, &c.] See verse 8. 11. 14, &c. Chap. iii. 19. For we must needs die and are as water spilt on the ground which cannot be gathered up again. 2 Sam. xiv. 14. For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living. Job xxx. 23. None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him; for he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish. Ps. xlix. 7. 10. What man is he that liveth and shall not see death? Shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Ps. lxxxix. 48. For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know not any thing. Let thy garments be always white. Eccles. ix. 5. 8. Man goeth to his long home and the mourners go about the streets. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Eccles. xii. 5. 7. Behold all souls are mine. The soul that sinneth it shall die. Ezek. xviii. 4. Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned, after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. Rom. v. 12. 14. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead; for as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 1 Cor. xv. 21, 22. It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. Heb. ix. 27.

i. 1. (Enoch), which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Enos. Luke iii. 37, 38.

22" Walked with God" &c.] Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. Gen. vi. 9. I am the Almighty God (said God to Abrum), walk before me, and be thou perfect. Gen. xvii. 1. And he (Abraham) said unto "me" ("his servant') the Lord before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee and prosper thy way. Gen. xxiv. 40. And he (Israel) blessed Joseph and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk-The angel which redeemed me from all evil-bless the lads, &c. (Joseph's sons). Gen. xlviii. 15. Then said the Lord unto Moses, behold I will rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or no. Exod. xvi. 4. And I will walk among "you" ("who keep the commandments") and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. Lev. xxvi. 12. Ye shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you. Deut. v. 33. Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments. Deut. xiii. 4. The Lord shall establish thee an holy people to himself. If thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways. Deut. xxviii. 9. If "thy" children ("David's children") take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth, with all their heart, and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel. 1 Kings ii. 4. I beseech thee, O Lord, remember now (said Hezekiah) how I have walked before thee in truth. 2 Kings xx. 3. I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Ps. xvi. 8. But as for me I will walk in mine

integrity. Ps. xxvi. 11. For thou hast delivered my soul from death, that I may walk before God in the light of the living. Ps. lvi. 13. I will walk in thy truth, O Lord. Ps. lxxxvi. 11. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. Ps. cxvi. 9. Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. Ps. cxxviii. 1. Draw me, we will run after thee. Cant. i. 4. The ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them. Hos. xiv. 9. Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Amos iii. 3. For all people will walk, every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God, for ever and ever. In that day, saith the Lord, I will assemble her that halteth. Micah iv. 5, 6. He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. Micah vi. 8. He (Levi) walked with me in peace and equity. Mal, ii, 6. And they were both (Zacharias and Elizabeth) righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. Luke i. 6. Then had the churches rest; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied. Acts ix. 31. There is, therefore, now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit. Rom. viii. 1. As the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. 1 Cor. vii. 17. Ye are the temple of the living God, as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them. 2 Cor. vi. 16. See, then, that ye walk circumspectly. Eph. v. 15. (We do not cease to pray for you) that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing. Col. i. 10. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without. Col. iv. 5. (We exhorted) that ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. 1 Thess. ii. 12. We exhort you, by the Lord Jesus, that,

Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five 23 years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God 24 took him. And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven 25 years, and begat Lamech: And Methuselah lived after he begat 26 Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred 27 sixty and nine years: and he died. And Lamech lived an hun- 28 dred eighty and two years, and begat a son: And he called his 29 name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed. And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred 30 ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the 31 days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years and he died. And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat 32 Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk, and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. 1 Thess. iv. 1. By faith Enoch was translated, that he should not see death, and was not found, because God had translated him; for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God; but without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Heb. xi. 5, 6. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanseth us from all sin. 1 John i. 7.

24 Walked with God.] See verse 22. For God took him.] And it came to pass, as they still went on and talked (Elijah and Elisha), that behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder, and Elijah went up with a whirlwind into heaven. 2 Kings ii. 11. And Jesus said unto him (the thief on the cross), Verily I say unto thee, to-day shalt thou be with me in paradise. Luke xxiii. 43. See verse 22. And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of " these" ("the false teachers"), saying, behold, the Lord cometh, with ten thousand of his saints, to execute judgment upon all. Jude 14, 15.

29 He called his name Noah.] (Or Noe, or rest, or comfort.) But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. These are the generations of Noah, &c. Gen. vi. 8, 9. And Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. Gen. vii. 23. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. Gen. ix. 24. For this is as the waters of Noah unto me (the Lord), for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn, that I would not be wroth with thee (the nation of the Gentiles), nor rebuke

thee. Isa. liv. 9. Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in "it" ("the land"), they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness. Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither son nor daughEzek. xiv. 14. 20. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Matt. xxiv. 37. Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech. Luke iii. 36. And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, &c. until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Luke xvii. 26, 27. By faith Noe being warned of God of things not seen as yet, " moved with fear" (or, " being wary") prepared an ark for the saving of his house. Heb. xi. 7. "Which" ("the spirits in prison") sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited, in the days of Noe, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is eight souls, were saved by water. 1 Pet. iii. 20. And (God) spared not the old world, but saved Noe, the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly. 2 Pet. ii. 5.

Because of the ground.] Cursed is the ground for thy sake (said God to Adam.) Gen. iii. 17. And now art thou cursed from the earth. When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength. Gen. iv. 11, 12.

32 Shem, &c.] And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Gen. vi. 10. In the self-same day, entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons, with them, into the ark. Gen. vii. 13. And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth. These are the three sons of Noah, and of them was

CHAPTER VI.

1 AND it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of 2 the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of

God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they 3 took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said,

the whole earth overspread. Gen. ix. 18, 19. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant. Gen. ix. 22. 27. These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and unto them were sons born after the flood. Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth, the elder, even to him were children born. These are the families of the sons of Noah; and by these were the nations divided in the earth, after the flood. Gen. x. 1. 21. 32. Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, &c. 1 Chron. i. 4-28. And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, &c. Luke iii. 23-38.

CHAP. VI. 2 The sons of God saw, &c.] See chap. iv. 26. And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my first born; and I say unto thee, let my son go, that he may serve me. And if thou refuse to let him go, behold I will slay thy son, even thy first born. Exod. iv. 22, 23. Ye are (said Moses) the children of the Lord your God. Deut. xiv. 1. I have said, ye are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High; but ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes. Ps. lxxxii. 6. 7. Doubtless thou art our Father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not. Thou, O Lord, art our Father, our Redeemer, "thy name is from everlasting" (or," our Redeemer from everlasting, is thy name"). Isa. lxiii. 16. Judah hath profaned the holiness of the Lord, which he "loved" (or, "ought to love"), and hath married the daughter of a strange god. Mal. ii. 11. We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. Jesus said unto "them" ("the Jews"), if God were your Father, ye would love me; for I proceeded forth from God, neither came I of myself, but he sent me. John viii. 41, 42. Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children. That is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God. Rom. ix. 7, 8. And I will be a father unto you, and ye shall be my sons, and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Cor. vi. 18.

Saw the daughters, &c.] Having eyes full of "adultery" (or, "of an adulteress "), and

that cannot cease from sin, beguiling unstable souls, an heart they have exercised with covetous practices, cursed children. 2 Pet. ii. 14. That they were fair, &c.] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was "pleasant" (or, “ a desire") to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat. Gen. iii. 6. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured; and it came to pass, after these things, that his master's (Potiphar's) wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and she said, lie with me. Gen. xxxix. 6, 7. And from the roof (of the king's house) he (David) saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. 2 Sam. xi. 2. I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? Job xxxi. 1. The lust of the eyes is not of the Father, but of the world. 1 John ii. 16.

And they took them wives, &c.] Thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, &c. (said Abraham to his servant). Gen. xxiv. 3. And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me? Gen. xxvii. 46. The Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God; lest thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring, &c. Exod. xxxiv. 14. 16. Neither shalt thou make marriages with them. Thy daughter thou shalt not give to his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. For "they" ("the Canaanites") will turn away thy son from following me. Deut. vii. 3, 4. If ye shall make marriages with "them" ("the Canaanites") and go in unto them, and they to you, know for a certainty, that they shall be snares, and traps, unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish, &c. Josh. xxiii. 12, 13. The people of Israel have not separated themselves from the people of the lands; for they have taken of their daughters, for themselves, and for their sons. Now, therefore, give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your Ezra ix. 1, 2. 12. And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people. Shall we, then, hearken unto you, to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying
