These all (the excellent men of old time) died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth; for they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country: and truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for he hath prepared for them a city. He. xi. 9-16. For a thousand

years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up: in the evening, it is cut down and withered. For we are consumed by thy anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee; our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in thy wrath; we spend our years as a tale that is told. Ps. xc. 3-9. Ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. Ja. iv. 14.

And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem ? I am this day fourscore years old, and can I discern between good and evil? Can thy servant taste what I eat, or what I drink? Can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? Wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king. 2 Sa. xix. 32-35. Enquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to search of their fathers; for we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are as a shadow. Job viii. 8, 9. Fainted.] Who is the wise man, that may understand this? And who is he to whom the mouth of the Lord hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what, the land perisheth and is burnt up like a wilderness, that none passeth through? Je. ix. 12. The field is wasted, the land mourneth, for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vine dressers for the wheat, and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished. (saith our Lord) in that which is least, is

faithful also in much; and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. If, therefore, ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?
