CHAPTER XXX.

AND when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel 1 envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else

them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. Ge. xlix. 7. And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi (the mother of Moses). Ex. ii. 1. Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves to-day to the Lord, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day. Er. xxxii. 26. 29. And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah: they shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar. xxxiii. 8. 10.

35 Called his name Judah.] And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid; Gad, and Asher. Ge. xxxv. 26. And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren. And Judah saw a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her. And she conceived, and bare a son, and he called his name Er. Ge. xxxviii. 1, 2, 3. And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever. Ge. xliii. 8, 9. Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh. How shall I go up to my father (Israel), and the lad be not with me? Ge. xliv. 18. 34. And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zarah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. Ge. xlvi. 12. Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee. The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. His (Judah's) eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk. Ge. xlix. 8. 10. 12. And

this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, Lord, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies. De. xxxiii. 7. Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler, but the birthright was Joseph's. 1 Ch. v. 2. Abraham begat Isaac, and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren. Mat. i. 2.

CHAP. XXX.-1 Rachel saw.] See chap. xxix. 31. and com.

Rachel envied her sister.] And his brethren envied him (Joseph). Ge. xxxvii. 11. And Moses said unto "him" (“Joshua," who said that Moses forbad Eldad and Medad to prophesy in the camp), Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them! Nu. xi. 29. And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and daughters, portions: but unto Hannah (his wife) he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the Lord had shut up her womb. And her adversary (Peninnah) also provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons? 1 Sa. i. 4, 5, 6. 8. "They" ("the Israelites") envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the Lord. Ps. cvi. 16. Envy (is) the rottenness of the bones. Pr. xiv. 30. Who is able to stand before envy? Pr. xxvii. 4. Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. Ec. iv. 4. For whereas there is among you envying: are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 1 Co. iii. 3. Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like. They which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Ga. v. 21. For we ourselves were sometimes living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. Tit. iii. 3. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. Ja. iii. 14. Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? Ja. iv. 5.

Or else I die. And they journeyed from

2 I die. And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit 3 of the womb? And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have

Beth-el; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. And Rachel (in bearing Benjamin) died. Ge. xxxv. 16. 19. And his (Joseph's) brethren envied him. Ge. xxxvii. 11. And if "thou" ("the Lord") deal thus with "me" ("Moses"), kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness. Nu. xi. 15. But he himself (Elijah, flying from Jezebel to Beer-sheba) went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. 1 Ki. xix. 4. After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day. And Job spake and said, Let the day perish wherein I was born. Why died I not from the womb? Why did I not give up the ghost ? Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul? which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad when they can find the grave. Job iii. 1, 2, 3. 11. 20. 22. Wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. Job v. 2. Who is he that will plead with me? For now if I hold my tongue, shall give up the ghost. Job xiii. 19. Cursed be the day wherein I was born (said Jeremiah): let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed. Wherefore came I forth out of the womb, to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame? Je. xx. 14. 18. Now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live. And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. Jon. iv. 3. 8. Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation, not to be repented of; but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 2 Co. vii. 10.

2 Anger was kindled, &c.] And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me? Ge. xxxi. 36. And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw "the calf" ("the golden calf"), and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables (of the laws) out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. Er. xxxii. 19. Whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. Mat. v. 22. And when he (Jesus) had looked

round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man (that had the withered hand), Stretch forth thine hand: and he stretched it out, and his hand was restored whole as the other. Mar. iii. 5. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Ep. iv. 26.

Am I in God's stead ?] And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. Ge. xvi. 2. And Isaac intreated the Lord for his wife, because she was barren and the Lord was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived. Ge. xxv. 21. And Joseph said unto "them" ("his brethren," who had fallen down before his face), Fear not: for am I in the place of God? Ge. 1. 19. The Lord had shut up her (Hannah's) womb. 1 Sa. i. 5. The barren (said Hannah) hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. The Lord killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. 1 Sa. ii. 5, 6. Am I a God (said the king of Israel), to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? 2 Ki. v. 7.

Withheld from thee.] If ye hearken to these judgments, and keep and do them, he (the Lord) will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee. Thou shalt be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle. De. vii. 13, 14. He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Ps. cxiii. 9. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Ps. cxxvii. 3. And she (Elisabeth) spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art "thou" ("Mary") among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Lu. i. 42.

And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son's mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes. 16 And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee with my son's mandrakes.
