14 And he told Laban all these things. And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him 15 the space of a month. And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell 16 me, what shall thy wages be? And Laban had two daughters:

the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was 17 Rachel. Leah was tender-eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and 18 well-favoured. And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve

14 Thou art my bone.] See verse 12. and And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man. Ge. ii. 23. We be brethren (said Abram to Lot). Ge. xiii. 8. And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? Ge. xxix. 15. Remember (said Abimelech to the Shechemites) that I am your bone and your flesh. Ju. ix. 2. Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, We are thy bone and thy flesh. 2 Sa. v. 1. Ye are my brethren (said David to Zadok and Abiathar the priests), ye are my bones and my flesh wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king? And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone and of my flesh? 2 Sa. xix. 12, 13. Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. Mi. vii. 5. For we are members of his (Christ's) body, of his flesh, and of his bones. Ep. v. 30. 15 Tell me, what shall thy wages, &c.] And he (Laban) said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it. Ge. xxx. 28. And your father (said Jacob to his wives) hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times. Ge. xxxi. 7. 16 Was Leah.] Leah was tender-eyed: and it came to pass, that in the morning it was Leah (substituted as wife for Rachel). Ge. xxix. 17. 25. And Leah conceived and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben. Ge. xxix. 32. And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son (Zebulun). Ge. xxx. 19. And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock. Ge. xxxi. 4. And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost. Ge. xxxiii. 2. The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's first-born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar and Zebulun. Ge. xxxv. 23. These be

the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padan-aram, with his daughter Dinah. Ge. xlvi. 15. There (in the field of Mackpelah) I (Jacob) buried Leah. Ge. xlix. 31. The Lord make "the woman” (“Ruth") that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel. Ru iv. 11.

17 Rachel was, &c.] See verses 6. 12. And Jacob loved Rachel. Ge. xxix. 18. And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister. Ge. xxx. 1. And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of thy womb? And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened unto her, and opened her womb. Ge. xxx. 2. 22. And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Beth-lehem; and Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day. The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. Ge. xxxv. 19, 20. 24. The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife, Joseph and Benjamin; these are the sons of Rachel which were born to Jacob. Ge. xlvi. 19. 22. And as for me (Jacob), when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath. Ge, xlviii. 7. When "thou" ("Saul") art departed from from me (Samuel) to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre, in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah, &c.; thou shalt go on forward from thence, &c. 1 Sa. x. 23 Thus saith the Lord, A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping: Rachel weeping for her children, because they were not. Je. xxxi. 15. In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. Mat. ii. 18.

Beautiful and well-favoured.] See chap. xi. 11. and com. And the damsel (Rebekah) was very fair to look upon. Ge. xxiv. 16. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord shall be praised. Pr. xxxi. 30.

18 Loved Rachel, &c.] And Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. Ge. xxix. 20. 30.

I will serve thee, &c.] I served thee (said Jacob to Laban) fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle. Ge.

thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. And Laban 19 said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. And Jacob served seven 20 years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my 21 wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her. And 22 Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast. And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his 23 daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her. And 24

xxxi. 41. Ask me (said Shechem to the sons of Jacob) never so much dowry, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me; but give me the damsel (Dinah) to wife. Ge. xxxiv. 12. If a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, he shall surely endow her to be his wife; if her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. Ex. xxii. 16, 17. And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines. 2 Sa. iii. 14. So I bought her to me (the adulteress) for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley. Ho. iii. 2. Jacob fled into the country of Syria; and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep. Ho. xii. 12.

19 It is better.] They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. Ps. xii. 2. Then said I (Isaiah), Woe is me, for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes. Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate. Is. vi. 5. 10, 11. ⚫ 20 Served seven years.] Give me my wives and my children (said Jacob to Laban), for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee. Ge. xxx. 26. Israel served for a wife. Ho. xii, 12.

For the love he had, &c.] And Isaac took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. Ge. xxiv. 67. Love is strong as death; many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. Ca. viii. 6, 7. (Charity) beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 1 Co, xiii. 7. The love of Christ constraineth us. 2 Co. v. 14. Walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. Ep. v. 2.

21 Give me my wife.] When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they

came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Mat. i. 18.

My days are fulfilled.] See verses 18. 20; and chap. xxxi. 41.

22 And made a feast.] So his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do. And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down (the feast lasted seven days), What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle. Ju. xiv. 10. 18. Ruth the Moabitess have. I purchased to be my wife. So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife. Ru. iv. 10. 13. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son; the servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding (feast) was furnished with guests. Mat. xxii. 2. 10. Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom: and while they (the foolish virgins) went to buy (oil for their lamps), the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Mat. xxv. 1. 10. And there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, (where Jesus changed the water into wine, and) when the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was, he (the governor of the feast) saith unto him (the bridegroom), Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. John ii. 1. 9, 10. Blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. Re. xix. 9.

23 Brought her to him.] It is my master (said Abraham's servant to Rebekah): therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. Ge. xxiv. 65. And she (Tamar) put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife. When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face. Ge. xxxviii. 14, 15.

Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an hand25 maid. And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou 26 beguiled me? And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, 27 to give the younger before the firstborn. Fulfil her week, and we

will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with 28 me yet seven other years. And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her 29 week and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also. And

Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her 30 maid. And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel

25 In the morning, &c.] Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 1 Co. iii. 13.

Wherefore then hast thou, &c.] Thy brother (Jacob) came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing: And he (Esau) said, Is he not rightly named Jacob? he took away my birthright; and behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. Ge. xxvii. 35, 36. And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. Ju. i. 7. Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth much more the wicked and the sinner. Pr. xi. 31. With what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the Law and the Prophets. Mat. vii. 2. 12. "He" ("Jesus") saith unto "him" ("Peter") the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. John xxi. 17. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Re. iii. 19.

27 Her week.] And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made: and God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it. Ge. ii. 2, 3. And he (Noah) stayed yet other seven

days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark and the dove came in to him in the evening, and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off. And he stayed yet other seven days, and sent forth the dove, which returned not again unto him any more. Ge. viii. 10, 11, 12. Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time. Le. xviii. 18. So his father went down unto the woman. Samson said unto "them" ("the thirty companions" who were with him), I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets, and thirty change of garments. Ju. xiv. 10. 12. Take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. Mal. ii. 15. For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh. Mat. xix. 5. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some have coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Ti. vi. 10.

29 Bilhah his handmaid.] See verse 34. and

Bilhah.] And she (Rachel) said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her. And Bilhah Rachel's maid conceived again, and bare Jacob a second son (the former was Dan); and Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali. Ge. xxx. 3.7, 8. And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali. Ge. xxxv. 25. These are the ge nerations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpab, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. Ge. xxxvii. 2.

30 He loved also Rachel.] See verse 20, and com. And when the Lord saw that Leah was

hated, he opened her womb. Ge. xxix. 31. And we (Joseph's brethren) said unto "my

If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be her's that was hated: then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn. De. xxi. 15, 16. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Mat. vi. 24. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Mat. x. 37. If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Lu. xiv. 26. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. John xii. 25.

(for Merab, who should have been given to David, was given to Adriel, the Meholathite). 1 Sa. xviii. 17. 27. Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep. Ho. xii. 12.

31 The Lord saw.] And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people, which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. Ex. iii. 7.

Leah was hated.] See verse 30. and com. And Esau hated Jacob, because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him. Ge. xxvii. 41. And I (the Lord) hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. Mal. i. 3.

He opened her womb.] See chap. xvi. 1. and com.; xx. 18; xxi. 1, 2; xxv. 21. and com. And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die. And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? And God remembered Rachel; and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb. Ge. xxx. 1, 2. 22. And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not. And the angel of the Lord appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and Served with him.] See verse xviii. and com. bearest not; but thou shalt conceive, and bear And it came to pass, when Rachel had born a son. Ju. xiii. 2, 3. But unto Hannah he Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban, Send me (Elkanah, her husband) gave a worthy poraway, that I may go unto mine own place, tion; for he loved Hannah: but the Lord and to my country. (But) the Lord rechildren, for whom I have served thee, and membered her wherefore it came to pass, let me go for thou knowest my service which when the time was come about, that she bare I have done thee. Ge. xxx. 25, 26. Are we a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, not counted of him strangers? (said Rachel Because I have asked him of the Lord. 1 Sa. and Leah of their father.) For he hath sold i. 5. 19, 20. For this child I prayed (said us, and hath quite devoured also our money. Hannah to Eli); and the Lord hath given me served thee fourteen years for thy two my petition which I asked of him. 1 Sa. i. daughters (said Jacob to Laban), and six 27. And the Lord visited Hannah, so that years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed she conceived, and bare three sons and two my wages ten times. Ge. xxxi. 15. 41. And daughters. 1 Sa. ii. 21. 32 His name Reuben.] And Reuben heard it (the plot of his brothers against Joseph), and he delivered him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again. Ge. xxxvii. 21. And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again. Ge. xlvi. 8, 9. Reuben (said Jacob), thou art my first-born, my might, and the beginning of my strength; the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed. Ge. xlix. 3, 4.

Now the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright. 1 Ch. v. 1.

Looked upon my affliction.] And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters: for I know their sorrows. Ex. iii. 7. And when they heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped. Er. iv. 31. And when we cried unto the Lord God of our fathers, the Lord heard our voice, and looked on our affliction, and our labour, and our oppression. De. xxvi. 7. There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah. And she (Elkanah's wife) vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head. Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord. 1 Sa. i. 1. 11. 20. It may be (suid David) that the Lord will look on mine affliction, and that the Lord

will requite me good for his (Shimei's) cursing. 2 Sa. xvi. 12. Look upon mine afflic tion and my pain; and forgive all my sins Ps. xxv. 18. Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry. Ps. cvi. 44. Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me (said Elisabeth), to take away my reproach among men. Lu. i. 25.

33 Because the Lord hath heard.] And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan. And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali. Ge. xxx. 6. 8. And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar. And Leah said, God hath endued me with a good dowry: now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun. Ge. xxx. 18. 20.

Called his name Simeon, &c.] And it came to pass on the third day, when "they" ("the Shechemites") were sore (after circumcision), that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites Ge. xxxiv. 25. 30. The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's first-born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun. Ge. XXXV. 23. And he (Joseph) turned himself about from "them" (" his brethren"), and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes Ge. xlii. 24. Simeon and Levi are brethren: instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united for in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will they digged down a wall. Ge. xlix. 5, 6.
