land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and 16 he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not. Until I have done.] God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent. Hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good (said Balaam)? Nu. xxiii. 19. And, behold, this day I (Joshua) am going the way of all the earth; and ye know in all your hearts, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake concerning you. All are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof. Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the Lord your God promised you, so shall the Lord bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you. Jos. xxiii. 14, 15. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Mat. xxiv. 35.

16 And I knew it not.] And he (the Lord) said (unto Moses), Draw not nigh hither; put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. Ex. iii. 5. Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? Ex. xv. 11. And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua (by Jericho), Loose thy shoe from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy; and Joshua did so. Jos. v. 15. The Lord called Samuel; and he answered, Here am I. Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word of the Lord yet revealed unto him. 1 Sa. iii. 4. 7. Lo, he (the Lord) goeth by me, and I see him not; he passeth on also, but I perceive him not. Job ix. 11. For God speaketh once, yea, twice, yet man perceiveth it not. Job xxxiii. 14. O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places; the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Ps. lxviii. 35. Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself, and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. Is. viii. 13.

17 He was afraid.] Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. Ex. iii. 6. Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. Ju. xiii. 22. And when the disciples heard "it" ("the voice" out of the cloud at the time of Christ's transfiguration), they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. Mat. xvii. 6. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon "them" ("the shepherds at the birth of Christ"), and the

glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. Lu. ii. 9. Then they (the owners of the herd of swine) went out to see what was done, and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Lu. viii. 35. And when I saw "him" (that was "like unto the Son of man" in the midst of the seven candlesticks), I fell at his feet as dead, and he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not: I am the first and the last. Re. i. 17.

The house of God.] have set for a pillar

And this stone which I shall be God's house. Ge. xxviii. 22. And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there, and make thee an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee; and God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. Ge. xxxv. 1. 13. So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God. 2 Ch. v. 14. Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear than to give the sacrifice of fools. Ec. v. 1. But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God. (These things write I unto thee.) 1 Ti. iii. 15. Having an "High Priest" (“Jesus Christ”) over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience. He. x. 21. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God. 1 Pe. iv. 17.

18 Rose up early.] See chap. xxii. 3, and I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. Ps. cxix. 60. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. Ec. ix. 10.

Set it up for a pillar.] I am the God of Beth-el (said the angel of God to Jacob in a dream), where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me. And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar. Ge. xxxi. 13. 45. And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with "him" ("God"), even a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink-offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel's grave

19 oil upon the top of it. And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first. 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will

unto this day. Ge. xxxv. 14. 20. And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the Lord which he spake unto us. Jos. xxiv. 26, 27. "Then" ("after pursuing the Philistines from Mizpeh to Beth-car") Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer. 1 Sa. vii. 12. Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale; for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance; and he called the pillar after his own name; and it is called, unto this day, Absalom's Place. 2 Sa. xviii. 18. In "that day" (" of calling the Egyptians into the church") there shall be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the Lord. Is. xix. 19.

Poured oil.] And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle, and all that was therein, and sanctified them; and he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him to sanctify him. Le. viii. 10. 12. And it came to pass, on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them, that the princes of Israel brought their offering before the Lord. Nu. vii. 1.

19 The name of that place Beth-el.] See chap. xii. 8, and com. Arise up, go to Beth-el, and dwell there (said God to Jacob). Ge. xxxv. 1. And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me. Ge. xlviii. 3. And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el. And the man (whom the spies of Joseph saw coming out of Luz or Bethel) went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day (they smote the former city with the edge of the sword). Ju. i. 22. 26. And he (Jeroboam) set the one (golden calf) in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan. 1 Ki. xii. 29. Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend. And come not ye into Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-aven, nor swear, The Lord liveth. Ho. iv. 15. Yea "he" ("Jacob") had power over the angel, and prevailed; he wept and made supplication unto him; he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us; even the Lord of hosts, the Lord is his memorial.

Ho.

20 Vowed a vow.] I am the God of Beth-el, where thou vowedst a vow unto me. Ge. xxxi. 13. When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the Lord by thy estimation. Le. xxvii. 2. &c. When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the Lord: He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, &c. And the priest shall wave "them" ("the shoulder of the ram, the unleavened cake, and the unleavened wafer") for a wave-offering before the Lord. Nu. vi. 2. 20. And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will destroy their cities. And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. Nu. xxi. 2, 3. And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord's, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering. Ju. xi. 30, 31. And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and give her a man child ( seed of men), then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head, &c. Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord (said Hannah to Eli); as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord; and he (Eli) worshipped the Lord there. 1 Sa. i. 11. 28. And the men of Israel were distressed that day (by the Philistines), for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies: so none of the people tasted any food. 1 Sa. xiv. 24. For "thy servant" ("Absalom") vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then will serve the Lord. 2 Sa. xv. 8. See Ne. chaps. ix. and x. My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation; I will pay my vows before them that fear him. Ps. xxii. 25. Thy Vows are upon me, O God; I will render praises unto thee. Ps. lvi. 12. For thou, ✪ God, hast heard my vows, thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name; so will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows. Ps. Ixi. 5. &

I will go into thy house with burnt-offerings; I will pay thee my vows. Ps. lxvi. 13. Vow, and pay unto the Lord your God: let all that be round about him bring presents unto

keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, So that I come again to my father's house in 21 peace; then shall the Lord be my God: And this stone, which I 22 have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

CHAPTER XXIX.

THEN Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the 1

him that ought to be feared. Ps. lxxvi. 11. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people; I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people. Ps. cxvi. 14. 18. I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments. Ps. cxix. 106. Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed, until I find out a place for the Lord. Ps. cxxxii. 3. 5. Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear than to give the sacrifice of fools; for in the multitnde of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God. Ec. v. 1. 7. And the Lord shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the Lord in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a Vow unto the Lord, and perform it. Is. xix. 21. And of "his" ("Christ's") fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. John i. 16. And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea, for he had a vow. Ac. xviii. 18. And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying, That they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to-morrow, as though ye would inquire something more perfectly concerning him; and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him. Ac. xxiii. 12. 15.

If God will be with, &c.] See verse 15. and com. Will give me bread to eat.] And having food and raiment, let us be therewith content. 1 Ti. vi. 8.

21 I come again to my father's house.] Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me (said Jephthah), when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord's, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering. Ju. xi. 31. And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed, until the day he came again in peace; and Mephibosheth said unto the king, Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is

come again in peace unto his own house. 2 Sa. xix. 24. 30.

Then shall the Lord be my God.] The Lord is my strength and song (said Moses), and he is become my salvation; he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. Ex. xv. 2. Thou hast avouched the Lord this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice. De. xxvi. 17. For thy "servant” (“said Absalom") vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord. 2 Sa. xv. 8. And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules' burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burntoffering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the Lord. 2 Ki. v. 17.

22 I will surely give the tenth.] See chap. xiv. 20. and com. "He" (" who redeems his tithe") shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it; and if he change it all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed. Le. xxvii. 33. Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed that the field bringeth forth year after year. De. xiv. 22.

CHAP. XXIX.-1 Jacob went on his journey.] I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart; I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. Ps. cxix. 32. 60. Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart, for God now accepteth thy works. Ec. ix. 7.

Came into the land of the people of the east.] See chaps. xxii. 20. 23; xxiv. 10; xxv. 20; xxviii. 5. 7. And he (Balaam) took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel. Nu. xxiii. 7. And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them. Then all the Midianites, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, were gathered together, and went over and pitched in the valley of Jezreel. Ju. vi.

2 people of the east. And he looked, and behold, a well in the field, and lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the 3 well's mouth. And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and 4 put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place. And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they 5 said, Of Haran are we. And he said unto them, Know ye Laban 6 the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him. And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, 7 Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep. And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be

2 A well in the field.] And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water. Behold, I stand here (said Abraham's servant) by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water. xxiv. 11. 13. Now when Pharaoh heard "this thing" ("that Moses slew the Egyptian"), he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well. Ex. ii. 15. Now Jacob's well was there; Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. Whosoever (saith Jesus) drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John iv. 6. 14.

There were three flocks.] He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. Ps. xxiii. 2. Look not upon me (saith his Church to Christ), because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards, but mine own vineyard have I not kept. Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions? Ca. i. 6. 7. They (the Gentiles to whom Christ is sent) shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor sun smite them, for he that hath mercy on them shall

lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. Is. xlix. 10. The Lamb that is in the midst of the throne shall feed them (who came out of great tribulation), and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. Re. vii. 17.

4 Of Haran are we.] See chap. xi. 31; xxiv. 10; xxvii. 43; xxviii. 10. and com. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran; then came he out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charran. Ac. vii. 2. 4.

5 Son of Nahor.] See chap. xxiv. 24. 29. The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us (said Laban to Jacob). Ge. xxxi. 53.

6 Is he well?] And he (Joseph) asked "them" ("his brethren") of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive? Ge. xliii. 27. And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? 2 Sa. xx. 9.

Well.] And he (Israel) said to him (Joseph), Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with their flocks; and bring me word again? Ge. xxxvii. 14. And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law (Jethro), and did obeisance and kissed him, and they asked each other of their welfare. Ex. xviii. 7. And David (sent to visit his brethren) left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of his carriage, and ran into the army, and saluted his brethren. 1 Sa. xvii. 22. And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name. 1 Sa. xxv. 5.

7 Lo!] And let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not; as we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. Ga vi. 9, 10. See then that ye walk circumspectly, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Ep. v. 16.

gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them. And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered 8 together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep. And while he yet spake with them, Rachel 9 came with her father's sheep: for she kept them. And it came to 10 pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother. And Jacob kissed Rachel, 11 and lifted up his voice, and wept. And Jacob told Rachel that he 12 was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father. And it came to pass, when Laban heard 13 the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house.

8 Until all the flocks.] See verse 3. And they (the sons of Jacob) said unto them (Shechem and Hamor his father), We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised, for that were a reproach unto us. Ge. xxxiv. 14. And they set on for him (Joseph) by himself, and for them (his brethren) by themselves, and for the Egyptians which did eat with him by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. Ge. xliii. 32.

Roll the stone.] And they (the women at the sepulchre of Jesus) said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? Mar. xvi. 3. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. Lu. xxiv. 2.

9 Rachel came, &c.] See chap. xxiv. 15. and com. Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian; now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock; and Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter. Ex.ii. 15, 16. 21. Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth (saith the Church to Christ), where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions? If thou know not, O thou fairest among women (saith Christ to his Church), go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds' tents. Ca. i. 7, 8.

10 Rolled the stone.] Now the shepherds came and drove them" (the daughters of Jethro') away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. Ex. ii. 17.

Ge. xxvii. 26. And Esau ran to meet "him" (" Jacob"), and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him; and they wept. Ge. xxxiii. 4. And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his " brother" (" Benjamin"): and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. Ge. xliii. 30. And he (Joseph) wept aloud. And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. Moreover, he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them. Ge. xlv. 2. 14, 15. And the Lord said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses: and he went and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him. Ex. iv. 27. And Moses went out to meet his "father-inlaw" ("Jethro"), and did obeisance, and kissed him. Ex. xviii. 7. Salute Philologus

12 Her father's brother.] And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen, for we be brethren. Ge. xiii. 8. and com. And when Abram heard that his "brother" ("Lot") was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, and pursued "them" ("the four kings") unto Dan. And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot. Ge. xiv. 14. 16. and com.

And she ran and told, &c.] And the damsel (Rebekah) ran, and told them of her mother's house these things. Ge. xxiv. 28. and com.

13 He ran to meet him.] And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. And Laban ran out unto the man (Abraham's servant) unto the well. Ge. xxiv. 29.

Kissed him.] See verse 11. and com. And 11 Kissed Rachel.] And it came to pass, all the people went over Jordan. And when when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his the king (David) was come over, the king sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and kissed Barzillai (the old Gileadite, who had embraced him, and kissed him. Ge. xxix. 13. provided sustenance for him at Mahanaim), And his father Isaac said unto "him" ("Ja- and blessed him; and he returned unto his cob"), Come near now, and kiss me, my son. own place. 2 Sa. xix. 39.
