6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the even-tide, he and the elders of Ifrael, and put duft upon their heads.

7 And Joshua fard, Alas! O Lord GOD, wherefore haft thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to deftroy us? Would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other fide Jordan!

8 O LORD, what fhall I fay, when Ifrael turneth their backs betore their enemies?

9 For the Canaanites, and all the inhabitants of the land thall hear of it, and fhallen. viron us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

12 Therefore the children of Ifrael could not ftant hetore their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accurfed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye deftroy the accurfed from among you.

13 Up, fanctify the people, and fay, Sanctify yourfelves againft to-morrow; for thus faith the LORD God of Ifrael, There is an accurfed thing in the midft of thee,O Ifrael: thou canft not ftand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accurfed thing from among you.

JOSHUA. tell me now what thou haft done; hide it not from me.

20 And Achar answered Joshua, and faid, Indeed I have finned against the LORD God of Ifrael, and thus and thus have I done: 21 When I faw among the fpoils a goodly Babylonith garment, and two hundred thekels of filver, and a wedge of gold of fitty fhekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midtt of my tent, and the filver under it. 22 So Jothua fent mellengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behoid, it was hid in his tent, and the filver under it.

23 And they took them out of the midft of the tent, and brought them unto Jothua, and unto all the children of Irael, and laid them out before the LORD.

24 And Jothua, and all Ifrael with him, took Achan the ton of Zerah, and the filver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his fons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his affes, and his theep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

25 And Jothua faid, Why haft thou troubled us: the LORD thall trouble thee this day. And all Ifrael toned him with ftones, and burned them with fire, after they had floned them with ftones.

26 And they raised over him a great heap of ftones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fiercenefs of his anger: wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor unto this day.

God encourageth Joshua. 3 The fratagem whereby Ai was taken. 30 fokua buildetb an altar, 32 writeth the lacy on flones, 33 propoundeth blefings and curings.

AND the LORD faid unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou difmayed; take all the people of war with thee, and arife, go up to Ai, tee I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.

2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king, as thou didit unto Jericho and her king: only the fpoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, thall ye take for a prey unto yourfelves. Lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

3 So Joshua arofe, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Jofhua chofe out thirty thoufand mighty men of valour, and fent them away by night.

4 And he commanded them, faying, Be. hold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city; go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

5 And 1, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pafs, when they come out against us as at the firit, that we will flee before them,

6 (For they will come out after us,) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will fay, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.

Then ye thall rise up from the ambush, and feize upon the city. for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

8 And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall fet the city on fire: accord ing to the comniandment of the LORD thall we do. See, I have commanded you.

Joshua therefore fent them forth;

His fratagem against Ai. and they went to lie in ambuth, and abode be. tween Beth-el and A1, on the weft fide of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the peopie.

10 And Jofhua rofe up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Ifrael, before the people to Ai.

11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north fide of Ai: now there was a val. ley between them and Ai.

12 And he took about five thousand men, an fet them to lie in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, on the weft fide of the city.

13 And when they had fet the people, even all the hoft that was on the north of the city,

and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midft of the valley.

14 And it came to pafs, when the king of Ai faw it, that they hafted and rofe up early, and the men of the city went out againft Ifraei to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wift not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

15 And Joihua and all Ifrael made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to purfue after them: and they purfued after Jothua, and were drawn away from the city.

17 And there was not a man left in Ai, or Beth-el, that went not out after Ifrael: and they left the city open, and purfued after Ifrael.

18 And the LORD faid unto Joshua, Stretch

out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai: for I will give it into thine hand. And Jo thua ftretched out the fpear that be bad in his hand toward the city.

19 And the ambush arofe quickly out of their place, and they ran as foon as he had ftretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hafted, and fet the city on fire.

20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they faw, and behold, the smoke ofthe city afcended up to heaven; and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that led to the wilderness turned back upon the purfuers.

21 And when Joshua and all Ifrael faw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the fmoke of the city afcended, then they turned again, and flew the men of Ai.

22 And the other iffued out of the city against them; fo they were in the midft of Ifrael, fome on this fide, and fome on that fide and they fmote them, fo that they let none of them remain or escape.

23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

24 And it came to pafs, when Ifrael had made an end of tlaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chafed them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the fword until they were confumed, that all the Ifraelites returned unto Ai, and fmote it with the edge of the fword.

25 And so it was, that all that fell that day,

26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the fpear, until he had utterly deftroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

27 Only the cattle, and the fpoil of that city, Ifrael took for a prey unto themfelves, according unto the word of the LORD, which he commanded Tofhua.

28 And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an Heap forever, even a defolation unto this day. 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until even tide: and as foon as the fun was down, Johur commanded that they thould take his carcafs down from the tree, and caft it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raife thereon a great heap of ftones, that remaineth unto this day.

30 Then Tothua built an altar unto the LORD God of Ifrael in mount Ebal;

31 As Mofes the fervant of the LORD commanded the children of Ifrael, as it is written in the book of the law of Mofes, An altar of whole ftones, over which no man hath lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burntonerings unto the LORD, and facrificed peace offerings.

32 And he wrote there upon the fones a copy of the law of Moles, which he wrote in the prefence of the children of Ifrael.

33 And all Ifrael, and their elders, and of ficers, and their judges, flood on this fide the ark, anion that fide, before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the ftranger as he that was born among them; half of them over againft mount Gerizim, and half of them over againft mount Ebal; as Mofes the fervant of the LORD had conman ted before, that they thould blefs the people of Ifrael,

34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the bleifings and curfings, according to all that is written in the book of the law. 35 There was not a word of all that Mofes commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Ifrael, with the we men, and the little ones, and the ftrangers that were converfant among them.

7 And the men of Ifrael faid unto the Hi viles, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how thall we make a league with you? 8 And they faid unto Joshua, We are thy fervants. And Joshua faid unto them, Who are ye? ani trom whence come ye!

9 And they faid unto him, From a very far country thy fervants are come, because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the tame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

To And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Hefhbon, and to Óg king of Bathan, which was at Afhtaroth.

II Wherefore our elders, and all the inhabitants of our country, fpake to us, faying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and fay unto them, We are your fervants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

12 This our bread we took hot for our pro. vifion out of our houfes on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

13 And these bottles of wine which we filled, were new; and behold they be rent, and thefe our garments and our thoes are be come old by reafon of the very long jour ney.

14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them to let them live: and the princes of the congregation fware un to them.

16 And it came to pafs at the end of three days, after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neigh hours, and that they dwelt among them.

17 And the children of Ifrael journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephi rah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.

18 And the children of Ifrael fmote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Ifrael. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

19 But all the princes faid unto all the congregation, We have fworn unto them by the not touch them.

3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambaffadors; and took old facks upon their affes, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5 And old fhoes and cloured upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provifion was dry and mouldy. 6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and faid unto him, and to the men

23 Now, therefore, ye are curfed; and there fhall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 And they answered Joshua, and faid, Because it was certainly told thy fervants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his fervant Mofes to give you all the land, and

TOW it came to pafs, when Adoni-zedec king of Jerufalem had heard how Jofhua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, fo he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Ifrael, and were among them;

2 That they feared greatly, becaufe Gibe on was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

3 Wherefore Adoni-zedec king of Jerufa. lem fent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachith, and unto Debir king of Eglon, faying,

4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may fmite Gibeon; for it hath ma te peace with Joshua, and with the children of Ifrael.

5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerufalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachith, the king of Eglon, gathered themfelves together, and went up, they and all their hofts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

6 And the men of Gibeon fent unto Jofhua to the camp to Gilgal, faying, Slack not thy hand from thy fervants; come up to us quickly, and fave us, and help us for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

7 So Joshua afcended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

8 And the LORD faid unto Jofhua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand: there fhall not a man of them ftand before thee.

9 Joshua therefore came unto them fudden ly, and went up from Gilgal all night.

To And the LORD difcomiited them before Ifrael, and flew them with a great flaughter at Gibeon, and chafed them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon, and fmote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

II And it came to pafs, as they fled from before Ifrael, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD caft down great ftones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hail-ftones than they whom the children of Ifrael flew with the fword.

14 And there was no day like that before it, or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Ifrael.

15 And Jofhua returned, and all Ifrael with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

16 But thefe five kings fled, and hid themfelves in a cave at Makkedah.

17 And it was told Jothua, faying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

18 And Jothua faid, Roll great ftones upon the mouth of the cave, and fet men by it tor to keep them;

19 And flay ye not, but purfue after your enemies, and fmite the hindmoft of them; furter them not to enter into their cities; for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.

20 and it came to pafs, when Joshua and the children of Ifrael ha i made an end of flay. ing them with a very great flaughter, till they were confumed, that the rett sobich remained of them entered into fenced cines.

21 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Ifrael.

22 Then faid Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out thofe five kings unto me out of the cave.

23 And they did fo, and brought forth thofe five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerufalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachith, and the king of Eglon.

24 And it came to pafs, when they brought out thofe kings unto fothua, that Joshua called for all the men of Ifrael, and faid unto the "captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of thefe kings. And they came near, an.1 put their teet upon the necks of them.

25 And Joshua faid unto them, Fear not, nor be difmayel, be strong, and of good courage: for thus fhall the LORD do to all your enemies againft whom ye fight.

26 And afterward Joshua fmote them, and flew them, and hanged them on five trees : and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

27 And it came to pafs, at the time of the going down of the fun, that Joshua com. manied, and they took them down off the trees, and catt them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great ftones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.

28 And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and fmote it with the edge of the fword, and the king thereof he utterly deftroyed, them, and all the touls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Je richo.

29 Then Joshua paffed from Makkedaḥ,

Chap. xi. and all Ifrael with him, unto Libnah, and fought againft Libnah:

30 And the LORD delivered it alfo, and the king thereof, into the hand of Ifrael; and he fmote it with the edge of the fword, and all the fouls that were therein: he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho. 31 And Joshua paffed from Libnah, and all Ifrael with him, unto Lachifl, and encamped against it, and fought against it.

32 And the LORD delivered Lachith into the hand of Ifrael, which took it on the fecond day, and fmote it with the edge of the fword, and all the fouls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Labnah. 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help achish; and Joshua fmote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

34 And from Lachith Joshua paffed unto Eglon, and all Ifrael with him, and they encamped against it, and fought against it:

35 And they took it on that day, and fmute It with the edge of the fword; and all the fouls that were therein he utterly deftroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachifh.

36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Ifriel with him, unto Hebron, and they fought against it:

37 And they took it, and fmote it with the edge of the fword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the fouls that were therein: he left none remaining, (according to all that he had done to Eglon,) but deftroyed it utterly, and all the fouls that

were therein.

38 And Jofhua returned, and all Ifrael with him, to Debir; and fought against it:

39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and they fmote their with the edge of the fword, and utterly deftroyed all the fouls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, fo he did to Debir, and to the king thereof, as he had done alfo to Libnah, and to her king.

40 So Jothan fmote all the country of the hills, and of the fouth, and of the vale, and of the fprings, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly deftroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Ifrael commanded.

41 And Joshua fmote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Gothen even unto Gibeon.

42 And all thefe kings, and their land, did Joshua take at one time; because the LORD God of Ifrael fought for Ifrael.

43 And Jofhun returned, and all Ifrcel with him, unto the camp to Gilgai.

4 And they went out, they and all their hots with them, much people, even as the fand that is upon the fea-thore in multitude, with horfes and chariots very many.

5 And when all thefe kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight againft Ifrael.

6And the LORD faid unto Jofhua, Be not afraid because of them; for to-morrow about this time will I deliver them up all flain before Ifrael: thou fhalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

7 So Jofhua came, and all the people of war with him, againft them by the waters of Merom fuddenly, and they fell upon them.

8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Ifrael, who fmote them, and chafed them unto great Zidon, and unto Mizrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh caftward; and they fmote them, until they left them none remaining.

9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him he houghed their horfes, and burnt their chariots with fire.

10 And Joshua at that time turned back and took Hazor, and fmote the king thereof with the fword: for Hazor before-time was the head of all thofe kingdoms.

11 And they fmote all the fouls that were therein with the edge of the fword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe; and he burnt Hazor with fire.

12 And all the cities of thofe kings, and all the kings of them, did Jofhua take, and fmote them with the edge of the fword, and he utterly deftroyed them, as Mofes the fervant of the LORD commanded.

13 But as for the cities that food till in their ftrength, Ifrael burned none of them, fave Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.

15 As the LORD commanded Mofes his fervant, fo did Mofes command Joshua, and fo did Joshua: he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Mofes.

16 So Jehua took all that land, the hills, and all the fouth country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Ifrael, and the valley of the fame;

17 Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad, in the valley of Lebanon, under mount Hermon and all their kings he took, and fmote them, and flew them.
