The Levite and bis concubine, Chap. xx. her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his fervant with him, and a couple of affes: and the brought him into her father's houfe; and, when the father of the damfel faw him, he rejoiced to meet him. 4 And his father-in-law, the damfel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days; fo they did eat and drink, and lodged there. 5 And it came to pafs on the fourth day, when they arofe early in the morning, that he rofe up to depart: and the damiel's father faid unto his fon-in-law, Comfort thine heart with a morfel of bread, and afterward go your way. 6 And they fat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damfel's father had fain unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry. 7 And when the man rofe up to depart, his father-in-law urged him; therefore he lodged there again. 8 And he arofe early in the morning on the fifth day to depart and the damfel's father faid, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them. 9 And when the man rofe up to depart, he and his concubine, and his fervant, his father-in-law, the damfel's father, faid unto him, Behold now, the day draweth towards evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to-morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayeft go home. 10 But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over againft Jebus, (which is Jerufalem,) and there were with him two affes faddled; his concu bine alfo was with him 11 dnd when they were by Jebus, the day was far fpent; and the fervant faid unto his matter, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in unto this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it. 12 And his mafter faid unto him, We will not turn afide hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Ifrael; we will pafs over to Gibeah. 13 And he faid unto his fervant, Come, and let us draw near to one of thefe places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah. 14 And they paffed on, and went their way, and the fun went down upon them then they were by Gibeah which belongeth to Benjamin. 15 And they turned afide thither, t go in and to lodge in Gibeah; and, when he went in, he fat him down in a fireet of the city, for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging. 16 And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was alfo of mount Ephraim; and he fojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites. 17 And when he had lifted up his eyes, he faw a way-faring man in the street of the city: and the old man faid, Whither goeft thou? and whence comeft thou! 18 And he faid unto him, We are paffing from Beth-lehem-judak toward the fide of mount Ephraim; from thence am 1; and I The Benjamites wickednefs. went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am notu going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house. 19 Yet there is both ftraw and provender for our affes; and there is bread and wine alfo for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy fervants: there is no want of any thing. 20 And the old man faid, Peace be with thee: howfoever, let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the treet. 21 So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the affes: and they wathed their feet, and did eat and drink. 22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain fons of Belial, befet the house round about, and beat at the door, and fpake to the matter of the house, the old man, laying, Bring forth the man that came into thine houfe, that we may know him. 23 And the man, the matter of the house, went out unto them, and faid unto them, Nay, my brethenr, nay, I pray you, do not fo wickedly; feeing that this man is come into mine houfe, do not this folly. 24 Behold, here is my daughter, a maiden, and his concubine, them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what feemeth good unto you: but unte this man do not fo vile a thing. 25 But the men would not hearken to him: fo the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abufed her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to fpring they let her go. 26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's houfe where her iord was, till it was light. 27 And her lord rofe up in the morning, and opened the doors of the houfe, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold. 28 And he faid unto her, Up, and let us be going: but none anfwered. Then the mas took her up upon an afs, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place. 29 And when he was come into his house he took a knife, and laid hold on his concu bine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and fent her into all the coafts of Ifrael. 30 And it was fo, that all that faw it fail, There was no fuch deed done nor feen from the day that the children of Ifrael came up ou of the land of Egypt unto this day: confider of it, take advice, and fpeak your minds. CHAP. XX. 1 The Levite, in a general afembly, declareth bis wrong: 8 their decree 26 The Beniamites are defroyed. HFN all the chil tren of Ifrael went out, together as one man, from Dan even to Beerincba, with the land of Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpch. 2 And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Irael, prefented themselves in the affembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew fword. The Levite's complaint. JUDGES. The Ifraelites war with Benjamik. 3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Ifrael were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then faid the children of Ifrael, Tell us, how was this wickedness? 4 And the Levite, the hufband of the woman that was flain, anfwered, and faid, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge 5 And the men of Gibeah rofe against me, and befet the houfe round about upon me by night, and thought to have flain me; and my concubine have they forced, that flie is dead. 6 And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and fent her throughout all the coun try of the inheritance of Ifrael: for they have committed lewdnefs and folly in Ifrael. 7 Behold, ye are all the children of Ifrael; give here your advice and counfel. 8 And all the people arofe as one man, faying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house; 9 But now, this all be the thing which we will do to Gibeah, we will go up by lot againt it: 10 And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Ifrael, and an hundred of a thoufand, and a thoufand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the peo ple, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Ifrael. 11 So all the men of Ifrael were gathered against the city, knit together as one man. 12And the tribes of Ifrael fent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, faying, What wickedness is this that is done among you? 13 Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Ifrael. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Ifrael: 14 But the children of Benjamin gathered themfelves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Ifrael. 15 And the children of Benjamin were num. bered at that time out of the cities, twenty and fix thousand men that drew fword, befide the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered feven hundred chofen men. 16 Among all this people there were feven hundred chofen men left-handed: every one could fling ftones at an hair-breadth, and not mifs. 17 And the men of Ifrael, befide Benjamis, were numbered four hundred thoufaad men that drew fword; all these were men of war. 18 And the children of Ifrael arofe, and went up to the house of God, and asked counfel of God, and aid, Which of us fhall go up frit to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD faid, Judah ball & up first. 19 And the children of Ifrael rofe up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah. 20 And the men of Ifrael went ou, to battle againit Benjamin, and the men of Ifrael put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibean. 21 And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to e groand of the Ifraelites that day twenty two thoufand men. 22 And the people the men of Ifrael en couraged themfel ves, and fet their battle again in array, in the place where they put them felves in array the first day. 23 (And the children of Ifrael went up, and wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, faying, Shall 1 go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother! And the LORD faid, Go up againff him.) 24 And the children of Ifrael came near against the children of Benjamin the second day. 25 And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the fecond day, and deftroyed down to the ground of the children of Ifrael again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the fword. 26 Then all the children of Ifrael and all the people went up, and came unto the houfe of God and wept, and fat there before the LORD, and fafted that day until even, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings be fore the LORD. 27 And the children of Ifrael enquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days; 28 And Phinchas, the fon of Eleazar, the fon of Aaron, ftood before it in those days,) fay ing, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or fhall I ceafe? And the LORD faid, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand. 29 And Ifrael fet liers in wait round about Gibeah. 30 And the children of Ifrael went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put thenifelves in array against Gibeah, as at other times. 31 And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to fmite of the peo ple, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the houfe of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field,. about thirty men of Ifrael. 32 And the children of Benjamin faid, They are Imitten down before us as at the firft. But the children of Ifrael faid, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the high-ways. 33 And all the men of Ifrael rofe up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baal-tamar; and the liers in wait of Ifrael came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah. 34 And there came againft Gibeah ten thousand chofen men out of all Ifrael, and the battle was fore: but they knew not that evil was near them. 35 And the LORD fmote Benjamin before Ifrael: and the children of Ifrael deftroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thoufand and an hundred men: all there drew the sword. 36 So the children of Benjamin faw that they were fmitten: for the men of Ifrael gave place to the Benjamites, because they frufted unto the liers in wait which they had fet befide Gibeah. 37 And the liers in wait hafted, and ruthed upon Gibeah: an ! the liers in wait drew them felves along, and fmote all the city with the edge of the fword. 38 Now there was an appointed fign be The Benjamites defolation. Chap. xxi. tween the men of Ifrael and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with fmoke to rife up out of the city. 39 And when the men of Ifrael retired in the battle, Benjamin began to fmite and kill of the men of Ifrael about thirty perfons; for they faid, Surely they are fmitten down before us, as in the first battle. 40 But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of fmoke, the Benja mites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city afcended up to heaven. 41 And when the men of Ifrael turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they faw that evil was come upon them. 42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Ifrael unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them: and them which came out of the cities they deftroyed in the midft of them. 43 bus they inclofed the Benjamites round about, and chafed them, and trode them down with ease, over againft Gibeah toward the fun-rifing. 44 And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men: all these were men of valour. 45 And they turned, and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the high-ways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them ato Gidom, and flew two thousand men of them. 46 So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the fword: all thefe were men of valour. 47 But fix hundred men turned, and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months. 48 And the men of Ifrael turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and fmote them with the edge of the fword, as well the men of every city as the beafts, and all that came to hand: alfo they fet on fire all the cities that they came to. CHAP. XXI. The people bewailing the defolation of Benjamin, 16 aave them to surprise the vir gins that dancea at Shiloh. the men of Ifrael had fworn in Mizpeh, laying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife. 2 And the people came to the houfe of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept fore; 3 And faid, O LORD God of Ifrael, why is this come to pass in Ifrael, that there fhould be-to-day one tribe lacking in Ifrael! 4 And it came to pafs on the morrow, that the people rofe early, and built there an altar, and offere burnt-offerings and peace-otterings. And the children of Ifrae! faid, Who is there among all the tribes of Ifrael that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD! For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Miz peh, faying. He fhall furely be put to death. 6 And the children of Ifrael repented them for Benjamin their brother, ani faid, There is one tribe cut ort from Ifrael this day: 7 How thali we do for wives for them that remain, feena; we have fworn by the LORD, that we will not give them of our daughters to wives? And they fail, What one is there of the tribes of Ifrael that came not up to Miz. Their deftruction bewailed. peh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabeth-gilead to the afembly. 9 For the people were numbered, and, be hold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabeth-gilead there. 10 And the congregation fent thither twelve thousand men of the valianteft, and commanded them, faying, Go and fmite the inhabitants of Jabeth-gilead with the edge of the fword, with the women and the children. 11 And this is the thing that ye thall do, Ye shall utterly deftroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man. 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabeth-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male; and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. 13 And the whole congregation fent fome to fpeak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them. 14 And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had faved alive of the women of Jabeth-gilead: and yet so they furficed them nɔt. 15 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Ifrael. 16 Then the elders of the congregation faid, How thall we do for wives for them that remain, feeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? 17 And they said, There must be an inheri tance for them that be efcaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not deftroyed out of Ifrael. 18 Howbeit, we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Ifrael have fworn, faying, Curfed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin. 19 Then they faid, Behold, there is a feaft of the LORD in Shiloh yearly, in a place which is on the north fide of Beth-el, on the eaft fide of the high-way that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, ani on the fouth of Lebonah. 20 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, faying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards; 21 And fee, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 And it fhall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will fay unto them, Be favourable unto them for our fakes; becaufe we referved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye fhould be guilty. 23 And the children of Benjamin did fo, and took them wives according to their num ber, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them. 24 And the children of Ifrael departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe, and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance. 25 In thofe days there was no king in Ifm rael: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. The ¶ The Book of RUTH. CHAP. I. Now it came to pars in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land: and a certain man of Beth-lehem-judah went to fojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife, and his two fons. 2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two fons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lekem-ju tah and they came into the country of Moab, and continued there. 3 And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and the was left, and her two fons. 4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth and they dwelled there about ten years. S And Mahlon and Chilion died alfo both of them; and the woman was left of her two fons and her husband. 6 Then the profe with her daughters-inlaw, that the might return from the country of Moab for the had heard in the country of Moab, how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread. 7 Wherefore he went forth out of the place where the was, and her two daughtersin-law with her: and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah. 8 And Naomi faid unto her two daughtersin-law, Go, return each to her mother's houfe: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. 9 The LORD grant you that ye may find reft, each of you in the house of her husband. Then the kiffed them: and they lifted up their voice, and wept. To And they faid unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people. 11 And Naomi faid,Turs again, my daughters; why will ye go with me! are there yet any more fous in my womb, that they may be your husbands? 12 Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an hutband. If I fhould fay, I have hope, if I should have an hutband alfo to-night, and fhould alfo bear fons; 13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown Would ye stay for them from having hutbands? Nay, my daughters: for it grieveth me much for your fakes, that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me. 14 And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah killed her mother-in-law; but Ruth clave unto her. 15 And the faid, Behold, thy fifter-in-law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods return thou after thy fifter-in-law. 16 And Ruth faid, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goeft, I will go; and where thou lodgeft, I will lodge: thy people ball be my people, and thy God my God, Where thou dieit will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do fo to me, and more alío, if aught but death part thee and me. 18 When the faw that he was fedfaftly minded to go with her, then the left fpeaking unto her. 19 So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pafs, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was moved about them; and they faid, Is this Naomi ? 20 And the faid unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. 21 I went out full, and the LORD ha brought me home again empty: Why then call ye me Naomi, feeing the LORD hath teftified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me? 22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moab. itefs, her daughter-in-law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley-harveft. CHAP. II. 1 Ruth gleaneth in the fields of Boaz: 8 be fbeweth her favour. AND Naomi had a kinfman of her huf. band's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabitefs faid unto Na. omi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whofe fight I shall find grace. And the faid unto her, Go, my daughter. 3 And the went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech. 4 And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and laid unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD blefs thee. 5 Then faid Boaz unto his fervant that was fet over the reapers, Whofe damfel is this? 6 And the fervant that was fet over the reapers answered, and faid, It is the Moab itish damfel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab; 7 And the faid, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the theaves: fo the came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that the tarried a little in the house. 8 Then faid Boaz unto Ruth, Heareft thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here faft by my maidens. 9 Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? And when thou art athirit, go un to the veffels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn. 10 Then he fell on her face, and bowed herfelf to the ground, and faid unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou thou left take knowledge of me, feeing I am a stranger? 11 And Boaz anfwered and faid unto her, It hath fully been fhewe! me all that thou haft done unto thy mother-in-law fince the death of thine hutband; and hew thou haft left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people Naomi's inftructions. Ruth lieth at Roax's feet. 5 And the faid unto her, All that thou fay eft unto me 1 will do. Chap. iil, iv. people which thou knewe not heretofore. 12 The LORD recompenfe thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Ifrael, under whofe wings thou art come to truft. 13 Then the faid, Let me find favour in thy fight, my lord; for that thou haft comforted me, and for that thou haft spoken friendly un to thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens. 14 And Boaz faid unto her, At meal-time come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morfel in the vinegar. And the fat befide the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was fuiticed, and lert. 15 And when he was rifen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, faying, Let her glean even among the theaves, and reproach her not: 16 And let fall alfo fome of the handfuls of purpofe for her, and leave them, that the may glean them, and rebuke her not. 17 So the gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that the had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley. 18 And the took it up, and went into the city; and her mother-in-law faw what the had gleaned: and the brought forth, and gave to her that the had referved after the was fuf ficed. 19 And her mother-in-law faid unto her, Where haft thou gleaned to-day! and where wroughteft thou? Bleffed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And the fhewed her mother-in-law with whom the had wrought, and faid, The man's name with whom. i wrought to-day is Boaz. 20 And Naomi faid unto her daughter-inlaw, Bleffed be he of the LORD, who hath not left of his kindnefs to the living and to the dead. And Naomi faid unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kin men. 21 And Ruth the Moabitefs faid, He faid unto me alfo, Thou halt keep faft by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest. 22 And Naomi faid unto Ruth her daugh. ter-in-law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field. 23 So the kept faft by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley-harveft and of wheat-harveft; and dwelt ve.th her mother-in law. CHA P. III. By Naomi's infiructions, 6 Ruth lieth at Boar's feet. 8 Boaz acknowledgeth the right of a kinsman. THEN Naomi her mother-in-law faid unto her, My daughter, shall I not feek reft for thee, that it may be well with thee? 2 And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whofe maidens thou waft? Behold, he winDoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor. 3 Wath thyfelf therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyfelf known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking. 4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he thatĺ be, and thou that go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down, and he will tell thee what thou shalt do. 6 And the went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother-in law bade her, 7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to be down at the end of the heap of corn: and the came foftly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down. 8 And it came to pafs at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his fect. 9 And he faid, Who art thou? And the anfwered, I am Ruth thine handmaid; fpread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinfman. 10 And he faid, Bleffed be thou of the LORD, my daughter; for thou haft fhewed more kind. nefs in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedft not young men, whether poor or rich. 11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requireft: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman. 12 And now it is true that I am thy near kinfman: howbeit, there is a kinfman nearer than 1. 13 Tarry this night, and it thall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinfman, well; let him do the kinfman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinfman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinfman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning. 14 And the lay at his feet until the morning and the role up before one could know another. And he faid, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor. 15 Alfo he faid, Bring the veil that thou ha upon thee, and hold it. And when the held it, ne measured fix meafures of barley, and laid it on her: and the went into the city. 16 And when the came to her mother-inlaw, the faid, Who art thou, my daughter! And the told her all that the man had done to her. 17 And the faid, Thefe fix measures of bar ley gave he me; for he faid to me, Go not empty unto thy mother-in-law. 18 Then faid the, Sit ftill, my daughter, un til thou know how the marter will fall for the man will not be in reft, until he have finished the thing this day. CHAP. IV. 1 Boaz calleth into judgment the next kinf. man: 6 he refujing, 15 Boaz marrieth Ruth.
