Saul feeketh his father's alles.

peh, and pursued the Philiftines, and fmote confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be then, until they cams under Beth-car.

12 Then Samuel took a ftone, and fet it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Fben-ezer, faying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped as.

13 So the Philiftines were fubdued, and they came no more into the coast of Ifrael, and the hand of the LORD was againft the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

14 And the cities which the Philiftines kad taken from Ifrael were restored to Ifrael, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coafts thereof did Ifrael deliver out of the hands of the Philiftines. And there was peace between Ifrael and the Amorites.

15 And Samuel judged Ifrael all the days of his lice.

16 And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth-el, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Ifrael in all thofe places.

17 And his return was to Ramah; for there was his houfe: and there he judged Ifrael; and there he built an altar unto the LORD. CHAP. VIII.

By the necafion of the ill government of Samuel's fans the Ifraelites afk a king. 10 The manner of their king.

AND it came to pafs, when Samuel was old, that he made his fons judges over Ifrael.

2 Now the name of his firft-born was Joel, and the name of his fecond Abiah: they were judges in Beer-fheba.

3 And his fons walked not in his ways,

but turned afide after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

4 Then all the elders of Ifrael gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

5 And faid unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy fons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the

nations.

6 But the thing difpleafed Samuel, when they faid, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

And the Loa faid unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they fay unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

According to all the works which they have done, fince the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forfaken me, and ferved other gods; fo do they alfo unto thee.

9 Now therefore, hearken unto their voice: howbeit, yet proteft folemnly unto them, and thew them the manner of the king that fhall reign over them.

10 And Samuel told all the wor 's of the LORD unto the people that asked o, him a king.

11 And he faid, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you; He will take your fons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horfemen; and fome fhall run before his chariots.

12 And he will appoint him captains over thonfands, and captains over fifties, and will fet them to ear his ground, and to reap his harveft, and to make his inftruments of war, and inftruments of his chariots.

13 And he will take your daughters to be

bakers.

14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive-yards, even the best of them, and give them to his fervants.

15 And he will take the tenth of your feed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his fervants.

16 And he will take your men-fervants, and your maid-fervants, and your goodlieff young men, and your affes, and put them to his work.

17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his fervants.

18 And ye shall cry out in that day, because of your king which ye shall have chofen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

19 Nevertheless, the people retufed to obey the voice of Samuel, and they faid, Nay, but we will have a king over us,

20 That we alfo may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearfed them in the ears of the LORD.

22 And the LORD faid to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king.

And Samuel faid unto the men of Ifrael, Go je every man unto his city.

CHAP. IX.

1 Saul defpairing to find his father's afes, is according to Goa's revelation, 18 cometh to Samuel. 19 Samuel entertaineth Saul.

N

OW there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the fon of Zeror, the fon of Bechorath, the fon of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.

2 And he had a fon whofe name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly, and there was not among the children of ifrael a goodlier perfon than he: from his thoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. And the affes of Kish, Saul's father, were lon; and Kith faid to Saul his fon, Take now one of the fervants with thee, and arife, go feck the affes.

4 And he paffed through mount Ephraim, and paffed through the land of Shaliha, but they found them not; then they paffed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not; and he paffed through the land of the Benja mites, but they found them not.

5 And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul faid to his fervant that was with him, Come, and let us return; left my father leave caring for the affes, and take thought for us.

6 And he faid unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an ho nourable man; all that he faith cometh furely to pafs: now, let us go thither: peradventure he can fhew us our way that we should go.

7 Then faid Saul to his fervant, But behold, if we go, what fhall we bring the man? For the bread is fpent in our veffels, and there is not a prefent to bring to the man of God: what have we?

8 And the fervant answered Saul again, and faid, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part o, a thekel of filver; that will I give to the man of God to tell us our way.

9(Before-time in Ifrael, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let

us go to the feer: for he that is now called a Prophet, was betore-time called a Seer.)

10 Then faid Saul to his fervant, Well faid; come, let us go: fo they went unto the eity where the man of God was.

And as they went up the hill to the eity, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and faid unto them, Is the feer here?

12 And they answered them, and faid, He is; behold, he is betore you: make hafte now, for he came to-day to the city; tor there is a facrifice of the people to-day in the high place.

13 As foon as ye be come into the city ye hall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat : for the people will not set until he come, because he doth blefs the facrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore, get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.

14 And they went up into the city; and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.

15 Now the LORD had told Samuel in his car a day before Saul came, faying,

16 To-morrow about this time I will fend thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Ifrael, that he may fave my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.

17 And when Samuel faw Saul, the LORD faid unto him, Behold the man whom I fpake to thee of: this fame thall reign over my people.

18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and faid, Tell me, I pray thee, where the feer's house is.

19 And Samuel anfwered Saul, and faid, 1 am the feer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to-day; and to-morrow I will let thee go, and will

tell thee all that is in thine heart.

20 And as for thine affes that were loft

three days ago, fet not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the defire of Ifrael? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house?

21 And Saul antwered and faid, Am not I a Benjamite, of the fmalleft of the tribes of Ifrael? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe or Benjamin? Wherefore then ipcakeit thou fo to me?

22 And Samuel took Saul and his fervant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them fit in the chiefert place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty perfons.

23 And Samuel faid unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I faid unto thee, Set it by thee.

24 And the cook took up the thoulder, and that which was upon it, and fet it before Saul. And Samuel faid, Behold that which is lett! fet it before thee, and cat; for unto this time hath it been kept for thee, fince I faid, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.

25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuei communed with Saul upon the top of the house.

a6 And they rofe early; and it came to

and anointeth Saul. pafs about the fpring of the day, that Sainuel called Saul to the top of the houfe, faying Jp, that I may tend thee away. And Saul arofe, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

27 And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel faid to Saul, Bid the fervant pafs on before us, (and he passed on,) but ftand thou ftill a while, that I may fhew thee the word of God. X.

CHAP.

1 Samuelansinteth Saul: 2 be confirmeth him by prediction of three figns. 9 Saul's heart is changed, and he prophefieth

Hapon his head, and kissed him, and HEN Samuel took a vial of oil, and pourfaid, Is it not becaufe the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

2 When thou art departed from me to. day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's fepulchre, in the border of Benjamin, at Zelzah; and they will fay unto thee, The affes which thou wenteft to feek are found and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the affes, and forroweth for you, faying, What thall I do for my fon?

3 Then fhalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there fhall meet thee three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

4 And they will falute thee, and give thee two inaves of bread, which thou shalt receive of their hands.

5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Phili tines: and it hall come to pafs, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou thalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place, with a pfaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

6 And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophefy with them,

and fhalt be turned into another man.

7 And let it be, when thefe figns are come unto thee, that thou do as occafion thall ferve thee; for God is with thee.

8 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt-offerings, and to facri fice facrifices of peace-offerings: feven days halt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and fhew thee what thou shalt do.

9And it was fo, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all thofe figns came to pafs that day.

10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spiri of God came upon him, and he pro. phefied among them.

11 And it came to pafs, when all that knew him before-time faw that, behold, he prophefied among the prophets, then the people faid one to another, What is this that is come unto the fon of Kith? Is Saul also among the prophets?

12 And one of the fame place answered, and faid, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul alfo among the prophets?

13 And when he had made an end of pro phelying, he came to the high place.

Saul is chofen king.

Chap xi, xil.

14¶ And Saul's uncle faid unto him and to his fervant, Whitber went ye? And he said, To feek the affes: and when we faw that they were no where, we came to Sainuel.

15 And Saul's uncle faid, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel faid unto you.

16 And Saul fai unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the ailes were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel fpake, he told him not.

17 And Samue! called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;

18 And faid unto the children of Ifrael, Thus faith the LORD God of Ifrael, I brought up Ifrael out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppreffed you:

19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself faved you out of all your adverfities and your tribulations; and ye have faid unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therciore, present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands,

20 Aad when Samuel had cauled all the tribes of Krael to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

21 When he had caufed the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Mairi was taken, and Saul the fon of Kith was taken: and when they fought him he could not be found.

22 Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, it the man thould yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid bimfelt among the fluff.

23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he food among the people, he was higher than any of the people, from his fhoul. ders and upward.

24 And Samuel faid to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chofen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people thouted, and faid, God fave the king.

25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel feat all the people away, every man to his houfe. 26And Saul alfo went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whofe hearts God had touched.

27 But the children of Belial faid, How fhall this man fave us? And they defpifed him, and brought him no prefents: but he hell his peace.

CHAP. XI.

1 Nabafo offereth them of Jahefb-gilead a reproachful condition: 4 they fend to Saul, and are delivered, 12 Saul confirmed king.

THEN Mahath the Ammonite came up, and encamped again Jabeth-gilead; and all

the men of Jabeth said unto Nahath, Make a covenant with us, and we will ferve thee.

2 And Nahath the Ammonite anfwered them, on this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thruft out all your tight eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Ifrael.

3 And the elders of Jabeth faid unto him, Give us seven days' refpite, that we may fend meffengers unto all the coats of Ifrael: and then, in there he no man to fave us, we will

5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul faid, What aileth the people that they weep' And they told him the tidings of the men o Jabeth.

6 And the spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard thofe tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and fent them throughout all the coafts of Ifrael by the hands of mef fengers, faying, Whofoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, fo thall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LOD fell on the people, and they came out with one

confent.

8 And when he numbered them in Be zck, the children of Ifrael were three hun dred thousand, and the men of Judan shirty thousand.

9 And they faid unto the meffengers that came, Thus thall ye fay unto the men of Jabeth-gilead, To-morrow, by that time the fun be hot, ye shall have help. And the nieifengers came and thewed it to the men of Jabeth; and they were glad.

10 Therefore the men of Jabesh fa: 1, To. morrow we will come out unto you, and ye fhall do with us all that feemeth good unto you.

II And it was fo on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies, and they came into the midst of the hot in the morning watch, and flew the Ammon. ites until the heat of the day: and it came to pafs, that they which remained were fcattered, fo that two of them were not left together.

12 And the people faid unto Samuel, Who is he that faid, shall Saul reign over us! Bring the men, that we may put them to death.

13 Aad Saul faid, There fhall not a man be put to death this day for to-day the LORD hath wrought falvation in Ifrael,

14 Then faid Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the king. dom there.

15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they facrificed facri fices of peace-offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Ifrael rejoiced greatly.

CHA P. XII.

1 Samuel teftifieth his integrity: 6 be reprov eth the people of ingratitude: 16 be terri fieth them with thunder in harvest time, 20 and comforteth them in God's mercy.

AND Samuel faid unto all Ifrael, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye faid unto me, and have made a king over you.

2 And now, behold, the king walketh be fore you: and I am old and gray-headed; and, behold, my fons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.

5 And he faid unto them, The LORD is witnefs against you, and his anointed is witnefs this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand. And they answered, He is witnefs. 6And Samuel faid unto the people, it is the LORD that advanced Mofes and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.

7 Now therefore, ftand ftill, that I may reafon with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.

9 And when they forgat the LORD their God, he fold them into the hand of Sifera, captain of the hoft of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philiftines, and into the hand of the king of Moab; and they fought againft them.

19 And all the people faid unto Samuel, Pray for thy fervants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our fins this evil, to ask us a king.

zo And Samuel faid unto the people, Fear

4 And all Ifrael heard fay that Saul had fmitten a garrison of the Philiftines, and that Ifrael alfo was had in abomination with the Philiftines. And the people were called to. gether after Saul to Gilgal.

5And the Philiftines gathered themselves together to fight with Ifrael, thirty thousand chariots, and fix thousand horiemen, and people as the fand which is on the fea-fhore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmath, eastward from Beth-aven.

6 When the men or Ifrael faw that they were in a trait, (for the people were diftreffed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

7 And fome of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead: as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

8 And he tairied feven days, according to the fet time that Samuel bad appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the peo plc were fcattered from him.

y And Saul faid, Bring hither a burnt-offer. ing to me, and peace-offerings. And he offer. ed the burnt-onering.

10 And it came to pafs, that as foon as he had made an end of offering the burnt-ofering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might falute him.

II And Samuel faid, What haft thou done?" And Saul faid, Because I faw that the people were fcattered from me, and that thou cameft not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

12 Therefore

Samuel reproverb Saul.

Chap. xiv. Jonathan and his armour-bearer,

12 Therefore faid 1, The Philiftines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made fupplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burntoffering.

13 And Samuel faid to Saul, Thou haft done roolishly: thou hatt not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee; for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Ifrael tor

ever.

14 But now thy kingdom fhall not contique: the LORD hath fought him a man atter his own heart, and the LORD hath command. ed him to be captain over his people, becaufe thou hart not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about fix hundred men.

16 And Saul, and Jonathan his fon, and the people that were prefent with them, abode in Gibeah of Beajamm: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

17 And the fpoilers came out of the camp of the Philiftines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:

18 And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looken to the valley of Zeboim, toward the wilderness.

TO Now there was no fmith found throughou all the land of Ifrael: for the Philiftines fail, Left the Hebrews make them fwords or fpears:)

20 But all the Ifraelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his thare, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.

21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the couters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.

22 So it came to país in the day of battle, that there was neither fword nor fpear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his fon was there round.

23 And the garrifon of the Philistines went out to the paffage of Michmash.

CHAP. XIV.

1 Jonathan miraculously fmiteth the Philifines arrijon: 15 a divine terror maketh them beat themselves. 24 Saul's unadvised adjuration bindereth the victory.

Now it came to pafs upon a day, that

Jonathan the fon of Saul faid unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison that is on the other fide. But he told not his

father.

2 And Saul tarried in the uttermoft part of Gibeah, under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about fix hundred men.

3 And Ahiah, the ion of Ahitub, I-chabod's brother, the fon of Phineha, the fon of Eli, the LORD'S prien in shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

4 And between the paffages by which Jonathan fought to go over unto the Phill hines garrison, there was a tharp rock on the one de, and a sharp rock on the other fide: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

5 The fore-front of the one was fituate northward over againt Michmash, and the other fouthward over against Gibeah.

6 And Jonathan faid to the young man that bare his armour, Come and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcifed; it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to fave by many or by few.

7 And his armour-bearer faid unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.

8 Then faid Jonachan, Behold, we will pafs over unto thefe men, and we will dilcover ourselves unto them.

9 It they fay thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will ftand fill in our place, and will not go up uato them.

10 But if they fay thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath de livered them into our hands; and this ball be a fign unto us.

II And both of them difcovered them. felves unto the garrifon of the Philistines: and the Philistines faid, Behold the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

12 And the men of the garrifon answered Jonathan and his armour-bearer, and faid, Come up to us, and we will thew you a thing. And Jonathan faid unto his armour-bearer, Come up after me; for the LORD hath deliver. ei them into the hand of Ifrael.

13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his teet, and his armour. bearer after him: and they tell before Jona than; and his armour-bearer flew after him.

14 And that frit laughter which Jonathan and his armour-bearer made, was about twen ty men, within as it were an halt-acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.

15 And there was trembling in the hoff, in the field, and among all the people; the garrifon, and the fpoilers, they alfo trembled; and the earth quaked: fo it was a very great trembling.

16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked: and behold the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.

17 Then faid Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and fee who is gone from us. And when they had number. ed, behold Jonathan and his armour-bearer were not there.

18 And Saul faid unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God: (for the ark of God was at that time with the children of Ifrael.)

19 And it came to país, while Saul talked unto the pricit, that the noife that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increafed; and Saul faid unto the prieft, With. draw thine hand.

20 And Saul a..d all the people that were with him affembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and behold every man' fword was against his tellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.

21 Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Tiraelites that were with Saul an1 Jonathan.
