14 And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to ferve them.

15 But it shall come to pafs, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to obferve to do all his commandments and his ftatutes which I command thee this day, that all thefe curfes fhall come upon thee, and over.ake thee.

22 The LORD fhall fmite thee with a con. fumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the fword, and with blafting, and with mildew: and they thall purfue thee until thou perish.

23 And thy heaven that is over thy head fhall be brafs, and the earth that is under thee ball be iron.

Curfes threatened. 24 The LORD fhall make the rain of thy land powder and duft: from heaven fhall it come down upon thee, until thou be deftroy. ed.

25 The LORD fhall caufe thee to be smitten before thine enemies: thou that go out one way against them, and flee feven ways before them, and thalt be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

26 And thy carcafs thall be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man thall fray them away.

27 The LORD will fmite thee with the boch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the feab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.

28 The LORD thall fmite thee with madnefs, and blindness, and astonishment of heart:

29 And thou shalt grope at noon-day as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not profper in thy ways; and thou shalt be only oppreffed and fpoiled evermore, and no man hall fave thee.

30 Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man thall lie with her: thou thalt build an houfe, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou fhalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.

31 Thine ox all be flain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine afs jeall be violently taken away from be.ore thy face, and thall not be rettored to thee: thy sheep all be given unto thine enemies, and thou inalt have none to refcu: them.

32 Thy fons and thy daughters ball be given unto another people, and thine eyes Thail look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there fråll be no might in. thine hand.

get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low.

44 He hall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he thall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.

45 Moreover, all these curfes fhall come upon thee, and fhall purfue thee, and over ake thee, till thou be destroyed; becaufe thou hearkenedit not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his ftatutes which he commanded thee.

46 And they thall be upon thee for a fign, and for a wonder, and upon thy feed for

ever.

47 Because thou fervedft not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladnefs of heart, for the abundance of all things;

48 Therefore halt thou ferve thine enemies which the LORD thall fend against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nake inefs, and in want of all things: and he fhall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have defroyed thee.

49 The 1 ORD fhill bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as Swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whofe 1ongue thou shalt not understand;

50 A nation of fierce countenance, which all not regard the perfon of the old, nor thew favour to the young.

51 And he hall eat the fruit of thy cattle,and the fruit of thy land, until thou be deftroyed: which alfo fhall not leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy theep, until he have deftroyed thee. 52 And he shall befiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou truftedft, throughout all thy land: and he thall befiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land which the LORD thy God hath given thee.

53 And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy fons and of thy daugh. ters, (which the LORD thy God hath given thee,) in the siege, and in the ftraitnefs where

with thine enemies thall diftrefs thee :

34 So that the man that is ten ler among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bofom, and toward the remnant of his children which he thall leave:

55 So that he will not give to any of them of the Heth of his children whom he thall eat; because he hath nothing left him in the tiege, and in the traitnefs wherewith thine enemies thall diftrefs thee in all thy gates.

56 The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to fet the fole of her foot upon the ground for delicatenefs and tendernefs, her eye thall be evil toward the husband of her bofom, and toward her fon, and towar i her daughter,

57 And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which the fhall bear for the thall eat them for want of all things fecretly in the fiege and ftraitnefs, wherewith thine enemy thall diftrefs thee in thy gates.

18 if thou wilt not obferve to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayeft fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;

59 Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy feed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and fore ficknetics, and of long continuance.

Exhortation to obedience.

60 Moreover, he will bring upon thee all the difeafes of Egypt, which thou waft afraid of; and they thall cleave unto thee:

61 Alfo every ficknefs, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou be deftroyed.

62 And ye thall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the ftars of heaven for multitu e; because thou wouldeft not obey the voice of the LORD thy God.

63 And it thall come to pafs, that, as the LORD rejoice over you to do you good, and to multiply you; fo the LORD will rejoice over you to deftroy you, and to bring you to nought: and ye fhall be plucked from off the land whither thou goeft to poffefs it.

64 And the LORD fhail fcatter thee among all people from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt ferve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone."

65 And among thefe nations thalt thou find no eafe, neither fhall the fole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD fhall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and forrow of mind:

66 And thy life fhall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and fhalt have none affurance of thy life;

67 In the morning thou shalt fay, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt fay, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the fight of thine eyes which thou shalt fee.

68 And the LORD thall bring thee into Egypt again with thips, by the way whereof Ifpake unto thee, Thou shalt fee it no more again and there ye shall be fold unto your enemies for bond-men and bond-women, and no man thall buy you.

CHA P. XXIX. 2 An exhortation to obedience. 29 Secret things belong unto God. which the LORD commanded Mofes to THESE are the words of the covenant make with the children of Ifrael in the land of Moab, befide the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.

2 And Mofes called unto all Ifrael, and faid unto them, Ye have feen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, unto Pharaoh,and unto all his fervants, and unto all his land:

3 The great temptations which thine eyes have feen, the figns, and thofe great miracles:

4 Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to fee, and ears to hear, unto this day.

5 And I have led you forty years in the wildernefs: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy thoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.

6 Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or ftrong drink; that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.

7 And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Hethbon, and Og the king of Bathan, came out against us unto battle, and wefmote them:

8 And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manaffeh. 9 Keep therefore the words of this cove 10 Ye nant, and do them, that ye may profper in all that ye do.

God's covenant with the people.

Chap. xxx.

10 Ye ftand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Ifrael,

II Your little ones, your wives, and thy Aranger that is in thy camp, from the hewer of thy wool unto the drawer of thy water:

12 That thou thoul left enter into covenant

with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day;

13 That he may eftablish thee to-day for a

people unto himfelf, and that he may be unto hee a God, as he bath faid unto thee, and as he hath fworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Ifaac, and to Jacob.

14 Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath;

15 But with him that fandeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and alfo with bin that is not here with us this day:

16 (For ye know how we have dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the nations which ye paffed by;

17 And ye have feen their abominations, and their idols, wood and ftone, filver and gold, which were among them :)

18 Left there should be among you man, woman, or family, or tribe, whofe heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and ferve the gods of thefe nations; left there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood:

19 And it come to país, when he heareth the words of this curfe, that he blefs himfelf in his heart, faying, I thall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine hear, to add drunkenness to thirit:

20 The LORD will not fpare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy fhall Imoke against that man, and all the curfes that are written in this book fhall lie upon him, and the LORD thall biot out his name from under heaven.

21 And the LORD fhall feparate him unto evil out of all the tribes of lfrael, according to all the curfes of the covenant that are writ. ten in this book of the law:

22 So that the generation to come of your children, that thall rife up after you, and the franger that thall come from a far land, fhall fay, when they fee the plagues of that land, and the fickncifes, which the LORD hath laid upon it;

23 And that the whole land thereof is brimftone, and falt, and burning, that it is not fown, nor beareth, nor any grafs groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath;

24 Even all nations thall fay, Wherefore bath the LORD done thus unto this land? What meanetb the heat of this great anger!

25 Then men fhall fay, Because they have forfaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them, when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt: 26 For they went and ferved other gods, and worthipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them: 27 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curíes that are written in this book:

38 And the LoRD rooted them out of their

Mercies to the penitent,

land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and caft them into another land, as it is this day.

29 The tecret things belong unto the LORD our God; but thofe things which are revealed belong unto us, and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law. C, HA P. XXX. Great mercies promifed unto the penitent. 11 The commandment is manifeft. 15 Death and life are Jet before them.

AND it thall come to pass, when all thefe

things are come upon thee, the bleifing and the curfe, which I have fet before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee,

2 And thalt return unto the LORD thy Go1, and thalt obey his voice, according to all that I command thce this day, thou, and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy foul;

3 That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, a d have compation upon thee, and will return, and gather thee from all the nations whither the LORD thy God hath fcattered the:.

4 If any of thine be driven out unto the outmoft parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee.

5 And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers poffetfed, and thou shalt poffefs it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.

6 And the LORD thy God will circumcife thine heart, and the heart of thy feed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy foul, that theu mayeft live.

7 And the LORD thy God will put all thefo cuifes upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, which perfecuted thee.

8 And thou haft return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments, which I command thee this day.

9 And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers,

to If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his command. ments and his ftatutes, which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy foul.

11For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.

12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldeft fay, Who thall go up for us to heaven and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do

it ?

13 Neither is it beyond the fea, that thou thouldeft fay, Who fhall go over the fea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?

14 But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayeft do it.

15See, I have fet before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;

16 In that I command the. this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and

17 But if thine heart turn away, fo that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worthip other gods, and ferve them;

18 I denounce unto you this day, that ye fhall furely perish; and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land whither thou parent over Jordan to go to poffefs it.

The book of the law. 12 Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and obferve to do all the words of this law;

13 And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to poflefsit.

14 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Be19 I call heaven and earth to record this hold, thy days approach that theu muit die day against you, that I have fet before you call Joshua, and prefent yourselves in the talife and death, bleifing and curfing: there-bernacle of the congregation, that I may give fore choose life, that botn thou and thy feed him a charge. And Mofes and Joshua went, may live; and prefented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation.

20 That thou mayeft love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayeft obey his voice, and that thou mayeft cleave unto him; (for he is thy life, and the length of thy days;) that thou mayeft dwell in the land which the LORD fware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to fiaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

CHAP. XXXI.

[blocks in formation]

3 The LORD thy God, he will go over be. fore thee, and he will defroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt poffefs them: and joshua, he thall go over before thee, as the LORD hath faid.

4 And the LORD fhall do unto them as Le did unto Sihon and to Og, kings of the Amorites; and to the land of them whom he destroyed.

And the LORD fhall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them accordLig unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.

6 Be strong, and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor fortake thee.

7 And Mofes called unto Joshua, and faid unto him in the fight of all Ifrael, Be ftrong, and of a good courage: for thou must go with his people unto the land which the LORD Lath worn unto their fathers to give them; and thou thalt caufe them to inherit it.

8 And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee: he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forfake thee: fear not, neither be difmayed.

9 And Mofes wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the fons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Ifrael.

10 And Mofes commanded them, faying, At the end of every seven years, in the folemnity of the year of release, in the feaft of tabernacles,

11 When all Ifrael is come to appear before the LORD thy God, in the place which he fhall choofe, thu fhalt read this law before all Ifrael in their hearing.

15 And the LORD appeared in the taberna. cle in a pillar of a cloud: and the pillar of the clcu flood over the door of the tabernacle.

16 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Behold, thou shalt fleep with thy fathers; and this people will rife up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land whither they go to be among them, and will forfake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.

17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forfake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they fhall be devoured, and many eviis and troubles hall befall them; fo that they will fay in that day, Are not thefe evils come upon us, becaufe our God is not among us?

18 And I will furely hide my face in that day, for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.

19 Now therefore write ye this fong for you, and teach it the children of Ifrael: put it in their mouths, that this fong may be a witnets for me against the children of Ifrael.

20 For when I fhall have brought them into the land which 1 fware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey, and they fhall have caten and filled themfelves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and ferve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant.

21 And it thall come to pafs, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this fong thail tettity against them as a witnefs; for it thall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their feed: for I know their imagination which they go about even now, before I have brought them into the land which I fware.

22 Mofes therefore wrote this fong the fame day, and taught it the children of Ifrael.

23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and faid, Be ftrong, and of a good courage: for thou thalt bring the children of Ifrael into the Land which I fware unto them; and I will be with thee.

24 And it came to pafs, when Mofes had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished,

25 That Mofes commanded the Levites which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, faying,

26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the fide of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

27 For I know thy rebellion, and thy ftiff neck &

Mofes's fong of God's

Chap. xxxii. neck; behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death? 28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your othcers, that I may fpeak these words in their cars, and call heaven and earth to record against them.

29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourjelves, and turn afide from the way which I have commanded you: and evil will befall you in the latter days, becaufe ye will do evil in the fight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.

30 And Mofes fpake in the ears of all the congregation of Ifrael the words of this fong, until they were ended.

mouth

2 My doctrine fhall drop as the rain, my fpeech thall diail as the dew; as the fmall rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grafs :

3 Because I will publish the name of the LORD; afcribe ye greatnefs unto our God.

4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect; for all his ways are judgment; a God of truth, and without iniquity, juft and right is he.

5 They have corrupted themfelves; their fpot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverfe and crooked generation.

6 Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwife? Is not he thy father that hath bought thee? Hath he not made thee, and established thee!

7 Remember the days of old, confider the years of many generations: aik thy father, and he will thew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee!

8 When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the fons of Adam, he fet the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Ifrael.

9 For the LORD's portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

10 He found him in a defer: land, and in the wafte howling wilderness: he led him about, he inftructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

11 As an cagle stirreth up her neft, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings;

12 So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no ftrange god with him.

13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields, and he made him to fuck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock; 14 Butter of kine, and milk of theep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bathan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didft drink the pure blood of the grape.

15 But Jethurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatnefs : then he forfook God which made him, and lightly efteemed the Rock of his falvation.

16 They provoked him to jealousy with Atrange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.

mercy and Judgment.

17 They facrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fat acrs feared not. 18 Of the Rock that begat tlice thou art un. mindful, and haft forgotten God that formed thee.

19 And when the LORD faw it he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his fons and of his daughters.

20 And he laid, I will hide my face from them, I will fee what their end ball be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.

21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people, I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and fhall burn unto the lowest hell, and thall con fume the earth with her increase, and fet on fire the foundations of the mountains.

23 I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will fpend mine arrows upon them.

24 They fall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will alfo fend the teeth of bearts upon them, with the poison of ferpents of the duft.

25 The fword without, and terror within, fhall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the fuckling alfo, with the man of grey hairs.

26 1 faid, I would fcatter them into cor. ners, I would make the remembrance of them to ceafe from among men :

27 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, left their adverfaries fhould behave themselves ftrangely, ana leit they thould fay, Our hand is high, and the LORD hath not done all this.

28 For they are a nation void of counfel neither is there any understanding in them. 29 O that they were wife, that they un deritood this, that they would confider their latter end!

30 How thould one chafe a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had fold them, and the LORD had fhut them up?

31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.

32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clutters are bitter:

33 Their wine is the poifon of dragons, and the cruel venom of afps.

34 is not this laid up in ftore with me, and fealed up among my treafures?

35 To me belongeth vengeance and recom. penfe: their foot thall flide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that thall come upon them make hafte.

36 For the LORD thall judge his people, and repent h..nfelt for his fervants: when he feeth that their power is gone, and there is none thut up or left.

37 And he thall fay, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they truited;

38 Which did eat the fat of their facrifices, and drank the wine of their drink-offerings Let them rife up and help you, and be your protection.
