Whofe adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the

rnament of a meek and quiet fpirit, which

is in the light of God of great price.

5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women alfo, who trufted in God, adorned themselves, being in fubjection unto their own husbands:

6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whofe daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any

amazement.

7 Lakewife, ye hufbands, dwell with them accorting to knowle ige, giving honour unto the wire, as unto the weaker veffel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compation one of another; love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwife bleming; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye thould inherit a bletting.

10 For he that will love life and fee good days, let him retrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they fpeak no guile:

11 Let him efchew evil, and do good; let him feek peace and enfue it.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

14 But and it ye fuffer for righteoufnefs fake, happy are ye; and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

15 But fanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an anfiver to every man that afketh you a reafon of the hope that is in you with meeknefs and lear:

16 Having a good confcience; that, where as they fpeak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falfely accafe your good converfation in Chrit,

17 For it is better, if the will of God be fe, that ye futter for well-doing than for evil

doing.

18 For Chrift alfo hath once faffered for fins, the jutt for the unjult, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the eth, but quickened by the Spirit:

19 By which alfo he went and preached unto the fpirits in prison;

20 Which fometime were disobedient, when once the long-fuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eigh. fouls, were faved by water.

21 The like figure whereunto even baptifm doth alto now fave us (not the putting away of the filth of the fleth, but the anfwer of a good confcience toward God,) by the refur. rection of Jefus Chrift:

Confirming them in the hope of the increate of God's grace, 7 he exhorteth them, by faith and good works, to make their calling fure. IMON Peter, a fervant and an apoftle of Jefus Chrift, to them that have obtain. ed like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jefus Christ;

2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jefus our Lord,

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue :

4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promifes: that by thefe ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having efcaped the corruption that is in the world through luft.

5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godlinefs;

7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

8 For if there things be in you and abound, they make you that ye ball neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jefus Chrift.

9 But ne that lacketh thefe things is blind, and cannot fee afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old fins.

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election fure: for if ye do thefe things, ye thall never fall:

11 Por fo an entrance shall be minittered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jefus Chrift.

12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the prefent truth.

13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to ftir you up by putting yo in remembrance;

14 Knowing that thortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jefus Chrif hath thewed me.

15 Moreover, I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

16 For we have not followed cunningly de. vifed tables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jefus Chrift, but were eye witneffes of his majetty.

17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came fuch a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleafed.

18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

19 We have alfo a more fure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take need, as unto a light that thineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day ftar arife in your hearts:

20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the fcripture is of any private interpre tation.

19 While they promise them liberty, they themfelves are the fervants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the fame is he brought in bondage.
