But they that will be rich fall into temp. n and afnare, and into many fool:th and tul luits, which drown men in deftrucand perdition.

For the love of money is the root of all which while fome coveted after, they e erred from the raith, and pierced them es through with many forrows.

But thou, O man of God, flee thefe gs; and follow after righteoufnefs, godfs, faith, love, patience, meekness. 2 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold eternal life, whereunto thou art alfo calland haft profeffed a good profeffion before azany witnelles.

CHAP. I.

Paul's love to Timothy, and Timothy's faith. 8 Paul giveth divers exhortations. AUL an apostle of Jefus Chrift by the will Pof God, according to the promife of life which is in Chrift Jefus,

a To Timothy, my dearly beloved fon: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Facher, and Chrift Jefus our Lord.

3 I thank God, whom I ferve from my forefathers with pure confcience, that without ceating I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

4 Greatly defiring to fee thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt firit in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am perfuaded that in thee alfo.

6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance, that thou ftir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

7 For God hath not given us the fpirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a found mind.

8 3e not thou therefore afhamed of the .teftimony of our Lord, nor of me his prifoner: but be thou partaker of the affic. tions of the gospel according to the power of God;

9 Who hath faved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpofe and grace, which was given us in Christ Jefus before the world began;

10 But is now made manifest by the appear. ing of our Saviour Jefus Chrift, who hath abolithed death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

11 Whereunto 1 am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gen.

12 For the which caufe I alfo fuffer thefe things: nevertheless, I am not athamed: for I know whom I have believed, and I am perfuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

13 Hold faft the form of found words, which thou haft heard of me, is faith and love which is in Chrift Jefus.

14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghott which dwelleth in us.

15 This thou knoweft, that all they which are in Afia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Oneliphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not athamed of my chain.

17 But when he was in Rome, he fought me out very diligently, and found me.

18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he miniftered unto me at Ephefus thou knoweft very well. CHAP. II.

1 Timothy exhorted to conftancy and perfeve rance, 15 and to few himself approved. HOU theretore, my fon, be ftrong in the grace that is in Chrift Jefus.

2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witneffes, the fame commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to

3 Thou therefore endure hardnefs, as a good foldier of Jefus Chrift.

4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chofen him to be a foldier.

5 And if a man also strive for materies, yet is he not crowned, except he ftrive lawfully. 6 The husbandman that laboureth must be firit partaker of the fruits.

14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord, that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the fubverting of the hearers.

.4 To Titus, mine own fon after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and the Lord Jefus Christ our Saviour.

5 For this caufe left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldeft fet in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

6 If any be blamelets, the husband of one wife, having faithful children, not accused of, riot, or unruly.

7 For a bihop must be blamelefs, as the fteward or God; not felt-willed, not foon angry, not given to wine, no triker, not given to filthy lucre;

8 But a lover of hofpitality, a lover of good men, fober, juit, holy, temperate;

9 Holding talt the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by found doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainfayers.

IC For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, fpecially they of the circumcition:

II Whofe mouths must be ftopped, who fubvert whole houfes, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's fake.

12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, faid, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beafts, flow bellies.

13 This witnefs is true. Wherefore rebuke them tharply, that they may be found in the faith;

14 Not giving heed, to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

2 That the aged men be fober, grave, tem. perate, found in faith, in charity, in patience.

3 The aged women likewife, that they be in behaviour as becometh holinefs, not falfe accufers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

4 That they may teach the young vomen to be fober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

5 To be difcreet, chatte, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own hutbands, that the word of God be not blafphemed.

6 Young men likewife exhort to be fober minded.

7 In all things fhewing thyfelfa pattern of good works: in doctrine ewing uncorruptnefs, gravity, fincerity,

8 Sound fpeech that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be afhamed, having no evil thing to fay of you.

9 Exhort fervants to be obedient unto their own mailers, and to please them well in all things; not anfwering again:

10 Not purloining, but thewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

11 For the grace of God that bringeth falvation hath appeared to all men,

12 Teaching us that, denying ungodlinefs this present and worldly lufts, we should live foberly, righteously, and godly, in worin;

13 Looking for that bleffed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jefus Chrift;

Herefore we ought to give the more earnett heed to the things which we have heard, left at any time we should let them lip.

2 For if the word spoken by angels was fedtaft, and every tranigreifion and difobedience received a juft recompenfe of reward;

3 How thall we efcape, it we neglect fo great falvation; which at the firft began to be fpoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

4 God alfo bearing them witnefs, both with figns and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghoft, according to his own will?

5 For unto the angels hath he not put in fubjection the world to come, whereof we fpeak.

7 Thou madeft him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedit him with glory and honour, and didft fet him over the works of thy hands:

8 Thou haft put all things in fubjection under his feet. For in that he put all in fubjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we fee not yet all things put under him.

9 But we fee Jefus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the futtering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God thould tafte death for every man.

10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bring ing many fons unto glory, to make the captain of their falvation perfect through fufferings.

11 For both he that fanctifieth and they who are fanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not afhamed to call them bre thren,

12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midft of the church will I ng praise unto thee.

13 And again, I will put my truft in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

14 For as much then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he alfo himself likewife took part of the fame; that through death he might deftroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime fubject to bondage.

16 For verily he took not on him the na ture of angels; but he took on bim the feed of Abraham.

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the fins of the people.
