Paul's mindfulness

1. THESSALONIANS.

of the Thefais

3 For our exhortation was not of deceit, we told you before that we thor'd nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: tribulation; even as it came to pais, know.

4 But as we were allowed of God to be put In truft with the gofpel, ven fo we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth

our hearts.

5 For neither at any time ufed we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetoufnefs; God is witnefs:

6 Nor of men fought we glory, neither of you, nor yer of others, when we might have been burdenfome, as the apostles of Chrift.

7 But we were gentle among you, even as a nurfe cherisheth her children:

8 So being affectionately defirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gofpel of God only, but alfo our own fouls, because ye were dear unto us.

9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, becaufe we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gofpel of God. 10 Ye are witneffes, and God alfo, how holly and juftly and unblameably we be haved ourselves among you that believe:

11 As ye know, how we exhorted and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father oth his children,

12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. 13 For this caufe alfo thank we God with. out ceafing, becaufe, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is In truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh alfo in you that believe.

14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God, which in Judea are in Chrift Jefus for ye alfo have fuffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:

15 Who both killed the Lord Jefus, and their own prophets, and have perfecuted us; and they pleafe not God, and are contrary to all men:

16 Forbidding us to fpeak to the Gentiles that they might be faved, to fill up their fins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to

the uttermoft.

[blocks in formation]

5 For this caufe, when I could no forbear, I fent to know your faith, le fome means the tempter have temptes and our labour be in vain.

6 But now when Timotheus came free unto us, and brought us good tidings or faith and charity, and that ye have gon membrance of us always, defiring great fee us, as we also to see you :

Therefore, brethren, we were com over you in all our affiction and difri your faith

8 For now we live, if ye stand fad u Lord.

9 For what thanks can we render again for you, for all the joy wherewit joy for your fakes betore our God;

10 Night and day praying exceedingly we might fee your lace, and might pe that which is lacking in your faith!

11 Now God himself and our Fer and our Lord Jefus Chrift, direct car unto you.

12 And the Lord make you to increa abound in love one toward another, as ward all men, even as we do toward you.

13 To the end he may ftablish your unblameable in holiness before God, en our Father, at the coming of our Lord Je Christ with all his faints.

CHAP. IV.

7 For God hath not caled us unto us. cleannefs, but unto holiness.

8 He therefore that defpifeth, defpieth not man but God, who hath alfo given i us his holy fpirit.

9 But as touching brotherly love ye need are taught of God to love one another.

Tor the times and the feafons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you, 2 For yourfelves know perfectly that the day of the Lord fo cometh as a thief in the night.

3 For when they fhall fay, Peace and safety; then fudden deftruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day fhould overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Therefore, let us not fleep, as do others; but let us watch and be fober.

7 For they that fleep fleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

But let us, who are of the day, be fober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet the hope of falvation:

their faith, love, Se.

9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain falvation by our Lord Jefus Chrift,

10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or fleep, we should live together with him. 11 Wherefore, comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as alfo ye do.

12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

13 And to efteem them very highly in love for their work's fake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feeble minded, fupport the weak, be patient toward all men.

15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. 16 Rejoice evermore.

17 Pray without ceafing.

18 In every thing give thanks for this is the will of God in Chrift Jefus concern. ing you.

19 Quench not the Spirit.

20 Defpife not prophesyings.

21 Prove all things; hold faft that which is good

22 Abftain from all appearance of evil.

23 And the very God of peace fanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole ipirit and foul and body be preferved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jefus Chrift.

24 Faithful is he that calleth you, whe alfo will do it.

25 Brethren, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kifs. 27 I Charge you by the Lord that this epittle be read unto all the holy brethren. 28 The grace of our Lord Jefus Chrift be with you. Amen.

CHAP. I.

He beweth his good opinion of their faith, love, and patience; and comforteth them again perfecution. PAUL and Selvanuse Thermites, unto the church of the Theffalonians in God our Father, and the Lord Jefus Chrift: 2 Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jefus Chrift.

3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, becaufe that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth:

4 so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your perfecutions and tribulations that

ye endure:

Which is a manifeft token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be count ed worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye alfo fuffer:

6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God, to recompenfe tripulation to them that trouble you:

And to you who are troubled reft with us, when the Lord Jefus thall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

8 In flaming fire, taking vengeance on them top kotw not God, and that obey not the gofpel of our Lord Jefus Chrift:

9 Who fhall be punished with everlafting deftruction from the prefence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

10 When he shall come to be glorified in his faints, and to be admired in all them th believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

11 Wherefore alfo we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of bis goodness, and the work of faith with power:

12 That the name of our Lord Jefus Chrift may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and of the Lord Jefus Chrift.

Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jelus Chrift, and by our gathering together unto him,

That ye be not foou thaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by fpirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Chritt is at hand.

3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day ball not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of fin be revealed, the fon or perdition;

4 Who oppofeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; fo that he as God fitteth in the temple of God, fhewing himfelt that he is God.

5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you thefe things?

6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already Work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

8 And then thall that Wiched be revealed, whom the Lord thall confume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall deftroy with the brightness of his coming:

11 And for this caufe God fhall fend them trong delinion, that they thould believe a lie; 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteoufnels.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chofen you to falvation through fanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

14 Whercunto he called you by our gofpel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jefus Chrift.

15 Thereiore, brethren, ftand faft, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epiftie,

7 Moreover, he muft have a good report of them which are without; left he fall into reproach, and the fnate of the devil.

8 Likewife muff the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

9 Holding the myttery of the faith in a pure confcience.

10 And let thefe alfo first be proved; then let them ufe the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

11 Even fo muft their wives be grave, not flanderers, fober, faithful in all things.

12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houfes well.

13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well, purchafe to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Chrift Jefus.

14 Thefe things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee thortly:

CHAP. IV.

Apoftafy foretold.

I. TIMOTHY.

Now the Spirit fpeaketh exprefsly, that in the latter times fome fhall depart from the faith, giving heed to feducing fpirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Speaking lies in hypocrify: having their contcience feared with a hot iron,

3 Forbidding to marry and commanding to abitain from meats which God hath created to be received with thankfgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refuted, if it be received with thanksgiving:

s For it is fanctified by the word of God and prayer.

6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minifter of Jefus Chrift, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou haft attained.

7 But retufe profane and old wives' fables, and exercife thyfelt rather unto godliness, 8 For bodily exercife profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promite of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

9 This is a faithful faying and worthy of all acceptation.

10 For therefore we both labour and fuffer reproach, because we truft in the living God, who is the faviour of all men, especially of thofe that believe.

11 These things command and teach. 12 Let no man defpife thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in converfation, in charity, in fpirit, in faith, in purity.

13 Fill I come, give attendance to reading, 10 exhortation, to doctrine.

14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the pretbytery.

15 Meditate upon these things: give thyfelt wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

16 Take heed unto thyfelf, and unto thy. doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both fave thyself, and them that hear thee.
