Chap. xviil.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me! have given them; that they may be one, even

as we are one:

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou haft fent me, and haft loved them, as thou haft loved me.

24 Father, I will that they alfo, whom thou hat given me be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou haft given me for thou lovedit me before the foundation of the world.

23 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and thefe have known that thou hatt fent me.

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hatt loved me may be in them, and I in them.

CHAP. XVIII.

15 Fudas betrayeth Chrift, Peter denieth bim. 227efus is arraigned before Pilate.

WHEN Jefus had fpoken thefe words, he

went forth with his dife, ples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, d his difciples.

2 And Judas alfo, which betrayed him, knew the place; for Jefus oft-times retorted thither with his difciples.

3 Tulas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chic: prieits and Pharifees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches, and weapons.

4 Jefus therefore, knowing all things that fhould come upon him, went forth, and faid unto them, Whom feek ye?

5 They aufwered him, Jefus of Nazareth. Jefus faith unto them, I am be. And Julas alfo, which betrayed him, flood with them. 6 As foon then as he had fad unto them, I am be, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

7 Then afked he then again, Whom feek ye? And they faid, Jefus of Nazareth.

8 Jefus anfwered, I have told you that I am be. It therefore ye feck me, let thefe,go their wway:

That the faying might be fulfilled, which he fpake, Of them which thou gavest me have I loft none.

10 Then Simon Peter having a fword drew it, and fmote the high prie's fervant, and cut off his right ear. The fervant's name was Malchus.

11 Then faid Jefus unto Peter, Put up thy fword into the heath: the cup which my Father hath given me, fhall I not drink it?

12 Then the band, and the captain, and officers of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him,

13 And led him away to Annas firft: (for he was father-in-law to Calaphas, which was the high priest that fame year.)

14 Now Caiaphas was he which gave counfel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one nian thould die for the people.

15 And Simon Peter followed Jefus, and So did another difciple. That difciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jefus into the palace of the high priest.

16 But Peter flood at the door without.

Then went out that other difciple, which was known unto the high priest, and fake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

17 Then faith the damfel that kept the

18 And the fervants and officers flood there, who had made a fire or coals, (for it was cold,) and they warmed themselves and Peter flood with them, and warmed himfelt.

19 The high priest then asked Jefus of his difciples and of his doctrine.

20 Jefus anfwered him, I fpake openly to the world; I ever taught in the fynagogue, and in the tempie, whither the Jews always refort: and in fecret have I faid rothing.

21 Why arkeit thou me; alk them which heard me, what I have faid unto them: beholl, they know what I faid.

22 And when he had thus fpoken, one of the officers which stood by truck Tefus with the palm of his hand, faying, Anfwereft thou the high priest fo?

23 letus answered him, IfI have spoken evil, bear witnefs of the evil; but if well, Why fmitent chou me?

'24 (Now Annas had fent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.)

25 And Simon Peter food and warmed himfelt: they laid therefore unto him, Art not then alfo one of his difciples? He denied 77, and faii, I am not.

26 One of the fervants of the high prieft (being his kinfnian whofe ear Peter cut off) faith, Did not 1 fee thee in the garden with him?

27 Peter then denied again; and immediate. ly the cock crew.

28 Then led they Jefus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judg ment-hall, lett they should be defled; but that they might eat the paffover.

29 Pilate then went out unto them, and faid, What accufation bring ye againft this man?

30 They answered and faid unto him, I he were not a malefactor, we would not have de. livered him up unto thee.

31 Then faid Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews theretore faid unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

32 That the faying of Jefus might be ful filled, which he ipake, fignifying what death he should die.

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment. hail again, and called Jefus, and faid unto him, Art thou the king of the Jews?

34 Jefus answered him, Sayeft thou this thing of thyfelt, or did others tell it thee of me?

35 Pilate anfwered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me. What hat thou done?

36 Jetus anfwered, My kingdom is not of this world. ff my kingdom were of this world, then would my fervants fight, that I fhould not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

37 Pilate theretore faid unto him, Art thou a king then? Jefus answered, Thou fayeft that I am a king. To this end was 1 born, and for this caufe came I into the world, that I should bear witnefs unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38 Pilate faith unto him, What is truth? And when he had faid this he went out again unto the Jews, and faith unto them, I find in him no tault at all.

1 Chrift is forged, crowned with thorns, beaten and crucified: 28 he dieth, 38 and is buried.

THEN Pilate therefore took Jesus, and fcourged him.

2 And the foldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

3 And faid, Hail, king of the Jews! and they fmote him with their hands."

4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and faith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

Then came Jefus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate faith unto them, Behold the man!

6 When the chief priests therefore and officers faw him, they cried out, faying, Crucify bim, crucity bim. Pilate faith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him; for I find no

fault in him.

7 The Jews anfwered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, becaufe he made himself the Son of God.

8 When Pilate therefore heard that faying, be was the more afraid;

9 And went again into the judgment-hall, and faith unto Jefus, Whence art thou? But Jefus gave him no answer.

To Then faith Pilate unto him, Speakeft thou not unto me! Knoweit thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to releafe thee?

11 je us anfwered, Thou couldeft have no power at all again me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater fin.

12 And from thenceforth Pilate fought to releafe him: but the Jews cried out, faying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cefar's friend whofoever maketh himself a king, fpeaketh against Cefar.

13 When Pilate therefore heard that faying, he brought Jefus forth, and fat down in the judgment-feat, in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14 And it was the preparation of the pafsover, and about the fixth hour: and he faith unto the Jews, Behold your king!

15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate faith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priefts anfwered, We have no king but

Cefar.

16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jefus, and led him away.

17 And he bearing his crofs went forth into place called the place of a (cull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha;

18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either fide one, and Jefus in the

midit.

19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

and crucifizie 20. This title then read many of the jew for the place where Jefus was crucified nigh to the city: and it was written n brew, and Greek, and Latin.

21 Then faid the chief priests of Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King e the Jews; but that he faid, I am king o the Jews.

22 Pilate answered, What I have written, ave written.

23 Then the foldiers, when they had cified Jefus, took his garments, (and ma parts, to every foldier a part,) and alie coat: now the coat was without feam, 437 from the top throughout.

24 They faid therefore among themselve Let us not rend it, but caft lots for it, what it thall be: that the fcripture might be filled, which faith, They parted my ramme among them, and for my refture they di caft lots. These things therefore the fol diers did.

25 Now there flood by the crofs of Jefus his mother, and his mother's fifter, Mary thr wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26 When Jefus therefore faw his mother, and the difciple standing by whom he loved, he faith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy fon!

27 Then faith he to the difciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that difciple took her unto his own home.

28 After this, Jefus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the fcrip ture might be fulfilled, faith, I thirat.

29 Now there was fet a veffel full of vinegar: and they filled a fponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyffop, and put it to his mouth.

30 When Jefus therefore had received the vinegar, he faid, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghoft.

31 The Jews therefore because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the crofs on the fabbath day, (for that fabbath day was an high day,) befought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and test they might be taken away.

32 Then came the foldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

33 But when they came to Jefus, and faw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34 But one of the foldiers with a spear pierced his fide, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35 And he that faw it bare record, and his record is true; and he knoweth that he fath true, that ye might believe.

36 For these things were done, that the fcripture thould be fulfilled, A bone of him fhall not be broken.

37 And again another fcripture faith, They fhall look on him whom they pierced.

38 And after this Jofeph of Arimathea, (being a difciple of Jefus, but fecretly for fear of the Jews,) befought Pilare that he might take away the body of Jefus Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore and took the body of Jefus.

and

39 And there came alfo Nicodemus (which at the first came to Jefus by night,) and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new fepulchre, wherein was never man yet a lai.

42 There laid they Jefus therefore, because of the Jews preparation-day; for the fepulchre was nigh at hand.

1 Mary cometh to the fepulchre, 3 and Peter and John. 24 The incredulity of Thomas.

E firit day of the week cometh Mary Magalese early, when it was yet dark, unto the fepulchre, and feeth the tone taken away from the fepulchre.

2 Then the runneth, an i cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other difciple whom Jefus loved, and faith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the fepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

3 Peter therefore went torch, and that other difciple, and came to the fepulchre.

So they ran both togetner: and the other difciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the fepulchre.

5 And he, ftooping down, and looking in, faw the linen clothes lying; yet went he

not in.

6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the fepulchre, and feeth the linen clothes lie,

7 And the napkin that was about his head not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

8 Then went in alfo that other difciple, which came firit to the fepulchre, and he faw and believed.

9 For as yet they knew not the fcripture, that he mutt rife again from the dead.

10 Then the difciples went away again unto their own home.

11 ¶ But Mary flood without at the fepulchre, weeping: and, as the wept, the flooped down, and looked into the fepulchre,

12 And feeth two angels in white fitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jefus had lain.

13 And they fay unto her, Woman, why weepert thou? She faith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know

not where they have laid him.

14 And when the had thus faid, She turned herelt back, and faw Jefus ftanding, and knew not that it was Jefus.

15 Jefus faith unto her, Woman, why weepeft thou? whom feekeft thou? She, fuppofing him to be the gardener, faith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou haft laid him, and I will take him away.

16 Jefus faith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and faith unto him, Rabboni; which is to fay, Mafter.

17 Jefus faith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet afceaded to my Father: but go to my brethren, and fay unto them, I afcend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

18 Mary Magdalene came and told the difciples that the had feen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

19Then the fame day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors

21 Then faid Jefus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even fo fend I you.

22 And when he had faid this, he breathed on them, and faith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghoft.

23 Whofe foever fins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whofe foever jins ye retain, they are retained.

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jefus came.

25 The other difciples therefore faid unto him, We have feen the LORD. But he faid unto them, Except I thall fee in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his fide, I will not believe.

26¶And after eight days, again his dif ciples were within, and Thomas with them. Then came Jefus, the doors being shut, and flood in the midft, and faid, Peace be unto you.

27 Then faith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thruit it into my fide: and be not faithlefs, but believing.

28 And Thomas anfwered and faid unto him, My Lord, and my God.

29 Jefus faith unto him, Thomas, because thou haft feen me, thou haft believed: bleffed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

30 And many other figns truly did Jefus in the prefence of his difciples, which are not written in this book:

31 But thefe are written, that ye might believe that Jefus is the Chrift, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through
