CHAP. XXVI.

3 The rulers confpire againft Chrift: 14 Judas felleth him. 17 Chrift eateth the palover. AND it came to país, when Jefus had finifhed all there fayings, he faid unto his difciples,

2 Ye know that after two days is the feaft of the paffover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.

3 Then affembled together the chief priests, and the fcribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,

4 And confulted that they might take Jefus by fubtilty, and kill him.

5 But they faid, Not on the feaft-day, left there be an uproar among the people.

6 Now when Jefus was in Bethany, in the houfe of Simon the leper,

7 There came unto him a woman having an alabafter-hox of very precious ointment, and poure it on his head as he fat at meat. 8 But when his difciples faw it, they had Indignation, faying, To what purpofe is this wage?

10 When Jefus understood it, he faid reto them, Why trouble ye the woman?r the hath wrought a good work upon me. 11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.

12 For in that the hath poured this ointment on my body, the did it for my burial. 13 Verily I fay unto you, Wherefoever this gospel fhall be preached in the whole world, there shall alfo this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

14 Then one of the twelve, called Ju das Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,

15 And faid unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of filver.

16 And from that time he fought oppor. tunity to betray him.

17 Now the first day of the feaft of ua. leavened bread, the difciples came to Jefus, faying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the paffover?

18 And he said, Go into the city to fuch a man, and fay unto him, The matter faith, my time is at hand; I will keep the paffover at thy houfe with my difciples.

19 And the difciples did as Jefus had ap pointed them; and they made ready the paffover.

20 Now when the even was come, he fat down with the twelve.

21 And as they did eat, he faid, Verily I fay unto you, that one of you fhall betray me.

22 And they were exceeding forrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?

23 And he anfwered and faid, He that dippeth his hand with me in the difh, the fame fhall betray me.

24 The Son of Man goeth, as it is written of him; but woe unto that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, an fwered, and faid, Mafter, is it I? He said unto him, thou haft faid."

26 And as they were eating, Jefus took bread, and bleffed it, and brake it, and gave it to the difciples, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body.

27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, faying, Drink ye all of it;

28 For this is my blood of the new teftament, which is fhed for many for the remiffion of fins.

29 But I fay unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

30 And when they had fung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

31 Then faith Jefus unto them, All ye fhall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will fmite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

32 But after I am rifen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

33 Peter anfwered and faid unto him, Though all men thall be offended becaufe of thee, yet will I never be offended. D'd3 34 Jefus

Judas betrayeth Chriß.

9. MATTHEW. 34 Jefus faid uuto him, Verily I fay unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, tu halt deny me thrice.

3. Peter faid unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewife alfo faid all the difciples.

36 Then cometh Jefus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and faith unto the difciples, sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.

37 And he took with him Peter and the two fons of Zebedee, and began to be for. rowful and very heavy.

38 Then faith he unto them, My foul is exceeding forrowful, even unto death: tar. ry ye here, and watch with me.

39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, faying, O my Father, ifit be poffible, let this cup pafs from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt. 40 And he cometh unto the difciples, and findeth them afleep, and faith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the fleth is weak.

49 He went away again the fecond time, and prayed, faying, O my Father, if this cup may not país away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

43 And he came and found them afleep again for their eyes were heavy.

44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, faying the fame

wor is.

45 Then cometh he to his difciples, and faith unto them, Sleep on aow, and take your reft: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of finners.

46 Rife, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.

47 And while he yet fpake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with fwords and ftaves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a fign, faying, Whomfoever I fhall kifs, that fame is he; hold him faft

49 And forthwith he came to Jefus, and faid, Hail, Matter; and kiffed him.

50 And Jefus faid unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they and laid hands on Jefus, and took him.

51 And, behold, one of them, which were with Jefus, ftretched out bis hand, and drew his fword, and ftruck a fervant of the high priest's, and fmote off his ear.

[ocr errors]

52 Then faid Jefus unto him, Put up again thy fword into his place: for all they that take the fword shall perish with the fword.

53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

54 But how then thall the fcriptures be

fulfille i. that thus it muit be?

55 In that fame hour faid Jefus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with fwords and taves for to take me? I fat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.

56 But all this was done, that the fcriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the difciples forfook him, and fled. 67 And they that had laid hold en

Jefus, led him away to Caiaphas the hig prieft, where the fcribes and the elders were affembled.

58 But Peter followed him afar off, unte the high prief's palace, and went in, and fat with the fervants to fee the end.

59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, fought talfe witness againft Jefus, to put him to death;

60 But found none: yea, though many falle witnetles came, yet found they none. At the last came two falfe witnesses,

61 And faid, This fellow faid, I am able to dentroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.

6. And the high prieft arose, and said unto him, Anfwereft thou nothing? what is it which thefe witness against thee!

63 But Jefus held his peace. And the high priest anfwered and faid unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the son of God.

64 Jefus faith unto him, Thou haft said: nevertheless, I fay unto you, Hereafter thall ye fee the son of Man fitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, faying, He hath spoken blafphemy; what further need have we of witneffes! behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

66 What think ye? They answered and faid, He is guilty of death.

67 Then did they fpit in his face, and bufteted him; and others fmote bin with the palms of their hands,

68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Chrifft, Who is he that fuiste thee!

69 Now Peter fat without in the palace: and a damfel can.e unto him, faying, Thou alfo wait with Jefus of Galilee.

70 But he denied before them all, faying, I know not what thou fayeft.

71 And when he was gone out into the porch, another maia faw him, and Taid unto them that were there, This fellow was alfo with Jefus of Nazareth.

72 And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.

73 And after a while came unto him they that flood by, and faid to Peter. Surely thou alfo art one of them; for thy speech bewray. eth thee.

74 Then began he to curfe and to swear, faying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.

75 And Peter remembered the word of Jefus, which faid unto him, Before the cock crow, thou fhalt deny me thrice And he went out, and wept bitterly.

CHAP. XXVII.

1 Chrift delivered to Pilate, 5 Judas bangeth himjelf. 35 Chrifi is crucified. WHEN the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jefus to put him to death. 2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

3Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he faw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of filver to the chief priests and elders, 4 Saying, I have finned, in that I have be trayed

Barabhas released.

Chap. xxvii. trayed the innocent blood. And they faid, What is that to us? fee thou to that.

5 And he caft down the pieces of filver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

6 And the chief priests took the filver picces, and faid, It is not lawful for to put them into the treafury, because it is the price of blood.

7 And they took counfel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury itrangers in. 8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.

9 (Then was fulfilled that which was fpoken by Jeremy the prophet, faying, Andtlicy took the thirty pieces of filver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Ifrael did value;

10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.)

11 And Jefus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, faying, Art thou the king of the Jews? And Jefus faid unto him, Thou fayeft.

12 And when he was accused of the chief pricfts and elders, he answered nothing.

13 Then faith Pilate unto him, Hearcft thou not how many things they withefs against thee?

14 And he answered him to never a word; infomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

15 Now at that feaft the governor was wont to releafe unto the people a prifoner, whom they would.

16 And they had then a notable prifoner, called Barabbas.

17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate faid unto them, Whom will ye that I releafe unto you Barabbas, or Jefus, which is called Chrift?

18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

19 When he was fet down on the judgment feat, his wife fent unto him, faying, Have thou nothing to do with that juft inan: for I have fuffered many things this day in a dream becaufe of him.

20 But the chief priests and elders perfuaded the multitude, that they thould atk Barabbas, and destroy Jefus.

21 The governor answered and faid unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I releafe unto you? They fai, Barabbas.

22 Pilate faith unto them, What shall I do then with Jefus, which is called Chrift? They all fay unto him, Let him be crucified.

23 And the governor faid, Why? what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, faying, Let him be crucified.

24 When Pilate faw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and wathed his hands before the multitude, faying, I am innocent of the blood of this juft perfon; fee ye to it. 25 Then anfwered all the people, and faid, His blood be on us, and on our children.

26 Then releafed he Barabbas unto them and when he had fcourged Jefus, he delivered him to be crucified.

27 Then the foldiers of the governor took Jefus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of foldiers.

28 And they stripped him, and put on him a fcarlet robe.

Chrift crucified. 29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, the put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed Le knee before him, and mocked him, faying, Hail, king of the Jews!

30 And they fpit upon him, and took the reed, and fmote him on the head.

31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his crois.

33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to fay, A place of a ikull,

34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tafted thereof, he would not drink.

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, caffing lots: that it might be fulfilled which was fpoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vefture did they caft lots.

36 And fitting down, they watched him there:

37 And fet up over his head his accufation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him; one on the right hand, and ancther on the left.

39 And they that paffed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

40 And faying, Thou that deftroyeft the temple, and buildeft it in three days, fave thy felt. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

41 Likewife alfo the chief priests, mocking bim, with the fcribes and elders, faid,

42 He faved others, himself he cannot fave. If he be the King of Ifrael, let him now come down from the crofs, and we will believe him.

43 He trufted in God: let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

44 The thieves alfo, which were crucified with him, cat the fame in his teeth.

45 Now from the fixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jefus cried with a loud voice, faying, Eli, Eli, lama fabachthani? that is to fay, My God, my God, why hait thou torfaken me?

47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.

48 And ftraightway one of them ran, and took a fponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

49 The reft faid, Let be, let us fee whe. ther Flias will come to fave him.

So Jefus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghoft.

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of faints which flept arofe,

IN the end of the fabbath, as it began to

5 And the angel aufwered and laid unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye feek Jefus, which was crue.fied.

6 He is not here; for he is rifen, as he faid. Come, fee the place where the Lord lay:

7 And go quickly, and tell his difciples that he is rifen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there thall ye ice him: lo, I have told you."

8 And they departed quickly from the fepulchre with tear and great joy, and did run to bring his difciples werd.

9And as they wear to tell his difciples, behold, Jefus met them, faying, All bal And they came and held him by the teet, an! worth:pped him.

10 Then faid Jefus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there thall they fee me.

11 Now when they were going, behold, fome of the watch came into the city, and thewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

12 And when they were affembled with the elbers, and had taken counfel, they gave large money unto the foldiers,

13 Saying, Say ye, His difciples came by night, and tole him a while we slept. 14 And if this come to the governor's ears, we will perfuade him, and fecure you.

15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this faying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

16qThen the eleven difciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jefus ha appointed them.

17 And when they faw him they wor thippel him: but fomie doubted.

12 And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness.

13 And he was there in the wildernefs forty days tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beafts: and the angels ministered unto him.

14 Now after that John was put in prifon, Jefus came into Galilee, preaching the gofpel of the kingdom of God,

15 And faying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

16 Now as he walked by the fea of Galilee, he faw Simon, and Andrew his brother, cafting a net into the fea: (for they were fithers:)

22 And they were aftonished at his doc trine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the fcribes.

23 And there was in their fynagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,

24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jefus of Nazereth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

25 And Jefus rebuked him, faying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

26 And when the unclean fpirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came

out of him.

27 And they were all amazed, infomuch that they queftioned among themfelves, fay. ing, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean fpirits, and they do obey him.

28 And immediately his fame fpread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

35 And in the morning, rifing up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a folitary place, and there prayed.

36 And Simon, and they that were with him, foliowed after him.

37 And when they had found him, they faid unto him, All men feek for thee.

38 And he faid unto them, L us go in. to the next towns, that I may preach there alfo: for therefore came I forth.

39 And he preached in their fynagogues throughout all Galilee, and caft out devils.

40 And there came a leper to him, befeeching him, and kneeling down to him, and faying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canft make me clean.
