CHAP. I.

↑ Malachi complaineth of Ifrael's unkindness, 6 irreligion, 12 and profaneness.

THE

HE burden of the word of the LORD to
Ifrael by Malachi.

21 have loved you, faith the LORD. Yet

ye fay, Wherein hait thou loved us? Was not Efau Jacob's brother? faith the LORD: yet I loved jacob,

3 And I hated Efau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waite for the dragons of the

wilderness.

4 Whereas Fdom faith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the defolate places; thus faith the LORD of horts, They thall build, but I will throw down; and they thall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever.

5 And your eyes fhall fee, and ye thall fay, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Ifrael.

6¶A fon honoureth his father, and a fervant his matter: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? faith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that defpife my name. And ye fay, Wherein have we defpifed thy

name?

7 Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye fay, Wherein have we polluted thee n that ye fay, The table of the LORD is contemptible.

8 And if ye offer the blind for facrifice, Is it not evil! and it ye offer the lame and fick, Is it not evil? oder it now unto thy governor; will he be pleafed with thee, or accept thy perfon! faith the LORD of horts.

9 And now, I pray you, befeech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your perfons? faith the LORD of hosts.

CHAP. I.

He reproveth the priefis for megleeling their covenant, 11 and the people for idolatry, 14 adultery, 17 and infidelity.

AN now, o ye priests, this command.

ment is for you.

2 If ye will not hear, and if ye will not ley it to heart, to give glory unto my name, faith the LORD of hofts, I will even fend a curfe upon you, and I will curfe your bleflings: yea, I have curfed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.

3 Behold, I will corrupt your feed, and fpread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your folemn feafts; and one shall take you away with it.

4 And ye thall know that I have fent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, faith the LORD of hofts.

5 My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid betore my name.

6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.

7 For the priest's lips mould keep knowledge, and they should feek the law at his mouth: tor he is the metlenger of the LORD of hofts.

8 But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caufed many to tumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, faith the LORD of hofts.

9 Therefore have I alfo made you contemptible and base before all the people, ac. cording as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.

To Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

10 Who is there even among you that would fhut the doors for nought? neither do ye Judah hath dealt treacherously, and kindle fire on mine aitar for nought. I have an abomination is committed in Ifrael and no pleasure in you, faith the LORD of hosts, in Jerufalem; tor Judah hath profaned the neither will I accept an offering at your holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.

11 For trom the rifing of the fun even unto the going down of the fame, my nanie ball be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incenfe fhall be offered unto my name, and a pure onering: for my name ball be great among the heathen, faith the LORD of hosts.

12 But ye have profaned it, in that ye fay, The table of the LORD is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.

13 Ye faid alfo, Behold, what a wearinefs is it and ye have foutted at it, faith the LORD of hofts; and ye brought that which was torn, and the lame, and the fick; thus ye brought an offering: Should I accept this of your hand? faith the LORD.

14 But curfed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth and facrificeth unto the LORD a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, faith the LORD of hots, and my name is areadful among the hea.

12 The LORD will cut off the man that doeth nis, the mafter and the fcholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts.

13 And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, infomuch that he regardeth not The offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand.

14 Yet ye fay, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witnefs between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hat dealt treacherously: yet is the thy ccmpanion, and the wife of thy covenant.

15 And did not he make one! Yet had he the residue of the fpirit. And wheretore one? That he might feek a godly feed. Therefore take heed to your fpirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wite of his youth. 16 For

16 For the LORD, the God of Ifrael, faith 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your that he hateth putting away: for one covereth fakes, and he thall not destroy the fruits of violence with his garment, faith the LORD of your ground; neither fhall your vine caft. hoits: therefore take heed to your fpirit, that her fruit before the time in the field, faith ye deal not treacherously.

17 Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye fay, Wherein nave we wearied bim? When ye fay, Every one that doeth evil. is good in the fight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?

Of the mesenger, majefly, and grace of Chrift. 7 of the rebellion, 8 facrilege, 13 and infidelity of the people. 16 The promise of bleffing to them that fear Gnd.

FHOLD, I will fend my meffenger, and he fhall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye feek, thail fuddenly come to his temple, even the meffenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall -come, faith the LORD of hosts.

2 But who may abide the day of his coming and, Who fhall ftand when he appeareth? for he is like a retiner's fire, and like fuller's foap:

3 And he fall fit as a refiner and purifier of filver: and he fhall purify the fons of Levi, and purge them as gold and filver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

4 Then thall the offering of Judah and Jerufalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a fwift witness against the forcerers, and against the adulterers, and against falfe fwearers, and against thofe that opprefs the fatherless, and that ages, the widow, and and that turn afide the stranger from his right, and fear not me, faith the LORD

of hosts.

6 For 1 am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye fons of Jacob are not confumed.

Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine.ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, faith the LORD of hofts. But ye faid, Wherein shall we

return?

8 Will a man roh God? yet ye have robbed me. But ye fay, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings..

9 Ye are curfed with a curfe: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

10 Bring ve all the tithes into the ftorehoufe, that there may be meat in mine houfe, and prove me now herewith, faith the LORD of hofts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a bleifing, that there fall not be room enough to receive it.

12 And all nations fhall call you bleffed: for ye thall be a delightfome land, faith the LORD of hosts.

13 Your words have been fout againft me, faith the LORD. Yet ye fay, What have we spoken fo much against thee?

14 Ye have faid, It is vain to ferve God: and, What profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mourn. fully before the LORD of hotts?

15 And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickednefs are iet up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.

16 Then they that feared the LORD fpake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of re. membrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.

17 And they fhall be mine, faith the LORD of hofts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will fpare them, as a man spareth his own fon that ferveth him.

18 Then fhall ye return, and difcern be. tween the righteous and the wicked, between him that ferveth God and him that ferveth him not.

CHAP. IV.

God's judgment on the wicked, 2 and bis bleng on the good: 5 be telleth of Elijah's coming.

FOR, behold, the day cometh, that thall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, fhall be stubble; and the day that cometh fhall burn them up, faith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them reither root nor branch.

2 But unto you that fear my name hall the Sun of righteoufnefs arife with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the tall.

3 And ye fhall tread down the wicked; for they fhall be afhes under the foles of your feet in the day that I fhall do this, faith the LORD of hofts.

4 Remember ye the law of Mofes my fervant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Ifrael, with the itatutes and judgments.

Behold, I will fend you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dread. ful day of the LORD:

6 And he fhall. turn the heart of the fa. thers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, left I come and fmite the earth with a curfe.
