Ephraim's glory wanisbeth.

Chap. xiil, xiv. Blefings promised on repentance. 11 I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.

9 And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the folemn feast.

10 I have alfo fpoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied vifions, and used fimilitudes, by the miniftry of the prophets.

11 Is there iniquity in Gilead? Surely they are vanity they facrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.

ra And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Ifrael ferved for a wife, and for a wife he kept feep.

13 And by a prophet the LORD brought Ifrael out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preferved.

14 Ephraim provoked him to anger moft bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach thall his Lord return unto him.

1 An exhortation to repentance. 4 A prom mife of God's ng.

Waited himfelt in ifrael; but when he Ifrael, return unto the LORD thy God;

offended in Baal, he died.

2 And now they fin more and more, and have made them molten images of their filver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they fay of them, Let the men that facrifice kifs the calves.

3 Therefore they thall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that paffeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

4 Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no faviour beside me.

5 I did know thee in the wildernefs, in the land of great drought.

6 According to their pafture, fo were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.

7 Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I obferve them.

8 I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion the wild beaft fhall tear them.

90 Ifrael, thou haft destroyed thyfelf; but 4n me is thine help..

10 I will be thy king: where is any other that may fave thee in all thy cities and thy judges of whom thou saidft, Give me a king and princes?

for thou haft fallen by thire iniquity.

2 Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: fay unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: fo will we render the calves of our lips.

3 Asthur fhall not fave us; we will not ride upon horfes: neither win we fay any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.

4I will eal their backfliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.

5 I will be as the dew unto Ifrael: he thal! grow as the lily, and caft forth his roots as Lebanon.

6 His branches fhall fpread, and his beauty fhall be as the olive tree, and his fmeli as Lebanon.

7 They that dwell under his shadow fhall return; they thall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the fcent thereof ball be as the wine of Lebanon.

8 Ephraim ball fay, What have 1 to do any more with idols! I have heard him, and obferved him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.

y Who is wife, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he thall know them! for the ways of the LORD are right, and the jutt thall walk in them; but the tranfgreffors thall fall therein.

JOEL. of God's judgment. day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning fpread upon the mountains: a great people and a trong, there hath not been ever the like, neither thall be any more after it, even to the years of many enerations.

5 Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

6 For a nation is come up upon my land, ftrong, and without number, whofe teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.

7 He hath laid my vine wafte, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cait if away; the branches thereof are made white.

8 Lament like a virgin girded with fackcloth for the husband of her youth.

9 The meat offering and the drink ffering is cut off from the houfe or the LORD; the priefts, the LORD's minifters, mourn.

10 The held is waited, the land mourneth; for the corn is wafted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.

I Be ye afhamed, O ye hufbandmen; howl, O ye vinedreifers, for the wheat and for the barley; becaufe the harveft of the field is perished.

12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languitheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree alio, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: becaufe joy is withered away from the fons of

men.

13 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priefts: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in fackcloth, ye minifters of my God; for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the houfe of your God.

14 Sanctify ye a faft, call a folemn affembly, gather the elders, and all the inhabitants of the land, into the houfe of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,

15 Alas for the day, for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty thall it come.

16 Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladnefs from the houfe of our God?

17 The feed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid defolate, the barns are broken Hown; for the corn is withered.

18 How do the beafts groan; the herds of cattle are perplexed because they have no parture; yea, the flocks of theep are made defolate.

3 A fire devoureth before them; and be hind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a defolate wilderness; yea, and nothing thall escape them.

4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, to thall they ran.

5 Like the nose of chariots on the tops of mountains thall they leap, like the noife of a flame of hire that devoureth the flubble, as a ftrong people fet in battle array.

Before their face the people fhall be much pained: all races fhall gather blacknefs. 7 They fhall run like mighty men; they shail climb the wall like men of war; and they thall march every one on his ways, and they fhall not break their ranks:

8 Neither hall one thruft another; they fhall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the fword they shall not be wounded.

9 They fhall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they fhall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thiet.

10 The earth fhall quake before them; the heavens thall tremble: the fun and the moon fhall be dark, and the stars fhall withdraw their thining:

11 And the LORD fhall utter his voice be. fore his army: for his camp is very great: for be is ftrong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it!

12 Therefore alfo now, faith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fafting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

13 And rend your heart, and not your gar ments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, flow to an ger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blething behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, fanctify a fast, call a folemn affembly:

16 Gather the people, fanctify the congregation, affemble the elders, gather the chiidren, and thofe that fuck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her clefet.

17 Let the pr.etts, the minifters of the LORD, weep between the porch and the sitar, and let them lay, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen hald rule over them: wherefore should they fay, among the people, Where is their God?

18 Then will the LORD be jealous for his

land, and pity his people.

19 Yea, the LORD will aufwer and fay un. to his people, Behold, I will fend you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye thall be fatisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:

God's judgments against

the enemies of his people. 4 Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coafts of Palentine? will ye render me a recompence! and if ye recompenfe me, fwiftly and speed. ily will I return your recompence upon your own head.

Chap. ii. 20 But I will remove tar off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and defolate, with his face toward the eart fea, and his hinder part toward the utmoit fca, and his ftink thali come up, and his ili favour thall come up, because he hath done great things.

21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things.

22 Be not afraid, ye beats of the field: for the partures of the wilderness do fpring, for the tree beareth her truit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their firength.

23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the firft Benth.

24 And the floors fhall be full of wheat, and the fats hall overflow with wine and oil.

25 And I will restore to you the years that the locuft hath eaten, the carkerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which 1 fent among you.

26 And ye thall eat in plenty, and be fatisfied, and praife the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wonderously with you and my people fhall never be ashamed.

27 And ye shall know that I am in the midit of Ifrael, and that I am the LORD your God, and none elfe: and my people thall never be ashamed.

28 Asd it shall come to pafs afterward, that I will pour out my fpirit upon all fleth; and your fons and your daughters' fhall prophefy, your old men fhall dream dreams, your young men thall fee vifions:

29 And alfo upon the fervants and upon the handmaids in thofe days will I pour out my Spirit,

30 And I will fhew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

31 The fun fhall be turned into darknefs, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD

come.

31 And it fhall come to pafs, that whofoever thall call on the name of the LORD thall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerufalem fhall be deliverance, as the LORD hath faid, and in the remnant whom the Lokp

God's judgments again the enemies of bis people: 18 his ble ng upon the church. FOR, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I thall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerufalem,

2 I will alfo gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehothaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Ifrael, whom they have feattered among the nations, and parted my land.

3 And they have cat lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and fold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

5 Becaufe ye have taken my filver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleafant things:

6 The children alfo of Judah and the chil dren of Jerufalem have ye fold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from

their border.

7 Behold, I will raife them out of the place whither ye have fold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head: 8 And I will fell your fons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall fell them to the sa beans, to a people tar oft: for the LORD hath spoken it.

Proclaim me this among the Gentiles; prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:

10 Beat your plowhares into fwords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak fay, I am trong.

11 Affemble yourfelves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourfelves together round about: thither caule thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.

12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will 1 fit to judge all the heathen round about.

13 Put ye in the fickle, for the harvest is ripe: come get ye down; for the prefs is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decifion for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decifion.

15 The fun and the moon fall be darkened, and the stars fhall withdraw their ining.

16 The LORD alfo fhall rear out of Zion, and atter his voice from Jerufalem; and the heavens and the earth thall thake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the ftrength of the children of Ifrael.

17 So fhall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy moun tain: then thall Jerufalem be holy, and there fhall no strangers pafs through her any

18 And it fhall conie to pass in that day, that the mountains fhall drop down new wine, and the hills fhall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah thall flow with waters,

and a fountain fhall come forth of the house of the LORD, and thall water the valley of Shittim.

19 Egypt fhall be a defolation, and Edom fhall be a defolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have ihed innocent b'ood in their land.

20 But Judah thall dwell for ever, and Je. rufalem from generation to generation.

CHAP. I.

AMO

1 God's judgments upon Syria, 6 upon the Philiftines, upon Tyrus, 11 upon Edom, 13

upon Ammon.

THE words of Amos, who was among the

herdmen of Tekoa, which he faw concerning Ifrael in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the ton of Joash king Ifrael, two years before the earthquake.

2 And he faid, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerufalem; and the habitations of the shepherds fhall mourn, and the top of Carmel thall wither.

3 Thus faith the LORD; For three tranf. gretions of Damafcus, and for four, I will not urn away the punishment thereof: because they have threed Gilead with threshing inruments of iron:

4 But I will fend a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces of

Ben-hadad.

51 will break alfo the bar of Damafcus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the fceptre from the honfe of Eden: and the people of Syria fhall go into captivity unto Kir, faith the LORD.

6 This faith the LORD; For three tranf. greifions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof: because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:

7 But I will fend a fire on the wall of Gaza, which thall devour the palaces thereof:

8 And 1 will cut off the inhabitant from Afhdod, and him that holdeth the fceptre from Afhkelon, and I will turn mine hand againit Ekron: and the remnant of the Philifines thall perish, faith the Lord GOD.

9 Thus faith the LORD; For three tranf. greffions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof: because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly co

venant :

10 But I will fend a fire on the wall of Ty. rus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.

11 Thus faith the LORD; For three tranfgreifions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did purfue his brother with the fword, and did caft off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and kept nis wrath for ever:

12 But i will fend a fire upon Teman, which hall devour the palaces of Bozrah.

13 Thus faith the LORD; For three tranf. greitions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof: because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:

4 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it fhall devour the palaces thereof, with fhouting in the day of battle, with a tempeft in the day of the whirlwind:

15 And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together, faith the LORD.

CHA P. II.

1 God's wrath against Moab, 4 upon Judah, 6 and upon Ifrael. 9 God complaineth of their unthankfulness.

THUS faith the LORD; For three tranf.

greffions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.

2 But I will fend a fire upon Moab, and it fhall devour the palaces of Kirioth: and Moab fhall die with tumult, with fhouting, and with the found of the trumpet:

3 And I will cut off the judge from the midt thereof, and will flay all the princes thereof with him, faith the LORD.

4 Thus faith the LORD; For three tranf. greffions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have defpifed the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caufed them to err, after the which their fathers have walked :

5 But I will fend a fire upon Judah, and it fhall devour the palaces of jerufalem.

6 Thus faith the LORD; For three tranfgreflions of Ifrael, and for four, I will not tara away the punifoment thereof: because they fold the righteous for filver, and the poor for a pair of thoes;

7 That pant after the duft of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn afide the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the fame maid, to profane my holy name:

8 And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the houfe of their god.

9 Yet deftroyed I the Amorite before them, whofe height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath..

10 Alfo I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to poffefs the land of the Amorite.

11 And I raifed up of your fons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Ifrael I faith the LORD.

12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, faying, Prophefy not.

13 Behold, I am preffed under you, as a cart is preffed that is full of theaves.

14 Therefore the flight fhall perish from the fwift, and the strong shall not ftrengthen his force, neither fhall the mighty deliver himself.

15 Neither thall he ftand that handleth the bow, and be that is fwift of foot shall not deliver bimfelf: neither thall he that rideth the horfe deliver himself.
