Chap. vil. king, That Daniel, which is of the children 13 Then anfwered they and faid before the 14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was fore difpleafed with himfelf, and fet bis heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he laboured ull the going down of the fun to deliver him. 15 Then thefe men affembled unto the king, and faid unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Perfians is, That no decree nor ftatute which the king establisheth may be changed. 1 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cat him into the den of lions. Note the king spake and faid unto Peniel, Thy God whom thou ferveft continually, he will deliver thee 17 And a fo e was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king fealed it with his own fignet, and with the fignet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel. 18 Then the king went to his palace, and pafe the night farting: neither were inftruments of music brought before him: and his Deep went from him. 19 Then the king arofe very early in the morning, and went in hafte unto the den of lions. 20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel; and the king fpake and faid to Daniel, O Daniel, fervant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou fervent continually, able to deliver thee from the lions? 21 Then faid Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever. 22 My God hath fent his angel, and hath fhut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forafmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and alfo before thee, O king, have I done no hurt. 23 Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. 24 And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accufed Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mattery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den. 25 Then king Darius wrote unto all peo ple, nations and Fanguages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. 26 1 make a decree, That in every domi nion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and itedfait for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. 27 He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh figns and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions. 1 Daniel's vision of the four beafts, 9 of God's 2 Daniel spake and faid, I faw in my vifion by night, and, beheld, the four winds of the heaven ftrove upon the great fea. 3 And four great beafs came up from the fea, diverse one from another. 4 The firit was like a lion, and had eagle's wings; I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it. 5 And behold, another beat, a fecond, like to a bear, and it raifed up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it be tween the teeth of it: and they faid thus unto it, Arife, devour much flesh. 6 After this I beheld, and, lo, another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a towl; the beat had alfo four heads; and uominion was given to it. 7 After this 1 faw in the night vions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and frong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth; it devoured and brake in pieces, and ftamped the re due with the feet of it: and it was diverfe from all the beans that were defore it; and it had ten horns. 3.1 confidered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the firm horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth fpeaking great things. 9 beheld till the thrones were caft down, and the Ancient of Days did fit, whofe gar. ment was white as fnow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. io fiery ftream iffued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands minitered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thoufand food before him: the judgment was fet, and the books were opened. III beheld then becaufe of the voice of the great words which the horn fpake: 1 beheld, even till the beatt was flain, and his body deftroyed, and given to the burning flame. 12 As concerning the rest of the beafts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a feafon and time. 13 I faw in the night vifions, and behold, one like the Son of man ca e with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought him near before him. 14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, thould ferve him his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which thall not pafs away, and his kingdom that which thall not be destroyed. 15 Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midit of my body, and the vifious of my head troubled me. 16 I came near unto one of them that food by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. 17 Thefe great beats which are four, are four kings, which thall arife out of the earth. 18 But the faints of the Moft High fhall take the kingdom, and poffefs the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. 19 Then I would know the truth of the fourth beaft, which was diverfe from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whofe teeth were of iron, and his nails of braís; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the refidue with his feet; 20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and betore whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that fpake very great things, whofe look was more tout than his fellows. 21 1 beheld, and the fame horn made war with the faints, and prevailed against them; 22ntil the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given to the faints of the Moft High; and the time came that the faints poffelfed the kingdom. 23 Thus he faid, The fourth beaft fhall be the fourth kingdom upon carth, which thall be diverse from all kingdoms, and thall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in preces. 24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arife: and another thall rife after them; and he fhall be di verfe from the firit, and he thall fubdue three kings. 25 And he thall peak great words againft the Moft High, and fhall wear out the faints of the Moft High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. 26 But the judgment fhall fit, and they shall take away his dominion, to confume and to destroy it unto the end. 27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, thall be given to the people of the faints of the Most High, whofe kingdon is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions thall ferve and obey him." 28 Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart. CHAP. VII. 1 Daniel's vifion of the ram and he-goat. 13 The two thousand three hundred days of facrifice. IN the third year of the reign of king Belfhazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. 2 And 1 faw in a vifion; and it came to pars, when I faw, that I was at Shuthan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I faw in a vifion, and I was by the river of Ulai. 3 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and faw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had to horns; and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up lant. 41 faw the ram puthing weftward, and northward, and fouthward; fo that no beafts might ftand before him, neither was there Of the ram and he-goat. any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great 5 And as I was confidering, behold, an he geat came from the weft on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat bad a notable horn between his eyes. 6 And he came to the ram that had we horns, which I had feen ftanding before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power. 7 And I faw him come clofe unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and fmote the ram, and brake his two hornst and there was no power in the ram to fland before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and ftamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the rain out of his hand. 8 Therefore the he-goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven. y And out of one of then came forth a little hora, which waxed exceeding great, toward the fouth, and toward the caft, and toward the pleasant land. 10 And it waxed great, even to the hot of heaven; and it caff down fome of the hoft and of the itars to the ground, and stamped upon them. 11 Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the hoft, and by him the daily fa crifice was taken away, and the place of his fa ctuary was caft down. 12 And an hott was given him against the daily facrifice by reason of tranfgrenon, and it caft down the truth to the ground; and it practifed, and profpered. 13 Then I heard one faint fpeaking, and another faint faid unto that certain faint which fpake, How long fall be the vifion concerning the daily facrifice, and the tranf gretion of defolation to give both the fanc tuary and the hoft to be trodden under foot F 14 And he faid unto me, Unto two thou fand and three hundred days; then fhall the fanctuary be cleanfed. 15 And it came to país, when 1, event Daniel, had feen the vifion, and fought for the meaning, then, behold, there flood before me as the appearance of a man. And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and faid, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vi.. fion. 17 So he came near where I flood: and when he came I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he faid unto me, Understand, or for of man: for at the time of the end fali be the vision. 18 Now as he was fpeaking with me, I was in a deep fleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and fet me upright. 19. And he faid, Behold, I will make thee know what thall be in the last end of the in dignation: for at the time appointed the end ball be. 20 The ram which thou faweft having two horns, are the kings of Media and Peris. 21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the firit king. 22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms thall hand. Daniel's confeffion, and Chap. ix. up out of the nation, but not in his power. 23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the tranfgreffors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and undertanding dark fentences, fhall ftand up. 24 And his power fhall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he hall deftroy wonderfully, and shall profper, and practife, and thall destroy the mighty and the holy people. 25 And through his policy alfo he fall caufe craft to profper in his hand; and he thall magnify bimfelf in his heart, and by peace hall deftroy many he shall alfo stand up against the Prince of princes; but he fhall be broken without hand. 26 And the vifion of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vifion; for it fall be for many days. 27 And I Daniel fainted, and was fick certain days; afterward I rofe up, and did the king's bulinets; and I was altonithed at the vifion, but none understood it. CHAP. IX. 3 Daniel confefeth his pus, 16 prayeth for the refloration of ferufalem: 26 Gabriel informeth him of the feventy weeks, &c. N the first year of Darius the fon of Ahafuerus, of the feed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans; 2 In the first year of his reign, I Daniel undertood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish feventy years in the defolations of Jerufalem. 3 And I fet my face unto the Lord God, to feek by prayer and fupplications, with fafting, and fackcloth, and athes: 4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my coufethion, and faid, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his command. ments; 5 We have finned, and have committed Iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts, and from thy judgments: 6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy fervants the prophets, which ipake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. 7 O Lord, righteoufnefs belongeth unto thee, but unto us confufion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the Inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Ifrael, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trefpafs that they have trefpailed against thee. 80 Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have tinned against thee. 9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveneifes, though we have rebelled against him; 10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he fet before us by his fervants the prophets. 1 Yea, all Ifrael have tranfgreffed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curte is poured upon prayer for Jerufalem. us, and the oath that is written in the law of Mofes the fervant of God, because we have finned againit him. 12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he fpake againit us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerufalem. 13 As it it written in the law of Mofes, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and underftand thy truth. 14 Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth : for we obeyed not his voice. 15 And now, O Lord our God, that haft brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and haft gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have linned, we have done wickedly. 160 Lord, according to all thy righ teoufnefs, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jeru falem, thy holy mountain: because for our fins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerufalem and thy people are become proach to all that are about us. re 17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy fervant, and his fupplications, and caufe thy face to fhine upon thy fan&tuary that is defolate, for the Lord's fake. 18 0 my God, incline thine er, and hear; reo thine eyes, and behold our defolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not prefent our fupplications before thee for our righteoufneffes, but for thy great mercies. 19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken, and do; defer not, for thine own fake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name. 20 And whiles I was fpeaking, and pray. ing, and confetfing my fin, and the fin of my people Ifrael, and prefenting my fupplication before the LORD my God for the holy moun tain of my God; 21 Yea, while I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had feen in the vifion at the beginning, being caufed to fly fwiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. 22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and faid, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee ikill and understanding. 23 At the beginning of thy fupplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to thew bee; for thou art greatly be loved: therefore understand the matter, and confider the vision. 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, to finish the tranfgreffion, and to make an end of fins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteoufnefs, and to feal up the vifion and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy, 25 Know therefore and understand, that. from the going forth of the commandment to reitore and to build Jerufalem unto the Meffiah the Prince jhall be feven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be Daniels vifion. DANIEL. built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threefcore and two weeks fhall Merliah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that fall come thall deftroy the city and the fanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a tood, and unto the end of the war defolations are deter mined. 27 And he fhall confirm the covehart with many for one week and in the midit of the week he thali caufe the facrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overfpreading of abominations he shall make it defolate, even until the confummation, and that determined fhail be poured upon the defolate. CHAP. X. 1 Daniel, having humbled himself, feeth a vijon: 10 being troubled with fear, he is comforted by an angel. IN N the third year of Cyrus king of Perfia, a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whofe name was called Beltcihazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had underfanding of the vision. 2 In thofe days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. 3 I ate no pleafant bread, neither came flesh por wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint my elf at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. 4 And in the four and twentieth day of the fift month, as I was by the tide of the great river, which is Hid lekel; 5 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold a certain man clothed in linen, The overthrow of Perfia. 14 Now I am come to make thee understand what thall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vifion is for many days. 15 And when he had spoken fuch words unto me, I fet my face toward the ground, and I became dumb. 16 And, behold, one like the fimilitude of the fons of men touched my tips: then I opened my mouth, and (paké, and faid unto him that food before me, O niy lord, by the vision my forrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. 17 For how can the fervant of this my lord talk with this my lord? For as for me, straightway there remained no ffrength in me, neither is there breath left in me. 18 Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, 19 And faid, O man greatly beloved, feat not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be frong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was ftrengthened, and taid, Let my lord fpeak; for thou haft ftrengthened me. 20 Then faid he, Knoweit thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to tight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia thall come. 21 But I will fhew thee that which is noted in the fcripture of trath: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince. CHAP. XI. 1 The overthrow of Persia by the king of Grecia. s Kings of the north and fauth. 3o The invajon and tyranny of the Romans." whole loins were girded with fine gold of ALSO 1 in the firt year of Darius the Mede, Uphaz: 6 His body alfo was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polithed brafs, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. 7 And I Daniel alone faw the vifion: for the men that were with me faw not the vision; but a great quaking tell upon them, fo that they fled to hide themselves. 8 Therefore I was left alone, and faw this great vifion, and there remained no ftrength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. 9 Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground, 10 And, behold, an hand touched me, which fet me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands, 11 And he faid unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I Ipeak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now fent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling. 12 Then faid he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didit fet thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I an come for thy words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Perfia with tood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings even I, flood to confirm and to strength. en him. 2 And now will I hew thee the truth. Behold, there that ftand up yet three kings in Perfia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all and by his strength through his riches he thall itir up all against the realm of Grecia. 3 And a mighty king fhall ftand up, that fali rule with great dominion, and do ac cording to his will. 4 And when he fhall fland up, his kingdom fhall be broken, and thall be divided reward the tour winds of heaven; and not to his po terity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled for his kingdom fhall be plucked up, even for others bende those. 5 And the king of the fouth thall be frong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion fall be a great de minion. 6 And in the end of years they thall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the fouth thall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but the shall not retain the power of the arm: neither fhall be ftand, nor his arm: but the fhali be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times. 7 But out of a branch of her roots shall one ftand up in his eftate, which shall come with an army, and fhail enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and thall deal against them, and shall prevail : 8 And thall alfo carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious. Leagues and conflicts between Chap. xl. precious veffels of filver and of gold; and he hall continue more years than the king of the north. 9 So the king of the fouth fhall come into bis kingdom, and fhall return into his own land. 10 But his fons shall be stirred up, and fhall affemble a multitude of great forces: and one thall certainly come, and overflow, and pafs through then thall he return, and be ftirred up, even to his fortress. 11 And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and thall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he thall fet forth a great multitude; but the multitude thall be given into his hand. 12 And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart fhall be lifted up; and he fhall caft down many ten thousands: but he thall not be ftrengthened by it. 13 For the king of the north fhall return, and shall fet forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches. 14 And in thofe times there fhall many ftand up against the king of the fouth: alfo the robbers of thy people thall exalt themselves to establish the vifion; but they shall fall. 15 So the king of the north shall come, and cait up a mount, and take the most fenced cities; and the arms of the fouth fhall not withftand, neither his chofen people, neither ball there be any ftrength to withhand. 16 But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none fhall stand before him: and he thall ftand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be coníumed. 17 He shall alfo fet his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus fhall he do: and he fhall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but the shall not ftand on his fde, neither be for him. 18 After this fhall he turn his face unto the ifies, and fhall take many: but a prince for his own behalf thali caufe the reproach offered by him to ceafe; without his own reproach he fhall caufe it to turn upon him. 19 Then he thall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall ftumble and fall, and not be found. 20 Then thall ftand up in his eftate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle. 21 And in his eftate shall ftand up a vile perfon, to whom they thall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he thall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. 22 And with the arms of a flood fhall they be overflown from before him, and fhall be broken; yea, alfo the prince of the covenant. 23 And after the league made with him he fhall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and fhall become ftrong with a fmall people. 24 He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he thall do that which his fathers have not done; nor, his fathers' fathers; he shall fcatter among them the prey, and poil, and riches: yea, and he thall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time. the kings of the north and fouth. 25 And he shall ftir up his power and his courage against the king of the fouth with a great army; and the king of the fouth fhall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he thall not ftand: for they thall forecast devices against him. 25 Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army thall overflow: and many thall fall down flain. 27 And both thefe kings hearts shall be to do mifchief, and they shall fpeak lies at one table; but it thall not profper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed. 28 Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he thali do exploits, and return to his own land. 29 At the time appointed he shall return and come toward the fouth; but it shall aot be as the former, or as the latter. 30 For the hips of Chittim fhall come against him: therefore he fhail be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: fo thall he do; he thall even return, and have intelligence with them that forfake the holy covenant. 31 And arms fhall stand on his part, and they thall pollute the fanctuary of ftrength, and thail take away the daily facrifice, and they fhall place the abomination that maketh defolate. 32 And fuch as do wickedly against the covenant fhall he corrupt by Batteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. 33 And they that understand among the people fhall inffruct many yet they thall fall by the fword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. 34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many thall cleave to them with flatteries. 35 And fome of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. 36 And the king fhall do according to his will; and he fhall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and fhall profper till the indignation be ac complished: for that that is determined thail be done. 37 Neither fhall he regard the god of his fathers, nor the defire of women, nor regard any god: for he fhall magnify himself above all. 38 But in his eftate fhall he honour the God of forces; and a god whom his fathers knew not fhall he honour with gold, and filver, and with precious fiones, and pleafant things. 39 Thus fhall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he fhall acknow. ledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain. 40 And at the time of the end fhall the king of the fouth pufh at him: and the king of the north fhall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horfe men, and with many fhips; and he fhall enter into the countries, and thall overflow and pafs over. 41 He shall enter alfo into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown but |
