II And it came to pafs, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerufalem for fear of Pharaoh's army, 12 Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jeru falem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people. 13 And when he was in the gate of Ben. jamin, a captain of the ward was there, whofe name was Irijah, the son of Shelemi. ah, the fon of Hananiah; and he took Jeremíah the prophet, faying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans. 14 Then faid Jeremiah, It is falfe; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: fo Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes. 15 Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremian, and fmote him, and put him to prifon in the houfe of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prifon. 16 When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days; 17 Then Zedekiah the king tent, and took bim out: and the king asked him fecretly in his houfe, and faid, Is there any word from the LORD! And Jeremiah faid, There is: for, faid he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. 18 Moreover Jeremiah faid unto king Ze dekiah, What have I ofended against thee, or against thy fervants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prifon? 19 Where are now your prophets which prophefied unto you, faying, The king of Babylon fhall not come against you, nor against this land? 20 Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my fupplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou caufe me not to return to the house of Jonathan the fcribe, left I die there. 21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prifon, and that they fhould give him daily a piece of bread out of the baker's treet, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prifon. CHA P. XXXVIII. Feremiah is put into the dungeon. 7 Ebedmelech getteth him fome enlargement: 14 his counjel to the king. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: fo Jeremiah funk in the mire. 7 Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then fifting in the gate of Benjamin; 8 Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's houfe, and fpake to the king, faying, 9 My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have caft into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city. 10 Then the king commanded Fbed-melech the Ethiopian, faying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die. 11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treafury, and took thence pld caft clouts, and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah. 12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian faid unto Jeremiah. If it feem good unto thee to com with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well unto thee; but if it feem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, torbear: behold, all the land is before thee: whither it feemeth good and convenient for thee to go, thither go. s Now while he was not yet gont back, be faid, Go back alfo to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the fon of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go wherefoever it feemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a reward, and let him go. 6 Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam to Mizpah; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land. 7 Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon; 8 Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the fon of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the fons of Kareah, and Seraiah the fon of Tanhumeth, and the fons of Ephai the Netophathite, and jezanlah the fon of a Maachathite, they and their men. 9 And Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam the fon of Shaphan fware unto them and to their men, faying, Fear not to ferve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and ferve the king of Babylon, and it fhall be well with you. 10 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to ferve the Chaldeans which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine, and fummer fruits, and oil, and put them in your veffels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken. 11 Likewife when ail the Jews that were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had lett a remnant of Judah, and that he had fet over them Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam the fon of Shaphan; 12 Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they wess friven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and fummer fruits very much. 13 Moreover Johanan the fon of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the folds, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, 14 And fail unto him, Doft thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammoniteshath fent Ishmael the fon of Nethaniah to flay thee? But Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam believed them not. 15 Then Johanan the fon of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah fecretly, faying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will flay Immacl the fon of Nethaniah, and no man fhall know it: wherefore fhould he lay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee fhould be fcattered, and the rem nant of Judah perish ? 16 But Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam faid unto Johanan the fon of Kareah, Thou fhalt not do this thing: for thou fpeakert falfely of Ifmael. NOW it came to pafs in the feventh month, that Ishmael the fon of Nethaniah' the fon of Elifhama, of the feed royal, and the princes of the king, even ten men with am, came unto Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam to Mizpah; and there they did eat bread together in Mizpah. 2 Then arofe thmael the fon of Nethani ab, and the ten men that were with him, and fmote Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam the fon of Shaphan with the fword, and flew him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land. 3 Ishmael alfo flew all the Jews that were with him, even with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there, and the men of war. 4. And it came to pafs, the fecond day after he had flain Gedaliah, and no man knew it, 5 That there came certain from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even fourfcore men, having their beards thaven, and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves, with oderings and incenfe in their hand, to bring them to the houfe of the LORD. 6 And Ithinael the fon of Nethaniah went forth from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went and it came to pafs, as he met them, he faid unto them, Come to Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam. 7. And it was fo, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael the fon of Nethaniah flew them, and caft them into the midft of the pit, he, and the men that were with him. 8 But ten men were found among them, that faid unto thmael, Slay us not; for we have treafures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he forbare, and flew them not among their brethren. 9 Now the pit wherein Ishmael had caft all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had dain because of Gedaliah, was it which Afa the king had made for fear of Baafha king of Ifrael: and 1hmael the fon of Nethaniah filled it with them that were flain. 10 Then Ihmael carried away captive all the refidue of the people that were in Miz pah, even the king's daughters, and all the people that remained in Mizpah, whom Ne buzaradan the camisin of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam: and Ishmael the fon of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the Ammonites. But when Johanan the fon of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, heard of all the evil that Ithmael the fon of Nethaniah had done, 12 Then they took all the men, and went to fight with ithmael the fon of Nethaniah, and found him by the great waters that are in Gibeon. 13 Now it came to pafs, that, when all the people which were with Ishmael faw Johanan the fon of Kareah, and all the cap. vains of the forces that were with him, then they were glad. 14 So all the people that Ifhmael had carried away captive from Mizpah cat about and returned, and went unto Johanan the ion of Kareah. and all the captains of the forces that were 16 Then took Johanan the fon of Kareah, with him, all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the fon or Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after that he had flain Gedaliah the fon of Ahikam, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom even mighty men of war, and the womer, he had brought again from Gibeon: habitation of Chimham, which is by Beth. 17 And they departed, and dwelt in the lehem, to go to enter into Egypt, were afraid of them, because Ishmael the 1 Jobanan defreth Feremiah to enquire of Let, we beseech thee, our fupplication be way wherein we may walk, and the thing them, I have heard you; beheld, will pray 4 Then Jeremiah the prophet faid unto unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it thall come to pafs, that what foever thing the LORD thall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you. be a true and faithful witnefs between us, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah. and all the captains of the forces which were the God of Ifrael, unto whom ye sent me to will I build you, and not pull you down, and whom ye are afraid; De not afraid of him, he may have mercy upon you, and cause you Feremiad carried into Egypt.
