A ND it came to pais at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed; and behol 1, he stood by the river. 2 And behold, there came upout of the river even well-tavoured kine, and fat-fleshed: and hey ed in a meadow. 3 And, behold, even other kine came up after them out of the river, ill-avoured and lean ficted; and flood by the other kine, upon the brink of the river. 4 And the ill-favoured and lean-tlehed kine did eat up the feven well-tavoured and fatkine. So Pharaoh awoke. 5 And he slept, and dreamed the fecond time: and, behold, even ears of corn came up upon one italk, rank and good. 6 Ani, benoid, :even thin ears, and blasted with the east wind, fprung up after them. 7 And the feven thin ears devoured the feven rank and tull ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. 8 And it came to pafs in the morning, that his spirit was troubled; and he fent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wife n.en thereof; and Pharaoh told them his dream: but there was none that could interpre: them unto Pharaoh. 9 Then fpake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, faying, I do remember my faults this day. io Pharaoh was wroth with his fervants, and pur me in the ward in the captain of the guard's house, both me and the chief baker. 11 And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he: we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. 12 And there was there with us a young man, an Hebrew, fervant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams: to each man according to his dream he did interpret. 13 And it came to país, as he interpreted to us, fo it was: me he reitored unto mine office, and him he hanged. 14¶ Then Pharaoh fent and called Jofeph, and they brought him haftily out of the dungeon: and he haved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh. 15 And Pharaoh faid unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard lay of thee, but thou canst understand a dream to interpret it. 16 And Jofeph answered Pharaoh, faying, It is not in me: God fhall give Pharaoh an anfwer of pe..ce. 17 And Pharaoh' faid unto Jofeph, In my dream, behold, I flood upon the bank of the river. 18 And, behold, there came up out of the river feven kine, fat-fleshed, and well-favoured; and they red in a meadow. 19 And, behold, feven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill-favoured, and lean-nethed, fuch as I never fawin all the land of Egypt or badnefs. 20 And the lean and ill-favoured kine did eat up the firit feven tat kine. 21 And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were ill ill-favoured, as at the Joning. So I awoke, interpreted by Fofeph. 22 And I faw in my dream, and, behold, fe. ven ears came up in one stalk, sull and good. 23 And, behold, feven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, fprung up after them. 24 And the thin ears devoured the feven 25 And Jofeph faid unto Pharaoh, The 27 And the feven thin and ill-favoured kine famine. 29 Behold, there come feven years of great 30 And there shall arile atter them feven years of famine; and all the plenty thall be forgotten in the land of Egypt: and the famine ball confume the land. 31 And the plenty fhall not be known in the land, by reafon of that famine following; for it all he very grievous. 32 And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice: it is because the thing is estab lithed by God, and God will shortly bring it to pafs. 33 Now therefore, let Pharaoh look out a man difcreet, and wife, and fet him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the feven plentcousyears. 35 And let them gather all the food of thofe good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. 36 And that food shall be for flore to the land, against the feven years of famine which fhall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perith not through the famine. 37 And the thing was good in the eyes of 38And Pharaoh faid unto his fervants, Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his fervants. Can we find fuch a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? 39 And Pharaoh faid unto Jofeph, Forafmuch as God hath thewed thee all this, there is none fo difcreet and wife as thou art: 40 Choufhalt be over my houfe, and according unto thy word thall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. 41 And Pharaoh faid unto Jofeph, See, I have fet thee over all the land of Egypt. 42 And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Jofeph's hand, and ar rayed him in vettures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck. 43 And he made him to ride in the fecond him, Eow the knee: and he made him ruler chariot which he had; and they cried before over all the land of Egypt. 44 And Pharaol. faid unto Jofeph, I am Pharaoh, 2nd without thee fhall no man lift UR 1 Jofeph's breibren Chap zili. his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. 45 And Pharaoh called Jofeph's name Zahnath-paancah; and he gave him to wie Afenath, the daughter of Poti-pherah pe of On: and Jofeph west out over all Ce land of Egypt. 4 And Jofeph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt.) And Jofeph went out from the prefence of Pharach, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. 41 And in the feven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls. 48 And he gathered u, all the food of the feven years, which were.n the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the held, which was round about every city, laid he up in the faine. 49 And Joseph gathered corn as the fand of the fea, very much, until he left numbering: for it was without number. 55 And unto Jofeph were born two fons be fore they earsof famine came; which Afenath, the daughter of Poti-pherah prieft of On, bare to him. 51 And Jofeph called the name of the firstborn Manaffeh: for God, faid he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house. s: And the name of the fecond called he Ephraim: for God hath caufed me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. 53 And the feven years of plenteouf nels that was in the land of Egypt were ended. 54 And the feven years of dearth began to come, according as jofeph had faid: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 35 And, when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread and Pharaoh faid unto all the Egyp tians,Gounto Joseph; what he faith to you, do. 55 And the tamine was over all the face of the earth. And Jofeph opened all the florehouses, and fold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed fore in the land of Egypt. $7 And all countries came into Egypt to Jofeph for to buy corn, because that the famine was fo fore in all lands. CHA P. XLI. * Facch fendeth bis ten fans to buy corn in Egypt: 17 they are imprisoned by Jofeph Fripies. N O when Jacob faw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob faid unto his fons, Why do ye look one upon another? 2 And he tail, Behold, I nave heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die. 3 And Tofeph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt. 4 But Benjamin, fofeph's brother, Jacob fent not with his brethren: for he faid, Left pera iven ure mifeniet betal him. If ye be true men, let one of your bre thren be bound in the house of your prifon: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses: zo But bring your youngest brother unto me; fo thall your words be verified, and ye fhall not die. And they did fo. 21 And they faid one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that » we faw the anguth of his foul, when he be-fought us, and we would not hear; therefore < is this diftrefs come upon us. 22 And Reuben answered them, faying, Spake I not unto you, faying, Do not fas against the child and ye would not hear. therefore, behold, alfo his blood is required. 23 And they knew not that Joseph underflood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter. 24 And he turned himself about from them. and wept; and returned to them again, and : communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes. 25 Then Jofeph commanded to fill their facks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his fack, and to give them pro. vifion for the way: and thus did he unto them.. 26 And they landed their alfes with the corn, and departed thence. 27 And as one of them opened his fack, to give his als provender in the inn, he efpted his money: for, behold, it was in his fack's mouth. 28 And he faid unto his brethren, My mo- ney is restored; and lo, it is even in my fack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, faying one to another What is th tha: God hath done unto us? 29 And they came unto Tacob then ra-ther, unto the land of Canaan, an told him. 7-And jofeph (aw his brethren, and he.all that belel unto thema, faying B.G 20 7hh Jacob with difficulty perfuaded GENESIS. 30 The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for fpies of the country. 31 And we faid unto him, We are true men; we are no spies. 32 We be twelve brethren, fons of cur father: one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan. 33 And the man, the lord of the country, faid unto us, Hereby fhall I know that ye are truc men: leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famiae of your houtholds, and be gone; 34 And bring your youngest brother unto me; then shall I know that ye are no fpies, but that ye are true men: fo will I deliver you your brother, and ye thall tramck in the land. 35 And it came to país, as they emptied their lacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his fack: and when both they and their ather faw the bundles of money, they were afraid. 36 And Jacob their father faid unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Jofeph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away. All these things are againit me. 37 And Reuben (pake unto his father, faying, Slay my two fons if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again. 38 And he faid, My son fhall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is lett alone: it mitchief betall him by the way in the which ye go, then thall ye bring dewa my gray hairs with forrow to the grave. CHAP. XLIII. Jacob is hardly perfuaded to fend Benjamin. Tofeph entertaineth his brethren. AND the famine suas fore in the land. 2. And it came to pafs, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their fatherfaid unto them, Go again, buy us a little food. 3 And Indah pake unto him, faying, The man diri folemnly proteft unto us, faying, Ye hall not fee my face, except your brother be with you. 4 If thou wilt fend our brother with us, we Will go down and buy thee food; 5 But if thou wilt not fend him, we will not go down: for the man faid unto us, Ye ball not fee my face, except your brother be with you. 6 And Ifrael faid, Wherefore dealt ye fo ill with ine, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother? 7 And they faid, The man afked us ftraitly of our state, and of our kindred, faying, is your father yet alive? have ye another bro. ther? And we told him according to the tenor of these words. Could we certainly know that he would fay, Bring your brother down! 8 And Judah faid unto Ifrael his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arife and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and alfo our little ones. 9 I will be furety for him; of my hand halt thou require him: it I bring him not unto thee, and fet him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever. 10 For except we had lingered, furely now we had returned this second time. to fend Benjamin into Egypt. 11 And their father Ifrael faid unto them, If it must be so now, do this; Take of the bea fruits in the land in your veffels, and carry down the man a prefent, a little balm, and a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts and almonds. 12 And take double money in your hand: and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your facks carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an overnight. 13 Take alfo your brother, and arife, go again unto the man: 14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may end away your other brother, and Benjamin. It I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved. 15 And the men took that prefent, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rofe up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Jofeph. 16 And when Jofeph faw Benjamin with them, he faid to the ruler of his houfe, Bring thefe men home, and tiay, and make ready: for thefe men fhall dine with me at noon. 17 And the man did as Jofeph bade: and the man brought the men into Jofeph's house. 18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Jofeph's house; and they faid, Because of the money that was returned in our facks at the first time are we brought in, that he may feek occafion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our aires. 19 And they came near to the fteward of Jofeph's houfe, and they communed with him at the door or the house, 20 And faid, O fir! we came indeed down at the first time to buy food: 21 And it came to pafs, when we came to the inn, that we opened ourfacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his fack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it again in our hand. 22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our facks. 23 And he faid, Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your tather, hath given you treafure in your facks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them. 24 And the man brought the men into Jo feph's houfe, and gave them water, and they wathed their feet; and he gave their affes provender. 25 And they made ready the prefent agains Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they thould eat bread there. 26 And when Jofeph came home, they brought him the prefent which was in their and into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth. 27 And he asked them of their welfare, and faid, Is your father well? the old man of whom ye fpake, is he yet alive! 28 And they anfwered, Thy fervant out father is in good health, he is yet alive: and they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance. 29 And he lifted up his eyes, and faw his brother Benjamin, his mother's fon, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye fpake unto me? And he faid, God be gracious unto thee, my fon. 30 And Jofeph made hæfte; for his bowels Chap. xliv, alv. did yearn upon his brother: and he fought where to weep; and he entered into bis damber, and wept there. 37 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himfelf, and faid, Set on bread. 31 And they fet on for him by himself, and them by them felves, and for the Egyptians which did eat with him by thenfelves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. 33 And they fat before him, the firft-born according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another. 34 And he took and fent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mefs was five times fo much as any of their's. And they drank, and were merry with him. CHAP. XLIV. to pay bis brethreny 17 And he faid, God forbid that I should do fo: but the man in whofe hand the cup is found, he shall be my fervant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father 18 Then Judah came near unto him, 2nd faid, Oh, my Lord, let thy servant, I pray tuce, fpeak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy fervant: for thou art even as Pharaoh. 19 My lordaiked his fervants, faying, Have ye a father, or a brother? 20 And we faid unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one: and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him. 21 And thou faidft unto thy fervants, Bring him down unto me, that I may fet mine eyes upon him. 22 And we faid unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave Fofeph's policy to flay his brethren. houfe, faying, Fill the men's facks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his fack's mouth. And put my cup, the filver cup, in the fack's mouth of the youngest, and his cornmoney. And he did according to the word that joseph had spoken. As foon as the morning was light, the men were fent away, they and their ailes. 4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet tar off, Jofeph faid unto his reward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou don overtake them, fay unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good! Sis not this if in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? Ye have done evil in fe doing. 6 And he overtook them, and he fpake unto them thefe fame words. 7 And they faid unto him, Wherefore faith mydord there words? God forbid that thy fervants should do according to this thing. 8 Fehold, the money which we found in our facks' mouths we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we feal out of thy lord's home filver or gold? 9 With whomfoever of thy fervants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lond's bondmen. To And he said, Now alfo let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found thall be my fervant; and ye shall be blameless. 11 Then they speedily took down every man his fack to the ground, and opened every man his fack. 12 And he fearched, and began at the eldeft, and left at the youngeft; and the cup was found in Benjamin's lack. 13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his afs, and returned to the city. 14 And Judah and his brethren came to Jofeph's houfe, (for he was yet there ;) and they tell before him on the ground. 15 And Jofeph faid unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? Wot ye not that fuch a man as I can certainly divine? 16 And Judah faid, What hall we fay unto my lord what thall we speak or how thall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy fervants: behold, we are my lord's fervants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is inunda. 23 And thou faidft unto thy fervants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall fee my face no more. 24 And it came to país, when we came up unto thy fervant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25 And our father faid, Go again, and buy us a little food. 26 And we faid, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down; for we may not fee the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us. 27 And thy fervant my father faid unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two fons. 28 And the one went out from me, and I faid, Surely he is torn in pieces; and 1 faw him not fince. 29 And if ye take this alfo from me, and mifchief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with forrow to the grave. 30 Now therefore, when I come to thy fer want my father, and the lad be not with us; (feeing that his life is bound up in the lad'slife;} 31 It thall come topais, when he feeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die : and thy fervants fhall bring down the gray hairs of thy fervant our father with forrow to the grave. 32 For thy fervant became furety for the lad unto my father, faying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I thall bear the blame to my father for ever. 33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy fervant abide inftead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren. 34 For how thall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? Left peradventure I fee the evil that thall come on my father. THE CHAP. XLV. 1 Jofeph maketh himself known to his bre 2 And he wept aloud and the Egyptians, and the houfe of Pharaoh, heard. 3 And Jofeph faid unto his brethren, I am Jofeph: doth my father yet live! And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his prefence. 4 And 4. And Jofeph faid unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you: and they came near. And he faid, I am Jofeph your brother, whom ye fold into Egypt. 5 Now therefore, be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye fold me hither: for God did fend me before you to preferve lite.. 6 For these two years bath the famine been in the land; and yet there are five years, in the which there ball neither be caring nor harvert. 7 And God fent me before you to preferve you a pofterity in the earth, and to fave your lives by a great deliverance. 8 So now, it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt. 9 Hate ye, and go up to my father, and fay unto him, Thus faith thy fon Jofeph, God' Jacob is comforted at Beer-Sheba. departed: and he laid unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way. 25 And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto jacob their father, 26 And told him, faying, Jofeph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart tainted, for he believed them not. 27 And they told him all the words of Jo- 28 And Ifrael faid, It is enough; Jofeph my 1 Facob is comforted by God at Beer-fbeha hath made me lord of all Egypt; come down AND Ifrael took his journey with all that he unto me, tarry not. 10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Gofhen, and thou thalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou haft. 11 And there will I nourish thee, (for yet there are five years of tamine,) left thou, and thy houthold, and all that thou haft, come to poverty. 12 And, behold, your eyes fee, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin, that it is my mouth that fpeaketh unto you. 13 And ye thall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have feen: and ye thall hatte, and bring down my father hither. 14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's, neck, and wept; and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15 Moreover, he kiffed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him. 16 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh's houfe, faying, Jofeph's brethren are come and it pleated Pharaoh well, and his fervants. 17 And Pharaoh faid unto Jofeph, Say unto thy brethren, This do ye; fade your beafts, and go, get you unto the land of Canaan. 18 And take your father, and your houf holds, and come unto me: and I will give you. the good of the land of Egypt, and ye thall eat the fat of the land. 19 No thou art commanded, this do ye: Take you waggons out of the land of Fgypt for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. 20 Alfo regari not your turf: for the good of all the land of Egypt is our's. 21 And the children of Ifrael did for and Jofeph gave them waggoss, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provition for the way. 22 To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of filver, and five changes of saiment. 23 And to his father he feat after this man ner; ten alfes laden with the good things of Egypt, and ten the a fes laden with corn and bread, and meat for nis rather by the way. 24 So he feat his brethren away, and they had, and came to Beer-theba, and offered 3 And he faid, I am God, the God of thy 4 I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also furely bring thee up again: and Jofeph thall put his hand upon thine eyes. 5 And Jacob rofe up from Beer-theba: and the fons of Ifrael carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the waggons which Pharaoh had fent to carry him. 6 And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his feed with him. 7 His fons, and his fons fons with him, his daughters, and his fons daughters, and all his feed, brought he with him into Egypt. 8 And thefe are the names of the children of Ifrael which came into Egypt, Jacob and. his fons: Reuben, Jacob's first-born. 9 And the fons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi. 10 And the fons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar; and Shaul, the fon of a Canaanitish woman.. 11 And the fons of Levi; Gerthon, Ko 12 And the fons of Judah; Er, and Onan, And the ions of Zebulun; Sered, and 15 Thefe be the ions of Leah, which the bare 16 And the fons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezton, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli. 17 And the fons of Ather; Jimnah, and Ifhuan, and Ifui, and Beriah, and Serah their fer. And the fons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel. 18 These are the fons of Zilpah, whom 1.aban gaye to Lech his daughter: and thefe fhe 19 The bare unto Jacob, even üxicenfous, |
