And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daugh. ters unto you. 10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land fhall be before you: dwell and trade etherein, and get you poffeffions therein. 1 And Shechem faid unto her father, and pato her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall fay unto me I will give. 12 Ak me never fo much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye thall fay unto me: but give me the damfel to wife. 13 And the fons of Jacob anfwered She. chem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and faid (because he had defiled Dinah their fifter,) 14 And they faid unto them, We.cannot do this thing, to give our fifter to one that is circumcifed: for that were a reproach un. 15 But in this will we confent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcifed; 16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. 17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcifed; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone. 18 And their words pleafed Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's fon. 19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the boufe of his father. 20 And Hamor and Shechem his fon came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, faying, 21 Thefe men are peaceable with us, therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them: let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters. 21 Only herein will the men confent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcifed, as they are circumcifed. 23 shall not their cattle, and their fub. fance, and every beaft of their's, be our's? Only let us confent unto them, and they will dwell with us. 24 And unto Hamor, and unto Shechem his fon, hearkened all that went out of the gure of his city: and every male was circumcifed, all that went out of the gate of his city. 25And it came to pafs on the third day, when they were fore, that two of the fons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his fword, and came upon the city boldly, and flew all the males. 26 And they flew Hamor and Shechem his fon with the edge of the fword, and took Di. nah out of Shechem's houfe, and went out. 27 The fous of Jacob came upon the dain, Jacob fent to Beth-ch. and fpoiled the city; because they had defiled their fifter. 28 They took their theep, and their oxen, and their affes, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field. 29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives, took they captive, and fpoiled even all that was in the house. 30 And Jacob faid to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, to make me to flink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites, and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they fhall gather themfelves together against me, and flay me; and I fhall be deftroyed, I and my house. 31 And they faid, Should he deal with our fifter as with an harlot? CHAP. XXXV. 1 God fendeth Jacob to Bethel: 2 be purgeth bis house of idols, 6 and buildeth an aitar at Beth-el. 28 Ífaac's death. AND God faid unto Jacob, Arife, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there; and make there an altar unto God, that appeared us to thee when thou fleddeft from the face of Efau thy brother. 2 Then Jacob faid unto his houfhold, and to all that were with him, Fut away the ftrange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: 3 And let us arife, and go up to Beth-el and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my diftrefs, and was with me in the way which I went. 4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their ear-rings which were in their ears: and Ja cob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. 5 And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not purfue after the fons of Jacob. 6 So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, (that is Bethel,) he, and all the people that were with him. 7 And he built there an altar, and called the place Fl-beth-el; because there God ap. peared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother. 8 But Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and fhe was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allon-bachuch., 9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padan-aram, and bleif ed him. 10 And God faid unto him, Thy name is Ja. cob: thy name fhall not be called any more Jacob, but Ifrael fhall be thy name; and he called his name Ifrael. 11 And God faid unto him, I am God Almighty; be fruitful, and multiply: a nation, and a company of nations, thall be of thee; and kings thall come out of thy loins: 12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Ifaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy feed after thee will I give the land. 13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. 14 And Jacob fet up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of ftone; and he poured a drink-offering there. on, and he poured oil thereon. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Beth-el. XXXVII. 1 Jofeph is hated of his brethren: 5 his two dreams: 18 bis brethren confpire his death: 3 he is fold to Potiphar in Egypt. AND lacob dwelt in the land wherein his rather was a firanger, in the land of Canaan. Thefe are the generations of Jacob. To feph, being feventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the fons of Bilhah, and with the fons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Jofeph brought unto his father their evil report. 3 Now Ifrael loved Jofeph more than all his children, because he was the fon of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. 4 And when his brethren faw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not fpeak peaceably unto him. And Tofeph dreamed a dream, and he old if his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. 6 And he faid unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: 7 For, behold, we were bin ling theaves in the feld, and, lo, my theafarofe, and alfo ftood up right; and, behold, your theaves flood round about, and made obeifance to my theaf. 8 And his brethren faid to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us! And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the fun, and the moon, and the eleven ftars, made obeifance to me. 10 And he told to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and faid unto him, What is this dream that thou hatt dreamed? Shall I, and thy mother, and thy brethren, indeed come to bow down ourfelves to thee to the earth? 11 And his brethren envied him; but his father obferved the faying. 12 And his brethren went to feed their father's rock in Shechem. 13 And Ifrael faid unto Jofeph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? Cume, and. I will fend thee unto them And he said unto him, Here am I. 14 And he faid to him, Go, I pray thee, fee whether it be well with thy brethren, He is fold into Egyh and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So le fent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man aiked him, faying, What cekeft thou? 16 And he faid, I feek my brethren tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks. 17 And the man faid, They are departed hence: for I heard them fay, Let us go to Dothan And Jofeph went after his bre thren, and found them in Dothan. 18 And when they faw him atar off, even before he came near unto them, they confpired against him to lay him. 19 And they faid one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. 20 Come now therefore, and let us lay him, and caft him into fome pit: and we will fay, Some evil beaft hath devoured him and we thall ee what will become of his dreams. 21 And Reuben heard it, an i he delivered him out of their hands; and faid, Let us not kill him. 22 And Reuben faid unto them, Shed no blood, but caft him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out or their hands, to deliver him to his father again. 23 And it came to país, when Jofeph was come unto his brethren, that they ftripped Jofeph out of his coat, bis coat of many colours, that was on him. 24 And they took him, and caft him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25 And they fat down to cat bread; and they listed up their eyes, and looke i, and, behold, a company of thmeelites came from Gilead, with their camels bearing fpicery, and balm, and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. 26 And Judah faid unto his brethren, What profit is if if we lay our brother, and conceal his blocd? 27 Come, and let us fell him to the Ithmeel ites, and let not our hand be upon him: for he is our brother, and our fleth and his brethren were content. 28 Then there paffed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Jo. feph out of the pit, and fold Jofeph to the Ihmeelites for twenty pieces of filver: and they brought Jofeph into Egypt. 29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Jofeph was not in the pit and he rent his clothes. 30 And he returned unto his brethren, and faid, The child is not; and I, whither thail I go? 31 And they took Jofeph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood: 32 And they fent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their lather; and faid, This have we found: know now whether it be thy fon's coat or no. 33 And he knew it, and faid, It is my fon's coat; an evil beaft hath devoured), im: jofeph is without doubt rent in pieces. 34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put fackcloth upon his loius, and mourned for his fon many days. 35 And all his fons, and all his daughters, role up to comfort him; but he retuted to be comiorted: and he faid, For I will go B 4 Jown ་ GENESIS. down into the grave unto my fen mourning. AND it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whofe name was Hirah. 2 And Judah faw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whofe name was Shuah: and he took her, and went in unto her. 3 And the conceived, and bare a fon; and he called his name Er. 4 And the conceived again, and bare a fon; and the called his name Onan. 5 And the yet again conceived, and bare a fon; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib when the pare him. 6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whole name was Tamar. 7 And Er, Judah's firit-born, was wicked In the fight of the LORD; and the LORD flew him. 8 And Judah faid unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raife up feed to thy brother. 9 And Onan knew that the feed fhould not be his: and it came to pafs, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, left that he should give feed to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did difpleafed the LORD: wherefore he ilew him alfo. II Then faid Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow at thy father's houfe till Shelah my fon be grown: (for he faid, I.eit geradventure he die alfo as his brethren did:) and Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house. 12 And in procefs of time, the daughter of Shuah, Judah's wile, died: and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his ficer-thearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13 And it was told Tamar, faying, Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnath to Joseph's advancemen... 19 And the arofe, and went away, and laid by her veil from her, and put on the gar ments of her widowhood. 20 And Judah fent the kid by the band of his friend the Adullamite, to receive is pledge from the woman's hand, but he foundher not. 21 Then he asked the men of that place, faying, Where is the harlot, that was open ly by the way-fide? But he refused, and faid unto his mafter's vit, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed il that he hath to my hand: There is none greater in this houfe than 1; eber hath he kept back any thing from me bat thee, becaufe thou art his wife: how Then can I do this great wickeduets, and fin sgainst God! 10 And it came to pafs, as the fpake, to Johday by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her. 11 And it came to pals, about this time, that Ffeph went into the houfe to do his binets; and there was none of the men of the house there within. 12 And the caught him by his garment, faying, ie with me: and he felt his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. 13 And it came to pass, when the faw that be had left his garment in her hand, and was fed forth, 14 That the called unto the men of her houfe, and fpake unto them, faying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock : he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice. 15 And it came to pafs, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left bis garment with me, and red, and got him out. 20 And Jofeph's mafter took him, and put him into the prifon, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prifon. 21 But the LORD was with Jofeph, and thewed him merey, and gave him favour in the fight of the keeper of the prifon. 22 And the keeper of the prifon commit. ted to Jofeph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prifon; and whatsoever they did there he was the doer of it. 23 The keeper of the prifon looked not to any thing that was under his hand; becaufe the LORD was with him: and that which he did the LORD made it to profper. CHAP. XL. The butter and baker of Pharaoh are imprifoned: 5 fofeph interpreteth their dreams. A ND it came to país after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and bis baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt. 2 And Pharaoh was wroth against two of hisofficers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers. 3 And he put them in ward in the houfe of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Jofeph suas bound. and baker imprisoned. 4 And the captain of the guard charged Jofeph with them, and he ferved them; and they continued a feafon in ward. 5And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream; the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prifon. 6 And Jofeph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, bchold, they were fad.. 7 And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's houfe, faying, Wherefore look ye so fadly to-day! 8 And they faid unto him, We have dream ed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Jofeph faid unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me them, I pray you. 9And the chief butler told his dream to Jofeph, and faid to him, In my dream, be hold, a vine was before me; 10 And in the vine were three branches : and it was as though it budded, and her blooms thot forth; and the cluiters thereof brought forth ripe grapes. 11 And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and preffed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand. 12 And Jofeph izid unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days. 13 Yet within three days fhall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and, restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou waft his butler. 14 Eut think on me when it shall be well with thee, and thew kindness, I pray thee, unto me; and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this houfe: 15 For indeed I was itolen away out of the land of the Hebrews; and bere alfo have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon. 16 When the chief baker faw that the in terpretation was good, he faid unto Jofeph, alfo was in my dream, and, behold, I bas three white baskets on my head." 17 And in the uppermoft baiket there was of all manner of bake-meats for Pharaoh and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head. 18 And Jofeph answered and faid, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days. 19 Yet within three days thall Pharaoh lift up thy head from of thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy fleth from off thee. 20 And it came to pafs the third day, which was Pharaoh's birth-day, that he made a feaft unto all his fervants: and he lifted up the head of the chie: butler, and of the chief baker, among his fervants. 21 And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand: 22 But he hanged the chief baker, as Jofeph had interpreted to them.. 23.
