David; many of the persons who considered Jesus Christ as the Messiah, expressed that as their belief by calling him "the Son of David:" and when our Saviour put it to the Pharisees, Matt. xxii. 42. ante, 217. "What think ye of "Christ, whose Son is he ?" they at once answered, "the Son of David.”

(c) "Judgment and justice." Two of his characteristics. In Is. ix. 1—7. it is said of him "of the increase of his "government and peace there shall be no "end, upon the throne of David, and 66 upon his kingdom, to order it and to "establish it, with judgment and with "justice, from henceforth even for ever." And in Is. xi. 1-5. where it is said, that "there shall come forth a rod out "of the stem of Jesse," (David's father), " and a branch shall grow out of "his roots;" it is stated of him, that "with "righteousness shall he judge the poor, and "reprove with equity for the meek of the "earth; and righteousness shall be the "girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the "girdle of his reins."

the incommunicable name of God. See Hales's Dissertations, 200.

(e) "Our righteousness." Because through his mediation and atonement his righteousness is to be imputed to us to be carried to our account: to be reckoned ours: we through him are to be treated as righteous. See 1. Hales's Trinity, 232. "He of God (in the lan

(h) v. 8. "But, &c." The deliverance referred to shall so far surpass the deliverance from Egypt, that whereas the deliverance from Egypt has hitherto been looked up to as the great instance of God's interposition: the second shall so exceed it, as to be the only deliverance ever again named. It shall overwhelm by its superiority all remembrance of the former.

Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. 14. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, "This is of "a truth that Prophet that should "come into the world."

If there be any more Sundays before Advent Sunday, the Service of some of those Sundays that were omitted after the Epiphany shall be taken in, to supply so many as are here wanting. And if

there be fewer, the overplus may be omitted: Provided that this last Collect, Epistle, and Gospel, shall always be used upon the Sunday next before Advent.

() v. 9. "Confess, &c." Making inward conviction and open profession the two requisites: our Saviour put the necessity of a bold undaunted avowal of our faith in a strong light, (Matt. x. 32, 33.) "Whosoever shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father "which is in Heaven: but whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in Hea"ven." If such stress was then laid upon it when the avowal of Christianity exposed its professors to persecution and great temporal disadvantages, is it not equally incumbent upon every one now boldly and fearlessly to acknowledge his faith wherever it can be of service to religion, and to stand forward as one of its champions whenever it is assailed?

(m) "God hath raised, &c." ascribing it to the Father. “God," ¿ εòç. (x) v. 10. "Unto righteousness." To make him walk righteously, and to have righteousness and its reward imputed to him.

Saint Andrew, that he readily obeyed the calling of thy Son. Jesus Christ, and followed him without delay; Grant unto us all, that we being called by thy holy Word, may forthwith give up ourselves obediently to fulfil thy holy Commandments, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ir thou shalt confess (1) with thy The Epistle. Rom. x. 9. mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God (m) hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10. For with the heart man believeth unto (n) righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto (o) salvation. 11. For the Scripture (p) saith, "Whosoever believeth on "him shall not be ashamed." 12. For there is no difference (q) between the Jew and the Greek

"Behold, I lay in Sion for a "foundation a stone, a tried stone, a pre"cious corner stone, a sure foundation: "he that believeth shall not make haste," (i. e. shall have no occasion to fly.) Bp. Lowth translates it, "he that trusteth in "him shall not be confounded."

(q) v. 12. "No difference, &c." This is to justify the use of the general word in the preceding verse, "whosoever."

(r)" The Jew and the Greek." So Gal. iii. 28. "There is neither Jew nor "Greek, there is neither bond nor free, "there is neither male nor female, for ye

are all one in Christ Jesus ;" and to the same purpose is Col. iii. 11. Christianity knows no distinction of country, station, or sex. In the language of the Te Deum, Christ "hath opened the kingdom of Hea"ven to all believers."

13. For "whosoever (s) shall call 66 upon the name of the Lord "shall be saved." 14. How then (t) shall they (u) call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they (u) believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they (u) hear without a preacher? 15. and how shall they (u) preach, except they be sent ? as it is written (x), "How beautiful are the feet of "them that preach the Gospel of "peace, and bring glad tidings "of good things!" 16. But (y) they have not all obeyed the Gospel. For Esaias saith (z), "Lord, who hath believed our "report?" 17. So then (a) faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18. (s) v. 13. "Whosoever, &c." Without any distinction between Jew and Gentile; a quotation from Joel ii. 32.

(t) v. 14. "How then," i. e. " but how." This to the end of v. 15. seems put as an objection to give the opportunity of answering it: and from v. 16. inclusive, is the answer.

(u) "They," i. e. indefinitely, "any." (x) v.15. "Written," i. e. in Isaiah lii. 7. (y) v. 16. "But, &c." No want of preachers, but of belief: for what Isaiah foretold in part of the same prophecy, "Who hath believed, &c." is now verified.

(b) v. 18. "Heard," i. e. "had the op"portunity of hearing."

(c) "Yes, verily, &c." So much so, that the passage from Ps. xix. 4. "their "sound, &c." is true of the preachers of the gospel: there is no place their preaching has not reached. See ante, 234. note on Col. i. 6.

(d) v. 19. "First, &c." He answers the question by referring to Deut. xxxii. 21. and Isaiah Ixv. 1. (where the Israelites are

First (d) Moses saith, "I will provoke (e) you to "jealousy by them that are no "people, and by a foolish nation "I I will anger you." 20. But Esaias is very bold, and saith, "I "was found of them that sought "me not; I was made manifest "unto them that asked not after "me."

The Gospel. Matt. iv. 18. JESUS, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting (g) a net into the sea: for they were fishers. (h) 19. And he saith unto them,

described "as a disobedient people, and "as being surpassed by those who before "were not God's people,") and leaves it to the reader to apply the passages.

(e) "Provoke you to jealousy," i. e. "stir you up to emulation.". St. Paul states, (Rom. xi. 14.) as his reason for magnifying his office of apostle to the Gentiles," If by any means I may provoke "to emulation them which are my flesh," (i. e. the Jews) and might save some of "them."

66

(g) v. 18. "Casting," i. e. "to wash "them;" they had done fishing. See

Luke v. 2.

(h) "Fishers." "The foolish things "therefore of the world, to confound the "wise." See 1 Cor. i. 27. Our Saviour might be cautious in the selection of his apostles, to fix upon men of plain sense and veracity, men who would attest his miracles and way of life, and yet might not be too confident that he was the Messiah, and therefore might not be too forward in asserting that he was, as that would have exposed him to the Roman power. See Locke 133. 135.

OUR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven: Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit; that we may per fectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The TEN COMMANDMENTS.

Minister.

GOD spake these words, and said, I am the Lord thy God: Thou shalt have none other gods but me. People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them: For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and shew mercy unto thousands in them that love me, and keep my Commandments.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath-day. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all that thou hast to do; but the

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Let us pray.

ALMIGHTY God, whose kingdom is everlasting, and power infinite; Have mercy upon the whole Church; and so rule the heart of thy chosen chosen servant GEORGE, our King and Gominister he is) may above all vernor, that he (knowing whose things seek thy honour and glory; and that we, and all his subjects (duly considering whose authority he hath) may faithfully serve, honour, and humbly obey him, in thee, and for thee, according to thy blessed Word and ordinance, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who with thee and the Holy Ghost liveth and reigneth, ever one God, world without end Amen.

Or,

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, we are taught by thy holy Word, that the hearts of kings are in thy rule and governance, and that thou dost dispose and turn them as it seemet best to thy godly wisdom; We humbly beseech thee so to dispose and govern the heart of GEORGE thy servant, our King and Governor, that in all his thoughts, words, and works, he may ever seek thy honour and glory; and study to preserve thy people committed to his charge, in wealth, peace, and godliness. Grant this, O merci ful Father, for thy dear Son's sake Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
