is confirmed in Hosea, xiv. 5 and 6. " I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olivetree, and his smell as Lebanon." They will be as much amazed at Israel's fame and glory, as they were surprized at their lowness and disgrace in the eyes of all nations; and they will say to each other, what have not this people suffered of us during the time of their banishment and captivity?

For all that the Israelites endured during their captivity was not on account of their sins; No! we should have undergone their punishments; the pains which belonged to us, have they suffered as a forgiveness for our transgressions. Although they were slaves under our yoke, yet did they constantly pray for our welfare, and for Isaiah, liii. 4. “Yet

the success of our kingdom. we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted." Ib. xxxiii. 24. "And the Inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity," &c.

But the Almighty God out of his infinite love to Israel, punished them successively, for their transgressions, yet did not destroy them entirely, which he has promised through his prophets; as in Jer. xxx. 11, "For I am with

in high fame and honour. Isa. liii. 1. "Who hath believed our report?" &c. The same in Jer. xxxiii. 9. "And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness, and for all the prosperity, that I procure unto it." The same in Micah, vii. 16 and 17." The nations shall see, and be confounded at all their might: they shall lay their hand upon their mouth, their ears shall be deaf. They shall lick the dust like a serpent, they shall move out of their holes like worms of the earth: they shall be afraid of the LORD our God, and shall fear because of thee." This agrees with what Isaiah says, liii. 2. "For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground; he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we should see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him." And in Jer. xvi. 19. "The Gentiles shall come unto thee, from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanities, and things wherein there is no profit."

Thus will nations exclaim at a future period and say, this people were formerly scorned and revilled, but are now in full blossom as the branch of a tree, and as a root out of dry ground. This

be dismayed, O Israel; for lo I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the hand of their captivity; and Jacob shall return and be in rest, and quiet, and none shall make him afraid," &c. Thus in Psa. cxxxvi. 22. " Even an heritage unto Israel, his servant," &c. In all these verses we find that GOD calls Israel his people, in singular (or as one body), his servant.

Now we will return to, and renew our former treatise. It stands in Isa. lii. 14. "As many were astonished at thee," &c. none can withstand but that the aforesaid is real truth. For if a being, with ever so odd an appearance, should come from the end of the world, the surprise would not be so great as at Judah: moreover his wearing a beard. Surely he would be despised and ridiculed: he would create astonishment, and be exclaimed at-Here, Jew! Have some pork? and more of such despicable scandal, which it is impossible can be denied. Ib. 15." So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him," &c. The word sprinkle, Iase, corresponds with the word in Isa. lxiii. 3. "And their blood shall be sprinkled (Tas) upon my garments," &c. that the kings shall shut their mouths at him, namely, kings themselves shall lock their mouths out of amazement, when they behold the glory of Israel, for then will they say, This nation, which we have dispised and ridiculed, we now behold
