even when they stood under the king of the land. At the time of the second temple they were not free; and how can we call this a complete redemption, particularly when Daniel prophecied the destruction of the second temple through Titus, before it was erected. Isa. xi. 14. "But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines towards the west; they shall spoil them of the east together; they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab, and the children of Ammon shall obey them." By this we see, that at the time of the second temple no Messiah was come, because here it is said that Israel shall revolt against Edom; and, previous to the rebuilding of the temple, Daniel saw that Edom should, time to come, destroy the house (or temple), and that we should be a considerable time under the yoke of Edom, as is seen in Dan. viii. 11. "Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down." Ib. vii, 25. “And they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time."

Consequently all the prophets prophecy in allusion to the expiration of these days, that the complete redemption (when all the inhabitants of the earth shall acknowledge ONE only GOD) is to come. Then He will fulfil his promise to the house of Judah, Israel, and all the inhabitants of the earth, and then the children of Israel will be redeemed from their exiles to which they were emigrated. Isa. xi. 15 and 16. "And the LORD shall destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea, and with His mighty wind shall He shake His hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven

Moses pointed out to us, in Deut. xxx. 4. "If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence shall the LORD thy GOD gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee." lb. xxvii. 64. "And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other." From this it is clearly to be understood, that it is not alluding to the destruction of Babylon, but to the present, because the rescue of Babylon was not a complete deliverance. Of the complete redemption Isaiah says, xi. 13." The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off." (The ten tribes term themselves, in consequence of Jaroboam, their first king, descendants of the stem of Ephraim.) 1 Kings, xi. 26. “ Jaroboam, son of Nebat an Ephrathite:" Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim." Ezek. xxxvii. 15 and 16. "The word of the LORD came again unto me saying, Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick," &c. Ib. 21 and 22," And say unto them, Thus saith the LORD God, Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: and will make them one nation, in the land upon the mountains of Israel, and one king to them all; and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall be divided into two kingdoms any more at all."

This shows plainly that at that time it was not a complete redemption; not alone Judah and Israel were not one people (because they were not together), nay, they likewise had not one king,

אכן זה הראייה ברורה שלא היה באותן

These are the ten tribes whom GOD has promised to gather in the times of the Messiah, who shall be saved a second time; that means, "Shall set his hand again the second time;" because the ten tribes were not released by the second temple, but only Judah, Benjamin, and the half of the stem of Mannasseh, who came from the captivity of Babylon. GoD also said, Hos. i. 6 and 7. "For I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel, but I will take them away. But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah" but in future" the LORD shall set his hand again the second time, to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left from Assyria," &c. Isa. xi. 12. " And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, because they were drove to great distances for a length of time." Therefore, says Hosea, iii. 4 and 5. "For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim. Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days." Therefore, says the prophet," the outcasts of Israel," (ib.) "and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth." From this it is perceived, that the ten tribes did not return to the second temple, because if they were, why are they not found among the tribes of Judah? But it is known, that the ten tribes were not released again. Yea, even Judah were not emigrated to the four quarters of the globe before the second temple, but only in the land of the Chaldees, and that region could not be called the four quarters of the globe.
