What did our Lord command his disciples to do after the people had eaten? To gather up the fragments that nothing might be lost.

What should we learn from this?

Never to waste anything.

What did the people say?

"This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world."

We learn from this miracle of our blessed Lord's, to be kind and compassionate to all, and to help those that are in want as far as we cau; all are able to be of some use to others, if they have no money to give, by devoting some of their time, health, and strength to the service of their neighbour; for even a kind word to the afflicted will often comfort them more than a gift. How thankful should we be for God's daily mercies to us: he gives us food to eat every day we live; let us never forget to thank him for this, and always to follow the example our Saviour set us of returning

thanks before our meals, remembering that to God we owe our daily bread, not only for the body, but for the soul. Jesus says, "I am the bread of life, he that cometh to me shall never hunger." The bread we eat only keeps our bodies alive for a little time, but Christ can keep our souls to eternal life.

Behold! where on the green hills spread,

Close by the water-side,

The hungry multitudes are fed,

At peaceful eventide.

The Lord, whose words they come to hear,

Has pity on their need;

He comes the weary heart to cheer,

The hungry poor to feed.

Oh! like my Lord would I delight

In doing good to all,

And serving them with all my might,
When they for pity call.
