des-cend-ing like a dove, and lighting up-on him. And lo, a voice from heav-en, say-ing, "This is my be-lov-ed Son, in whom I am well pleas-ed."

QUESTIONS.

Did Jesus Christ need pardon, that he came to be baptized?

No. Christ never sinned, and, therefore, did not need pardon.

Would John the Baptist baptize Christ at first?

66

No. He said, I have need to be baptized of thee and comest thou to me?" Why did he say this?

Because he did not think himself worthy to baptize Christ.

What did our Saviour say?

66

Suffer it to be so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness." What is fulfilling all righteousness? Doing the will of God in all things. What wonderful thing was

seen when

Lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him."

What was heard at the same time?

"Lo, a voice was heard from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

From whom did this voice come?

From God the Father.

What does this show us?

That Jesus Christ is really the Son of God.

Are God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost three Gods ?

No; three Persons in one Godhead.

What is this called?

The Holy Trinity.

After Jesus had been baptized, as he came out of the water, the heavens were opened, and a voice was heard. It was the voice of God. And the Holy Spirit came down from heaven and rested upon the head of Jesus. Thus you see the Holy Trinity, three persons in one God, were there God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. We cannot understand it, but we must believe that though there are three Persons, there is but one God. We could not be saved without the three persons in the Blessed Trinity. Oh, my dear children, be thankful for the blessings which are given you in the Gospel. Believe in, obey, and love God, and you shall be blessed here and hereafter.

Judea's desert heard a sound

Of one that cried aloud,
They flocked the holy John around,
With sin and sadness bowed.

Lo! mid that guilty company,
A sinless Lamb drew near;

His blood alone that crowd can free
From guilt, and shame, and fear.

Before the Sun, a taper dim,

John stands and meekly pleads,

Nor pours the hallowing wave,—of Him The Baptist washing needs.

But to obey his God, 'tis meet,
Though he himself depress,
Prepared all fulness to complete,
Perfect in righteousness.

To him who washed us with his blood,

As hath been heretofore,

To Father, and to Spirit good,
Be glory evermore.

LESSON SIXTEENTH.

LUKE IV. 1. MATTHEW IV. 2—11.

AND Je-sus being full of the Holy Ghost, re-turn-ed from Jor-dan, and was led by the Spi-rit in-to the wil-der-ness to be tempt-ed of the dev-il. And when he had fast-ed for-ty days and for-ty nights, he was af-ter-wards an hun-ger-ed. And when the tempt-er came to him, he said "If thou be the Son of God, com-mand that these stones be made bread." But He an-swer-ed and said, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread a-lone, but by ev-er-y word that pro-ceed-eth out of the mouth of
