forth through-out all Ju-de-a, and through-out all the re-gion round a-bout.

QUESTIONS.

Of what miracle have you now been reading?

Christ raising the widow's son to life.
Into what city did our Saviour go?
Into a city called Nain.

Who went with him?

Many of his disciples, and much people.
What occurred when he came nigh to

the gate of the city?

A dead man was carried out.

Whose son was he?

The only son of a widow.

When the Lord saw her what did he

say?

He had compassion on her, and said, "Weep not."

What did he do besides?

He came and touched the bier.

What did he say?

"Young man, I say unto thee, arise.”

What happened then?

He that was dead sat up, and began to

speak.

By whose power did the Lord perform this miracle?

By his own power.

How do you know this?

Because he said,

66

Young man, I say

unto thee, arise."

What should we learn from this miracle?

To have compassion upon the afflicted. What effect had this miracle on the people?

There came a fear on all, and they glorified God, saying, that "a great prophet is risen up among us, and that God hath visited his people."

All the miracles of our Lord show us the pity he had for the sufferings of others. Our Saviour saw in this poor widow who had lost her only son, an instance of great affliction. This world is full of trouble; trials and afflictions happen to all: you must have trials some time or other. Our gracious Redeemer well knows our sufferings, and pities us: and when we read of the many proofs of his love and tenderness, we may well be comforted with the thought that we have indeed a merciful High Priest who is assuredly touched with the feeling of our infirmities. And what return can we make to him? He himself has told us, "If ye love me, keep my commandments,” and these we know "are not grievous," and are contained in one word, "love:" love to God and love to our neighbour; our Saviour's whole life was one continued act of love. Endeavour with his aid to follow his blessed example: lose no opportunity of showing kindness to others: let love be the ruling action of your lives: pray and strive against ill-temper, hatred, malice,

passion, uncharitableness, and be kind and tender-hearted. St. John says, "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God: he that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is love. And this commandment have we from him, that he who loveth God, love his brother also."

A widowed mother lost her son,
She had no son beside,
He was her loved, her only one,
And he fell sick and died.

And many a friend shed many a tear,
But none had power to save,
They placed the body on the bier,
To bear it to the grave.

When, lo! a company appears,

A band by Jesus led,

Jesus can dry the mourner's tears,
Jesus can raise the dead.

His heart, with tender pity moved,

66

Felt for the widow's grief;

Weep not," he said, and soon he proved,
His hand could give relief.

He touched the bier-the mourners' eyes,
Are fixed upon the Lord,
"Young man, I say to thee, arise,"
Is his almighty word.

He rises up, he speaks, he lives,
No tear need now be shed,
Christ to the widowed mother gives,
The child she mourned as dead.

LUKE VIII. 41-56.
