"THE heart is deceitful above all things,.and desperately wicked, who can know it?"" and as this is the witness concerning every unchanged heart, so are there some whose depths of deceit are so laid open to us in the record of truth, such light on the surface, and such darkness beneath, such knowledge of the truth, and yet such love of sin, that the words of Jeremiah present themselves to us, whilst studying such characters, with a power, an awful meaning, beyond our previous conception; we are conscious that there is a mystery in iniquity, a depth of Satan, which no eye but One hath yet seen into, and in the thoughts thus pressed on our mind we commune with our own heart and are still. Such a character is Balaam's: let us study it in this and two following discourses, and may the Spirit enable us to receive the warning it is so calculated to give! B |
