BREASTPLATE. thou shalt make the breastplate Exod. xxviii, 15, 16, 22-29. Four-square it shall be, being doubled; a span shall be the length thereof, and a span shall be the breadth thereof. And they set in it four rows of stones; the first row was a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: this was the first row. And the second row, an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond. And the third row, a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst. And the fourth row, a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper: they were inclosed in ouches of gold in their inclosings. And the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, every one with his name, according to the twelve tribes. And they made the ends, of wreathen work of upon the breastplate chains at pure gold. And they made two ouches of gold, and two gold rings; and put the two rings in the two ends of the breastplate. And they put the two wreathen chains of gold in the two rings on the ends of the breastplate. URIM AND THUMMIM. Exod. xxviii, 9-11, 30. And thou shalt take two onyx-stones, and grave on them the names of the children of Israel: Six of their names on one stone, and the other six names of the rest on the other stone, according to their birth. But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. For the LORD had spoken unto Moses, saying, Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel. Num. iii, 15, 16, 39-41, 45. Number the children of Levi, after the house of their fathers, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them. And Moses numbered them, according to the word of the LORD, as he was commanded. All that were numbered of the Levites, which Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the LORD, throughout their families, all the males, from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand. And the LORD said unto Moses, Number all the first-born of the males of the children of Israel, from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. And thou shalt take the Levites for wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean. Then let them shalt gather the whole assembly rael unto them. And Moses told it unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel. Num. iv, 47. From thirty years old and upward, even unto fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congrega tion. Num. viil, 24-26. This is it that belongeth unto the Levites; From twenty and five years old and upward they shall go in to wait upon the service of the tabernacle of the congregation: And from the age of fifty years they shall cease waiting upon the service thereof, and shall serve no more; But shall minister with their brethren in the tabernacle of the congregation, to keep the charge, and shall do no service. Thus shalt thou do unto the Levites touching their charge. 1 Chron. xxiii, 24-27. These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; even the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward. For David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever: And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof. For, by the last words of David, the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above. THREE CLASSES. GERSHON, KOHATH, AND MERARI. Num. iii, 21-24, 27, 28, 33, 34. Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimites: these are the families of the Gershonites. Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them, were seven thousand and five hundred. The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behind the tabernacle westward. And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael. And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izeharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites. In the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary. Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of Merari. And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred. Take the sum of the sons of KoNum. iv, 2, 3, 22, 23, 29, 30, 34-46. hath from among the sons of Levi, after their families, by the house of their fathers; From thirty years old and upward, even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation. Take also the sum of the sous of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families: From thirty years old and upward, until fifty years old, shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation. These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron did number, according to the commandment of the LORD. And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers, From thirty years old and upward, even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation; Even those that were numbered of them, after their families, were three thousand and two hundred. These be those lies of the sons of Merari, whom that were numbered of the famiMoses and Aaron numbered, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses. All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron, and the chief of Israel, numbered, after their families, and after the house of their fathers. INFERIOR TO THE PRIESTS. Num. ill, 6, 7, 9. Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation, before the tabernacle of the congregation, to do the service of the tabernacle. And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron, and to his sons: they are wholly given Israel. unto him out of the children of Num. viii, 22. And after that went the Levites in to do their service in the tabernacle of the before his sons: as the LORD had congregation before Aaron, and commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so did they unto them. Num. xviii, 2, 6. And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee but thon and thy sons with thee shall minister before the tabernacle of witness. And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel; to you they are given as a gift for the LORD, to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation. 1 Chron. xxiii, 28, 31, 32. Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron, for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God; And to offer all burnt-sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new-moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order command ed unto them, continually before the LORD; And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.
