is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Iler ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her; and happy is every one that retaineth her. The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

Prov. iv, 5-13. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy get ting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee; she shall bring thee to honour when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

the beginning of his way, before
his works of old. I was set up
from everlasting, from the begin

there were no depths, I was
brought forth; when there were no
fountains abounding with water.
Before the mountains were settled;
before the hills was I brought forth:
While as yet he had not made
the earth, nor the fields, nor the

world. When he prepared the
heavens, I was there: when he set
a compass upon the face of the
depth: When he established the
clouds above: when he strength-
ened the fountains of the deep:
When he gave to the sea his de-
cree, that the waters should not
pass his commandment: when he
appointed the foundations of the
earth: Then I was by him, as one
brought up with him; and I was
daily his delight, rejoicing always
before him; Rejoicing in the
habitable part of his earth; and
my delights were with the sons
of men. Now therefore hearken
unto me, O ye children: for blessed
are they that keep my ways.
Hear instruction, and be wise,
and refuse it not. Blessed is the
man that heareth me, watching
daily at my gates, waiting at the
posts of my doors. For whoso

PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.

Eccles. i, 2, 3, 12, 13. Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem; And I to my heart seek and gave search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath

God given to the sons of man, to

be exercised therewith.

Eccles. ii, 20-26. Therefore I

went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I

took under the sun. For there is

a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man

that hath not laboured therein shall he leave

it for his portion. This also is vanity, and a great evil. For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun? For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity. There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and

that he should make his soul

enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God. For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than 1? For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather, and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Eccles. iii, 10-13. I have seep the travail which God hath given in it. He hath made every thing to the sons of men to be exercised beautiful in his time: also be hath set the world in their heart; so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour,it is the gift of God.

Eccles. vill, 5, 6, 7, 15. Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing, and a wise man's heart discerneth both time

and judgment. Because to every purpose there is time and judg ment, therefore the misery of knoweth not that which shall be: man is great upon him. For he

for who can tell him when it shall be? Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry; for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.

vanities, saith the Preacher, all is Eccles. xii, 8, 13. Vanity of vanity. Let us hear the couclusion of the whole matter; Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty

of man.

Esther v. 9-13. Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with a glad heart; but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him, he was full of indignation against Mordecai. Nevertheless Haman refrained

himself: and when he came home, he sent and called for his friends,

and Zeresh his wife. And Haman riches, and the multitude of his told them of the glory of his children, and all the things whereand how he had advanced him in the king had promoted him, above the princes and servants of the king. Haman said moreover, Yea, Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and to-morrow am I invited unto her also with the

king. Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate.
