motto, “Justitia et misericordia," implying that “ Justice and mercy ” have no place there.
Such is a slight glance at this diabolical contrivance, in every line of which we see how completely opposed Popery is to the WORD and SPIRIT of the living God. Such an institution should we soon have erected in Great Britain, if ever Popery gained the ascendancy. The religion of Popery is as bloodthirsty as ever. Persecution is the element in which it thrives.
VARIETIES. ATTEMPT TO MURDER. — -Mr.J. P. Stanfield, of Nearford House, Surrey, shot Sir R. Cardington, of Wilford, on Saturday last, in a duel on Westwood Common. It was the second shot, and Sir Robert's ball passed through his adversary's collar.
These lunatics should be confined. Their friends are much to blame in allowing them to have fire-arms.
WHO IS THE GREATER WRETCH ?-A man arrested by his own son. The following scene occurred in the Insolvent Court, Cork :-Andrew Coughlan, a miserable old man (his age could not have been under eighty years), was opposed by Mr. D. M'Carthy, on the ground of having no notice served upon him, though he owed him £8 12s. law costs. Michael Coughlan was sworn, and deposed that he arrested insolvent and brought him to Cork. Mr. Gallwey: What relation are you to the insolvent ? He is my father !-(Great sensation.) And did you arrest your father ?—I did, when I was paid for it. (This admission was followed by low but unequivocal expressions of execration all through the court, amidst which the son retired. The insolvent was discharged.—Cork Examiner.
Now the Pope professes to be able to grant indulgences, and yet keeps HIS OWN FATHER in the flames of Purgatory, because he cannot pay to get out. The Pope is surely much worse than the Devil himself, for, according to the council of Trent, he cannot keep souls in purgatory, and the Pope will not let them out!!!

The Papists do not believe these articles of the Christian faith, as is clear from the Popish blasphemy of transubstantiation. No real human body, BONES AND NErves, can be in two places at the same time; as the priests declare that Christ is on their Altars, they cannot believe that He “ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of the Father.”
Their wheaten god never descended into hell, nor ever ascended into heaven. The highest place it ever ascended was man's mouth; the lowest we shall not mention. The more Popery is compared with the Bible and common sense, the more its rottenness and irrationality appear.
HEAVEN ENSURED FOR A HALF-PENNY. The Bishop of Verdun concludes as follows one of his charges:“ Your HALF-PENNY will help to save a soul from death, will cover the multitude of your sins, and will ENSURE for you an eternal crown in HEAVEN.”!!!" Glance at the Institution for the propagation of the Faith," p. 32.
Who would go to purgatory? when he can get to heaven for a HALF-PENNY!!! Farewell masses, &c. for ever.
In Tetzel's time it cost a shilling to go to heaven, but things are altered now, and unless the Bishop of Verdun is an enormous liar, and a vile impostor, one can get there one's self and help another too, all for ONE HALF-PENNY!!!
Such is Popery in the nineteenth century !!!
CONVERTED IDOLATORS. LIVERPOOL. -“ Another convert from Romanism has been received into Christ's Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, at St. Simon's Church, Gloucester Street. This is the sixth person who has publicly renounced Popish Idolatry within the last twelve months.” Thank God for it.
INTERESTING STORY. AGED CONVERTS. ABOUT four months ago an old man of seventy-five years of age was in the habit of constantly attacking one of our female teachers on the score of her Bible reading, warning her of her danger, and assuring her that she was on the high road to hell and destruction. In spring last she met this man on the road, who, as usual, commenced abusing her, when she asked him for the tenth time how he came to speak against the thing of which he knew nothing, and begged permission to read a wee bit out of this condemned book—at length he consented, saying, that he would just listen to her for this once, in return for which he hoped she would give it up for ever. Down they sat upon the road side, and - drawing forth her Irish Testament, commenced reading the first chapter of John's Gospel,
