PREFACE.

40 DE

THE Publisher of the present volume, having completed the series of Spelling books, which he had in view, and submitted them to the Public, has been induced to believe, from the favourable reception they have met with, as well as from other considerations, that an Expositor, or selection of words, properly accentuated and explained, would not only form a valuable addition to the former series, as a spelling book, but would prove acceptable in our schools as a book of definitions. This opinion has been sanctioned by several persons, whose experience in teaching gives weight to their approbation.

The present collection has been arranged by two teachers in New-York. Their object has been to make a copious selection of the most useful words in our language; to mark the accent and pronunciation conformable to our best authorities, and in the defini. tions, to combine, as far as practicable, brevity with precision. Such words as would offend the ear of delicacy in mixed schools, have been carefully omitted. The list of scientific terms, the publisher presumes, will be considered as no small recommendation to a work of this kind. When we reflect upon that grow

ing attention to many of the liberal sciences which has marked the progress of education for several years past, and take into view the facility which an early acquaintance with terms, affords to the acquisition of knowledge, it is not a little surprising, that greater pains have not been taken in our common schools, to make the most useful terms of science familiar to our youth.

In the size and price of the book, regard has been had to economy, and to the convenience of learners.

S. W.
