COLLINS' ODE TO THE PASSIONS.

Pour'd through the mellow horn her pensive soul:
And, dashing soft, from rocks around,

Bubbling runnels join'd the sound.

Through glades and glooms the mingled measure stole; Or o'er some haunted streams, with fond delayRound a holy calm diffusing,

Love of peace and lonely musing

In hollow murmurs died

away.

But, oh, how alter'd was its sprightlier tone!
When Cheerfulness, a nymph of healthiest hue,
Her bow across her shoulders flung,

Her buskins gemm'd with morning dew,

Blew an inspiring air, that dale and thicket rung; The hunter's call, to Faun and Dryad known.

The oak-crown'd sisters, and their chaste-eyed queen,
Satyrs, and sylvan boys, were seen,

Peeping from forth their alleys green;

Brown Exercise rejoiced to hear;
And Sport leap'd up, and seized his beechen spear.

Last, came Joy's ecstatic trial.

He, with viny crown advancing,

First to the lively pipe his hand address'd;
But soon he saw the brisk awakening viol,
Whose sweet entrancing voice he loved the best.
They would have thought, who heard the strain,
They saw, in Tempe's vale, her native maids,
Amid the festal-sounding shades,

To some unwearied minstrel dancing;

While, as his flying fingers kiss'd the strings,
Love framed with Mirth a gay fantastic round-
Loose were her tresses seen, her zone unbound;
And he, amid his frolic play,

As if he would the charming air repay,
Shook thousand odours from his dewy wings.

THE YOUNG COMPOSER,

OR, PROGRESSIVE EXERCISES IN ENGLISH COMPOSITION; Part 1, comprising Sentence-making, Variety of Expression, and Figurative Language, with Appendices on the use of Capitals and Punctuation. By JAMES CORNWELL, PH.D.

"The plan of this work is very superior. We are persuaded that this little work will be found valuable to the intelligent instructor."-Westminster Review. "Dr. Cornwell has furnished an admirable work in this description of literature, a very valuable addition to ordinary, or what should be ordinary, schoolbooks. He has carefully avoided the adoption of technical terms of strange and deterring sound, employing common terms in their usual meanings, so that the familiar phraseology of elementary works is made accessory to the introduction of a new but necessary branch of English education. We have no hesitation in recommending the addition of 'The Young Composer' to the regular contents of every satchel."-Colonial Magazine.

"The excellence of the Grammar published by the late Dr. Allen and Dr. Cornwell, makes us almost despair of witnessing any decided improvement in this department."-Athenæum.

"The learned authors are evidently well acquainted with several of the Teutonic languages; they have closely studied the great works of Grimm, Becker, and other German philologists; and the result has been that they have produced a work, which we feel sure will eventually be used in all schools in which the English language is taught in a sound and philosophical manner, The arrangement of the work is excellent; each part is in its proper place; and while it is undoubtedly the most philosophical, we believe it will be found the easiest Grammar that has yet been published."-Eclectic Review.

"Written by those who are profoundly acquainted with the sources of our language, and who have brought this acquaintance to bear on its grammatical structure. This Grammar will, we are convinced, make its way in schools."Church of England Quarterly.
