ADDENDA TO THE NOTES.

PAGE 1.-Mr. Edward Thelwall, Lord Herbert of Cherbury's Tutor.

THE passage in the Life of Edward Lord Herbert referred to is as follows: "After I had attained the age of nine, during all which time I lived in my said Lady Grandmother's house at Eyton, my parents thought fit to send me to some place where I might learn the Welsh tongue, as believing it necessary to enable me to treat with those of my friends and tenants who understood no other language, whereupon I was recommended to Mr. Edward Thellwall, of Place-ward in Denbyshire: this gentleman I must remember with honour, as having of himself acquired the exact knowledge of Greek, Latin, French, Italian and Spanish, and all other learning, having for that purpose neither gone beyond seas, nor so much as had the benefit of any Universities: Besides he was of that rare temper in governing his choler, that I never saw him angry during the time of my stay there, and have heard so much of him for many years before: when occasion of offence was given him, I have seen him redden in the face and after remain for a while silent; but when he spake, his words were so calm and gentle, that I found he had digested his choler, though yet I confess I could never attain that perfection as being subject ever to choler and passion, more than I ought, and generally to speak my mind freely, and indeed rather to imitate those who having fire within doors, choose rather to give it vent than suffer it to burn the house. I commend yet much more the manner of Mr. Thelwall, and certainly he that can forbear speaking for some time will remit much of his passion, but as I could not learn much of him in this kind, so I did as little profit in learning the Welsh, or any other of those languages that worthy gentleman understood, as having a tertian ague for the most part of nine months, which was all the time I staid in his house."

The family of the Thelwalls is perhaps the oldest in North Wales of English extraction, and was so connected with the parishes of Ruthin and Llaurhydd, and

with the Goodmans, that a brief account of them will be an appropriate appendage to the foregoing Memoirs, in addition to what has been said of them in the Note to page 45. The Patriarch of this family was John Thelwall, who came to Ruthin in the service of Lord Grey de Ruthin about the middle of the fourteenth Century, and derived his name from his native place in Cheshire, which is thus described by Leland in 1545. "Thelwall was sometime a Havenet and little Citye as it appearith by the Kinges Recordes, so caullid becawse it was wallid abowte with great logges, or timber postes--it stondith two myles from Warington." This John bore on his Coat Armour Gules, on a Chevron Argent three trefoils sable, between three boars' heads couped of the second. To this Coat was afterwards added the Crest of a Stag proper armed and unguled Or, upon a Wreath of his colours on a mount proper, wounded with an arrow or feather'd Arg. which is accounted for in the following words by Sir John Wynn, of Gwydir, in his History of his own Family. "The Thelwalls of Ruthyn being antient Gentlemen of that Country, who came into it with the Lords Grey, on whome King Edward the 1st bestowed the Country of Dyffryn Clwyd, were at contention with a Septe of that Country called the Family of Gryffydd Gôch. These being more in number than the Thelwalls, (although the Thelwalls carried the whole offices of the Country under the Lord thereof, the Lord of Kent then Treasurer of England) drave the Thelwalls to take the Castle of Ruthyn for their defence, where they beseiged them until the seige was raysed by John ap Meredith, his sonnes and Kindred, to whom the Thelwalls sent for ayde, and in that exployte Robert ap John ap Meredith was slain with an arrow in a Wood called Coed Marchan." Upon which exploit, the Thelwalls assumed as their Crest a Deer pierced with an arrow, and from this conceit, so frequent in the annals of Chivalry, that Meredith and his Kindred having secluded himself in the Wood and Thickets of Coed Marchan, had acquired among the vulgar the denomination of the outlying Deer.

This original John Thelwall married Felice the daughter and heir of Walter Cooke, alias Ward, of Plâs y Ward, near Ruthin. His descendants continued there, connecting themselves with the best families of the Principality, and in turn serving the office of Sheriff of the County for three hundred years, when finally the
