A.

THE WILL OF CABRIEL GOODMAN, D. D.

In the Name of GOD, Amen.

I, GABRIEL GOODMAN, Doctor of Divinity, Dean of the Collegiate Church of St. Peter's, Westminster, being at this present of good Health of Body, and of perfect memory, (God be thanked), therefore do make and declare this my last Will and Testament, in writing, the second Day of March, in the Year of our Lord 1600, and in the forty-third of our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth, of the Grace of GoD Queen of England, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &c. in manner and form following.

Imprimis. I commend my Soul into the Hand of GOD, the Father Almighty, my Maker, by whose great mercy, through the merits of the Death and Passion of His only Son my Lord and Saviour and only Redeemer JESUS CHRIST, I hope and believe to be saved, and to be of the Number of his Elect, having His Holy Spirit a witness of His Grace, and an earnest of the Heavenly Inheritance. I do also confess, acknowledge, and believe All and singular the Articles and Hystories of the true antient Christian, Apostolic, and Catholic Faith, and all whatsoever that is contained in the Holy and Sacred Bible, and agreeing thereunto, praying unto God the Father of all mercies, and the GoD of Peace, that the Prayer of our Saviour CHRIST, in John 17th. may work most effectually in these latter days, and that He would sanctify all those that believe on Him by His Truth, that they may be one as He and His Father be one. I do desire and will my Body to be buried in the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, Westminster, near to the place where my good Predecessor and Reverend Father, Mr. Doctor Bill, late Dean thereof, of holy memory, lyeth buried.

Item. I do will my said Burial to be done orderly and decently, by the good discretion of my Executors, without all pomp, in an assured hope of Resurrection unto Glory and Immortality, to the value of two hundred Marks.

Item. I do also wish and desire that there be a Sermon at the said Burial, and the said Sermon to be preached by one of my said Brethren, the Prebendaries, to whom I give a mourning Gown and a Hood.

Item. I wish all my Servants, and College Servants, and Cousins, which shall be at my Funeral, shall have Black appointed to them by the discretion of my Execu

tors.

Item. I give to Mr. Holmes, Chaunter of this Church, a mourning Gown.

Item. I do give to each Minister that serveth in this Church, or in the Parish Church, six shillings and eight-pence.

Item. I do give to every Singing Man of the said Church three shillings and four-pence.

Item. I do give to the Schoolmaster a Ring of Gold, with this posy, “Posui Fundamentum meum in Domino."

Item. To the Usher a Ring of Gold with a Death's Head, with this posy, "Disce Mori."

Item. I give Mr. Camden (now Clarencieux, and my good old Friend) my second Ring of Gold with a Turkey Stone, desiring him to accept of the same, and to give directions to my Executors for performance of my Funeral.

Item. 1 give to Mr. Hooper, Master of the Choristers, a Ring of Gold which my Lord Dier gave me, gave me, with this posy, "Plebs sine lege ruit."

Item. I give to Her Majesty's Scholars, being forty in number, either pieces. private, or forty shillings in money, to be bestowed by the discretion of the School

master.

Item. I do give to the ten Choristers, Books of Prayers, to be appointed by the Chaunter and their Master.

Item. I do give to every one of the Almsmen of this Church, being twelve in number, a Black Gown, and the same to be kept by the Bell Ringers of the said. Church, by the discretion of the Chaunter, and they to wear them on Sundays and Holydays, in Term time, and not otherwise.

Item. I do give to my good Lord the Bishop of Bangor, and to his Successors, being Presidents of the Hospital of Christ in Ruthin, a Ring of Gold, with this posy, "Hodie mihi, cras tibi," whom I do humbly desire, for CHRIST's sake, to see to the well using of the said Hospital, School, and Library, and to that which is and shall be appointed to the use of the same.

Item. Whereas I have, by Her Majesty's License of Mortmain, erected an Hospital, called Christ's Hopital, in Ruthin, and have, accordingly, passed the same to the use of the said President, Warden, and twelve poor folks, I do, in Visceribus Jesu Christi, desire the said President and Warden to have a great care for the well and charitable using of the same, according to the Statutes and Ordinances and Rules which I have made by virtue of that Grant, and acknowledged the same in the High Court of Chancery. And, also, whereas I have annexed hereunto a Free School, newly erected; and have procured Her Majesty's Gracious Grant of that Portion of Llanelidan which Doctor Parry hath had, and now hath, to be used according to the Statutes and Rules devised by me; and, likewise acknowledged in Chancery, for the better Government of the said School. I do will and wish the said President and Warden to have special care and favour thereunto, with free ingress and regress to the Schoolmaster, Usher, and Scholars thereunto, according to special statutes devised and confirmed by me, according to Her Majesty's Grant in that behalf. Also, I desire the President and Warden to have special care of keeping the Library, a true and perfect Inventory of the Books given and bestowed on the same, hoping that my Brethren the Pastors there, having sometimes a reasonable use of the said Books in the said Library, will see that there will be no lack of preaching in St. Peter's Church of Ruthin, or any other in that Deanery where they may do good.

Item. I do give to the Warden of Christ's Hospital in Ruthin, and his Successors for ever, all my Houshold Stuffe, viz: Beddings, Brass, Pewter, Spits, and Linen, with a double white Silver Salt now remaining at Cheswick, provided that the Warden do there enter into sufficient Bond for the preservation of the same to his Successors there, according to the discretion of Mr. Doctor Dunne and Mr. Serjeant Williams.

Item. I do give to the Warden of Christ's Hospital in Ruthin, and his Successors for ever, one of my Gowns and Cassock, at the discretion of my Executors.

Item. I do will that every one of the Poor of the Hospital shall have Black at the time of my Burial, whensoever it shall please GOD to appoint the same.

Item. I will and do give to the President and Warden of the said Hospital forty pounds, to set the Poor of the Town of Ruthin and of the Parish of Llanrhydd on work, by the advice of Edward Thelwall, Esq. John Thelwall of Bathafarn Park, and Edward Goodman, and their Heirs, being of lawful and full age.

Item. I do give to the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor, to be employed to the use of the Poor, according to their discretion, viz: to St. Margaret's Parish in Westminster, forty shillings; St. Martin's in the Field, twenty shillings; St. Clement's Parish, twenty shillings; St. Giles's in the Field, twenty shillings; St. Bride's in Fleet Street, twenty shillings; St. Buttolph's without, Aldersgate, twentysix shillings and eight-pence; St. Martin's le Grand, whereof part in St. Leonard's, and part in St. Anne's, twenty-six shillings and eight-pence; Cheswick Parish in Middlesex, whereof forty shillings already bestowed to set the Poor on work, and twenty-eight shillings more, the sum total three pounds; Chertsey Parish in Middlesex, twenty shillings; Wimbleton Parish, in the County of Surry, twenty-six shillings and eight-pence; South Luffnam Parish, in the County of Rutland, forty shillings; Ruthin and Llanrhydd and Llanfwrog Parishes, in the County of Denbigh, equally to be divided, forty shillings.

Item. I do give to the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of Waddeston and their Successors, to set the Poor on work, the sum of five pounds.

Item. I do give to my Lord Burleigh, (eldest Son and Heir apparent of the late Lord Treasurer, my late good Lord and Master), two Pictures, the one of his Father, the other of my Lady and Mistress, which are in the Gallery Chamber.

Item, I give to my Honourable Lady, his Wife, a Picture of the Lady Margaret, Countess of Richmond and Derby, which is in my Gallery.

Item. I do give and bequeath to the Right Honourable Sir Robert Cecili, Knight, second Son to my said Lord, by the late Lady Burleigh of blessed memory, a Protoyne in Gold.

Item. I do give to Mr. William Cecill, Son and Heir to Sir Robert Cecill, and Grand Child to my Lord Treasurer, a Ring of thirty shillings value.

Item. I do give and bequeath unto Gawen Goodman, my eldest Brother, a

Bible in Latin, in folio, quarto, or octavo, a Ring of Gold, with this fratrum," a Cassock of Satin furred, and a Satin Doublet.

Item. I give to Edward Goodman, his eldest Son and Heir, a Bible in Latin, and a Serjeant's Ring, with this posy, viz: "Lex Reipublicæ Vita," and a Cup with the brims and bottom, all gilt, with my Arms engraven on it.

Item. I do give to my Cousin, his Wife, the best Ring, with a Turkey Stone. Item. I do give to his Son, Gabriel Goodman, (my God-son and Nephew), a Ring of Gold, with G. G. engraven on it, with my Arms, 1576.

Item. I do give to every one of the Daughters of Edward Goodman, half-adozen of Silver Spoons, at forty shillings value.

Item. I do give to Mildred Goodman, Daughter of Edward Goodman, a piece of Plate, of the value of three pounds, given to me by my late Lady and Mistress, Mildred Burleigh.

Item. I do give to Godfrey Goodman, second Son of my said eldest Brother, a Bible in Latin.

Item. I do give to Thomas Goodman, the third Son of my said Brother, the Psalms of David, with the Proverbs of Solomon, and others annexed to that, in Latin, the big Serjeant's Ring, with this posy, "Lege firmatur solum," my own Nag which I ride on, trusting in GOD that he will shew himself a faithful Officer unto the College, who, I doubt not, will consider of him accordingly.

Item. I do give to Dorothy Roberts, Daughter to my said Brother, a piece of Gold of the value of fifteen shillings.

Item. I do give to Catherine Salusbury, his second Daughter, a piece of Gold of the value of fifteen shillings.

Item. I give Gabriel, her Son, forty shillings.

Item. I give to my Sister-in-law, Jane Thelwall, a Ring of Gold with a red Stone, and another Ring which my Mother gave me, with this posy, "Concordia

fratrum."

Item. I give to Gabriel Goodman, eldest Son of my late Brother Godfrey, deceased, and Jane Thelwall now living, (his Wife), a Latin Bible, a Ring of Gold
