PREFACE

TO THE

ENGLISH EDITION.

THE present work is the first-fruits of the efforts recently commenced and still vigorously prosecuted for transplanting into the field of American Theology the most select and valuable of those productions which, of late years, have appeared in Germany in the higher. department of Biblical Literature. Sensible of the incalculable mischief which has resulted to the study of Divine Revelation, as well as to that of profane science, from the licentious and unbridled spirit of the transcendental philosophy, the learned translator, and his able coadjutors, have been careful to separate the precious from the vile; and while they have not scrupled to reject with merited abhorrence the absurd theories of a profane imagination, they have been forward to seize on whatever appeared worthy of regard, and have thus put their countrymen in possession of some of the most important results to which we have been conducted by the philological discoveries of the latter half of last century.

The first work published by Mr. Stuart (in 1821) was a Hebrew Grammar, presenting, in somewhat a condensed form, the acquisitions which Hebrew
