coming Serioufnefs and Attention: Sin would flee before you, and we fhould fee Satan fall from Heaven as Lightning". It is the Devil's Artifice to keep the Bible from the Common People. He knows, he well knows, that his Kingdom cannot ftand, if Mankind in general could be prevailed upon to study and regard the Sacred Writings. O therefore get Bibles; Young and Old, get Bibles. Read them with humble, earnest Prayer to God for the en lightening Influences of his Holy Spirit to en able you to understand them. Read to prac tice; read to obey. Read to mend the Heart; not merely to fill the Head. There; there you will find eternal Torments; endless Horror and amazing Woe, laid up for the Drunkard, the Whoremonger, the Swearer, the Extortioner, the Unjuft, the Covetous, the Proud, the Unconverted. There you will discover, that the True Chriftian is a very different Character from what the World generally calls, “A Good Sort of Man". According to the Bible, The True Chriftian is poor in Spirit; meek and lowly in Heart: He mourns under a Senfe of

his Imperfections; he hungers and thirfts after Righteousness; he is merciful; he is peaceable; he is pure in Heart: He feeks in the first Place, and above all other Things, the Kingdom of GOD and the Righteousness thereof; and having his Treasure in Heaven, his Heart, his Affections, his Defires, are there alfo. He is diligent in Business; yet anxiously careful for Nothing. He has been converted from the Error of his Ways: He has experienced "a Death unto Sin, and a New Birth unto Righteousness". He believes in Chrift; refts his Soul upon Him, and upon Him alone, for Sal- ́ vation and Acceptance with GOD; and he is holy in all Manner of Conversation.

The True Chriftian is no Drunkard; no Swearer; no Sabbath-Breaker; no Whoremonger; no Extortioner; no Liar and Slanderer; no Backbiter; no Evil Speaker: Thefe, with many other fuch like, the Bible abfolutely declares to be inconfiftent with the Character of a Chriftian, and with a State of Favor and Acceptance with GOD.

But, are we all fuch Chriftians? Are not fe

veral of you Gentlemen of the Club, in particular, guilty of many wicked Practices? Are not Drunkenness, Swearing, Whoredom, and such like Crimes, the very Things in which you glory? Yet, does not your 18th. Article say, That no fcandalous Perfon fhall be admitted, or continued in your Society? Now is not a common Drunkard, a prophane Swearer, and fuch like, a scandalous Perfon? And if you have fuch Perfons among you, does it not become the Clerk, Warden, and stewards, to enquire into the Matter, and to exclude fuch scandalous Members? Want of Difcipline is the Ruin of all Societies. I beseech you therefore, if you wish to see your Society flourish and profper, put your Laws in Execution. Encourage the good, reprove the bad, and exclude the fcandalous Members: So fhall you grow and increase, and the Bleffing of GOD will be upon you.

But, O Sirs! I would gladly recommend the Gospel of Chrift to your ferious Notice, and Regard. You are careful, you are laudably careful, to make Provifion for your Bodies: Be not lefs careful concerning your immortal Part.

A Stock you are laying up against Sickness and Death: O lay up a Stock alfo against Judgment and Eternity: Then, then all human Expedi-. ents will fail; and they, and they alone, who are Christians indeed, fhall find Salvation with GOD. "Lay not up then for yourselves Treafures upon Earth, where Moth and Ruft doth corrupt, and where Thieves break through and fteal: But lay up for yourselves Treasures in Heaven, where neither Moth nor Ruft doth corrupt, and where Thieves do not break through nor fteal. Dare to be fingularly virtuous: Run counter to a vain, infatuated World: Heaven will make Amends for all your. Trials here below. "Jefus, will present you faultlefs before the Throne of GOD, and we fhall ferve him Day and Night in his Temple; and he that fitteth on the Throne fhall dwell among us. We fhall hunger no more, neither thirst any more"; neither fhall the Wicked any more annoy us. "For the Lamb which is in the Midst of the Throne, fhall feed us, and lead us unto living Fountains of Waters; and GOD fhall wipe away all Tears from our Eyes. Fight then the good Fight of Faith; lay hold" on eternal Life”.

"Now unto the King Eternal, Immortal, Invifible, the Only Wife GoD, be Glory in the Church by Chrift Jefus, throughout all Ages," World without End. AMEN".

"I neither envy nor difpife any that are of the fame Func**tion with me. Nay, I know many among the Clergy to "whom I think myself unworthy to do the meanest Service. "But I know many likewife, whofe Conversation is not at "all conformable to the Pattern Chrift hath fet us. And for "those I heartily pray that GOD would fhew them the "Things that belong to their eternal Peace. Neither is my "Heart in the least incensed against them that most unjustly "flander and reproach me. But I compaffionate them, fince "we must all one Day appear before the fame Judge. For my Part I cannot call Black White; nor take him for a "Follower of Chrift, and a Pattern of his Flock, in whom "I find Nothing of the Mind that was in Christ.
