their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

Jesus cried, and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me: And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

MATT. XXI.

V. 17.

And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany, and he lodged there.

LESSON CCLXVI.

The barren Fig-tree.—Jesus a second Time drives out the Traders. -Monday before the Crucifixion.

V. 12-13.

MARK XI. | And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry: And seeing a fig-tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.

15 And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money16 changers, and the seats of them that sold doves; And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel 17 through the temple. And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called, of all nations, the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves. 18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how

they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all 19 the people was astonished at his doctrine. And when even was come, he went out of the city.

LESSON CCLXVII.

The Chief Priests and others question Jesus.-Tuesday before the
Crucifixion.

20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the
21 fig-tree dried up from the roots. And Peter calling to
remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig-tree
which thou cursedst is withered away.
And Jesus an-

I say unto you,
That whosoever shall say unto this moun-

shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those
things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have
whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What

praying, forgive, if ye have aught against any that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

27 And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things and who gave

thee this authority to do these things? And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me. And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him? But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed. 83 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

LESSON CCLXVIII

Parable of the two Sons and of the Householder.- Tuesday before the Crucifixion, continued.

MATT. XXI.

83

But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work today in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise.

said, I go, sir: and went not.

And he answered and Whether of them twain

did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first.
Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the
publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God be-
fore you.
For John came unto you in the way of right-
eousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and
the harlots believed him and ye, when ye had seen it,
repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

:

Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a wine-press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far coun84 try: And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants,

and beat one, and killed another, and stored another. 8 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and 87 they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will 45 grind him to powder. And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he 48 spake of them. But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.

LESSON CCLXIX.

Parable of the Marriage of the King's Son.-Tuesday before the Crucifixion, continued.

MATT. XXII.

V. 1-2.

4

And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and

my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto 5 the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their 6 ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise. servants, and entreated them spite

And

the remnant took his fully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed 8 those murderers, and burned up their city. Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which 9 were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the mar10 riage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good and the wedding was furnished with guests.

11

And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw 12 there a man which had not on a wedding garment: And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. 13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness: 14 there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen.

LESSON CCLXX.

Tribute to Cæsar.-Tuesday before the Crucifixion, continued.

15

Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they 16 might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cæsar, or 18 not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, 19 Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute
