Since that time, the interest for this branch of education has been rapidly increasing, and frequent inquiries have been made respecting a subject much esteemed for its expected salutary effects, but little known as to its particulars.

In this way alone the back can be drawn in, the shoulders recede, and a firm and noble posture of the body be effected. Hands flat upon the hips, the thumb backwards, the fingers forward. Keeping the hands so prevents an unsteady wavering motion of the body. Lips close.

The different exercises of this kind consist either in preserving that position, or in moving in it, wherein the hands either assist, or rest close to the body. All of them are extremely strengthening to the joints of the back.
