II.

E not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; For when he dieth he shall carry nothing

away: his glory shall not descend after him. Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.

He shall go to the generation of his fathers: they shall never see light.

Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

IT

III.

[Psalm xlix. 16-20.]

T is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely. The LORD doth build up: he gathereth together the outcasts.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

IV.

[Psalm cxlvii. 1—3.]

TASTE and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

V.

[Psalm xxxiv. 8, 9.]

ABOVE all things Truth beareth away the

victory.

[1 Esdras iii. 12.]

VI.

THE steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.

Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for [Psalm xxxvii. 23-27.]

evermore.

VII.

THE HE LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? [Psalm xxvii. 1.]

VIII.

THOU, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.

IX.

[Psalm lxxi. 20, 21.]

EVIL shall slay the wicked: and they that

hate the righteous shall be desolate.

The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants : and none of them that trust in him shall

be desolate.

[Psalm xxxiv. 21, 22.]

X.

THOU desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it thou delightest not in burnt offering.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

[Psalm li. 16, 17.]

Counsel.

I.

SEEK not out the things that are too hard for thee, neither search the things that are above thy strength.

But what is commanded thee, think thereupon with reverence; for it is not needful for thee to see with thine eyes the things that are in secret.

Be not curious in unnecessary matters: for more things are shewed unto thee than men understand.

For many are deceived by their own vain opinion; and an evil suspicion hath overthrown their judgment.

II.

[Ecclus. iii. 21-24.]

CONSULT not with one that suspecteth

thee: and hide thy counsel from such as

envy thee.

[Ecclus. xxxvii. 10.]

ᎠᎬ

III.

ELIGHT thyself also in the LORD; and
he shall give thee the desires of thine
heart.
[Psalm xxxvii. 4.]

IV.

LOVE thy friend, and be faithful unto him but if thou bewrayest his secrets, follow no more after him.

For as a man hath destroyed his enemy; so hast thou lost the love of thy neighbour. [Ecclus. xxvii. 17.]

V.

ENVY not the glory of a sinner: for thou

knowest not what shall be his end.

[Ecclus. ix. 11.]

VI.

EEK not death in the error of

your

life:

SEEK

and pull not upon yourselves destruction with the works of your hands.

God made not death: neither hath he pleasure in the destruction of the living.

CH

VII.

[Wisdom i. 12, 13.]

HANGE not a friend for any good by no means; neither a faithful brother for the gold of Ophir.

OPEN

VIII.

[Ecclus. vi. 18.]

PEN not thine heart to every man, lest he requite thee with a shrewd turn.

[Ecclus. viii. 19.]

BE

IX.

E not greedy to add money to money: but let it be as refuse in respect of our child.

For that which the Lord hath given us to live with doth suffice us.

FOR

X.

[Tobit v. 18, 19.]

'OR as it is hurtful to drink wine or water
alone; and as wine mingled with water
is pleasant, and delighteth the taste:
even so speech finely framed delighteth
the ears.
[2 Maccabees xv. 39.]

XI.

WHEN thou hast enough, remember the time of hunger: and when thou art rich, think upon poverty and need.

XII.

[Ecclus. xviii. 25.]

WHETHER it be to friend or foe, talk

not of other men's lives; and if thou canst without offence, reveal them not. For he heard and observed thee, and when time cometh he will hate thee.

If thou hast heard a word, let it die with thee. [Ecclus. xix. 8, 9.]

LE

XIII.

ET thy mind be upon the ordinances of
the LORD, and meditate continually in
his commandments: he shall establish
thine heart, and give thee wisdom at
thine own desire.
[Ecclus. vi. 37.]
