33 And Samuel faid, As thy fword hath made women childless, fo fhall thy mother be childle's among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his houfe to Gibeah of Saul.

35 And Samuel came no more to fee Saul until the day of his death: neverthelefs, Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Ifrael.

CHAP. XVI.

Samuel fent by God under pretence of a facrifice, cometh to Beth-lehem, 11 and anointeth David.

Nd the LORD faid unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, feeing I have rejected him from reigning over Ifrael?fill thine horn with oyl, and go, I will fend thee to Jeffe the Beth-lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his fons.

2 And Samuel faid, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD faid, Take an heifer with thee, and fay, I am come to facrifice to the LORD.

3 And call Jeffe to the facrifice, and I will thew thee what thon fhalt do: and

Goliath defieth Ifrael

5 And he faid, Peaceably: I am come Jeffe the Beth-lehemite, that is cunning to facrifice unto the LORD: fan&tifie in playing, and a mighty valiant man, your felves, and come with me to the and a man of war, and prudent in mat facrifice. 19 Wherefore Saul fent meffengers unto Jeffe, and faid, Send me David thy fon, which is with the fheep.

20 And Jeffe took an afs laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and fent them by David his fon unto Saul.

21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer,

22 And Saul fent to Jeffe, faying, Let David, I pray thee, ftand before me : for he hath found favour in my fight.

23 And it came to pass when the evil fpirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp and played with his hand: fo Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

10 Again, Jeffe made feven of his fons to pafs before Samuel : and Samuel faid unto Jeffe, The LORD hath not chofen 1 these.

11 And Samuel faid unto Jeffe, Are here all thy children? And he faid, There remaineth yet the youngeft, and behold, he keepeth the fheep. And Samuel faid unto Jeffe, Send and fetch him: for we will not fit down till he come hither.

12 And he fent and brought him in Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD faid, Arise, a noint him: for this is he.

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oyl, and anointed him in the midft of his brethren and the fpirit of the LORD came upon David, from that day forward: fo Samuel rofe up and went to Ramah.

14 But the fpirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. 17

15 And Sauls fervants faid unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

16 Let our lord now command thy fervants which are before thee, to feek out a man who is a cunning player on an harp and it fhall come to pafs when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he fhall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

17 And Saul faid unto his fervants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18 Then anfwered one of the fervants, and faid, Behold, I have seen a fop of

The armies of the Ifraelites and Phili fines being ready to battle, 4 Goliath cometh proudly forth to challenge a combat: 12 David fent by his father to visit his brethren, accepteth the challenge.

Ow the Philiftines gathered toge

ther their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

2 And Saul and the men of Ifrael were | gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and fet the battle in aray against the Philistines.

3 And the Philiftines flood on a mountain on the one fide, and Ifrael ftood on a mountain on the other fide: and there was a valley between them.

4 And there went out a champion our of the camp of the Philiftines, named Goliath of Gath, whofe height was fix cubits and a span.

And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail and the weight of the coat was five thousand fhekels of brafs.

6 And he had greaves of brafs upon his legs, and a target of brass between his fhoulders.

7 And the staff of his fpear was like a weavers beam, and his fpears head weigh ed fix hundred fhekels of iron and one bearing a fhield, went before him.

8 And he ftood and cried unto the armies of Ifrael, and faid unto them, Why are re come out to let your battle in aray?

26 And David (pake to the men that food by him, faying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Phili ftine, and taketh away the reproach from Ifrael? for who is this uncircumcifed Philiftine, that he should defie the armies of the living God?

27. And the people answered him af ter this manner, faying, So fhall it be done to the man that killeth him.

28 And Eliab his eldeft brother heard when he spake unto the men ; and Eliabs anger was kindled against David, and he faid, Why cameft thou down hither? and with whom haft thou left thofe few sheep in the wilderness? 1 know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down, that thou mightft fee the battle.

29 And David faid, What have I now done? Is there not a caufe?

130 And he turned from him to wards another, and fpake after the fame manner and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31 And when the words were heard which David (pake, they rehearsed them before Saul and he fent for him.

32And David faid to Saul, Let no mans heart fail because of him; thy fer vant will go and fight with thisPhiliftine

33 And Saul faid to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philiftine, to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and hea man of war from his youth.

34 And David faid unto Saul, Thy fervant kept his Fathers fheep, and there came a lion and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock.ds

35 And I went out after him, and fmote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arofe against me, I caught him by his beard, and more him, and flew him.

36 Thy fervant flew both the lion

39 And David girded his fword upon his armor, and he affayed to go, for he had not proved it; and David faid unto Saul, I cannot go with thefe for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.

40 And he took his ftaff in his hand, and chofe him five smooth ftones out of the brook, and put them in a fhepherds bag which he had, even in a fcrip, and his fling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philiftine.

41 And the Philiftine came on and drew near unto David, and the man that bare the fhield went before him.

42 And when the Philiftine looked about and faw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.

43 And the Philiftine faid unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comeft to me with ftaves and the Philiftine curfed David by his gods.

44 And the Philiftine faid to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beafts of the field.

45 Then faid David to the Philiftine, Thou comeft to me with a fword, and with a fpear, and with a fhield; but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hofts, the God of the armies of If rael, whom thou haft defied.

and took thence a ftone, and flang it, and fmote the Philiftine in his forehead, that the ftone funk into his forehead and he fell upon his face to the earth

50 So David prevailed over the Phi liftine with a fling, and with a ftone, and fmore the Philiftine, and flew him; but there was no fword in the hand of David.

51 Therefore David ran and ftood upon the Philiftine, and took his fword, and drew it out of the theath thereof,and flew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philiftines faw their champion was dead, they fled...

52 And the men of Ifrael and of Ju dah arofe and fhouted, and pursued the Philiftines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron: and the wounded of the Philiftines fell down by the way to Sharaim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

53 And the children of Ifrael returned from chafing after the Philiftines, and they spoiled their tents.

54 And David took the head of the Philiftine, and brought it to Jerufalem; but he put his armor in his tent.

55 And when Saul faw David go forth againft the Philiftine, he faid unto Abner the captain of the hoft, Abner, whofe fon is this youth? And Abner faid, As thy foul liveth, O king, I can nottell.

56 And the king faid, Enquire thou whofe fon the ftripling is.

57 And as David returned from the flaughter of the Philiftine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philiftine in his hand.

58 And Saul faid to him, Whofe fon art thou, thou young man? And David anfwered, I am the fon of thy fervant Jeffe the Beth-lehemite.

CHAP. XVIII.
