PREFACE TO THE EIGHTH EDITION. THE HE gratifying success of this work on both sides of the Atlantic, and the fact that it has been accepted as an authority by the later writers upon London, serve to warrant its appearance in a new and illustrated form. It has been carefully revised for this Edition; a number of Supplementary Notes have been added by way of Appendix; and, as far as possible, it has been brought down to the present day. It is felt that the many portraits now for the first time printed with it, will give it new interest and value in the eyes of all lovers of London and of her literary associations. JANUARY 1, 1892.
