PRE FACE

A

S the Fifth and last Volume of my Prie
mitive Christianity Reviv’d, I here pub-
lish my Translation of the Recognitions

of Clement, or The Travels of Peter,

for the use of the English Reader. And as I

am most assured of the sacred Authority of what

Books and Doctrines I have already recommend-

ed to the World, so am I well persuaded of the

no small Authority of what I now recommend.)

And in order to prepare the Reader for reaping

the benefit of this Work, I shall here say some-

what on the several Heads following.

I. I shall set down the original Translator Rua

forus's Accounts of, and Preface to this Book. I

say, the Translator's Accounts and Preface only;

since that is all now to be expected: nothing but

that Translation remaining.

II. I shall shew that the main Contents of this

Book appear to be deriv'd from the Companions

of the Apofles themselves, and so that it gene-

Tally includes original Christian Doctrines and

Rules deriv'd from those Apostles.

III. I shall few that it was wsitten, at the

lowest, in the former part of the second Centu-

ry it self.

IV. That it was not intended as intirely a true

History of Facts, or as written by Clement himself,
