We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

That it may please Thee to enlarge our hearts with true charity one towards another, that we may feed the hungry, clothe the naked, comfort the distressed, and on all occasions do good to every one according to our capacities;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

That it may please Thee to bestow on us the necessities of this life, with grace to use Thy temporal mercies, not merely for our own pleasure, but to Thy glory;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

And that Thou wouldst vouchsafe us Thy grace always to remember the end of our creation, and the vanity of the world, the shortness of our lives, and the uncertainty of our death, the misery of such as die in their sins, and the unspeakable happiness of those who die at peace with Thee;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,
Graciously hear us, and have mercy upon us.

O Lord, hear our prayer,

And let our cry come unto Thee.

If it be the season of Advent, Lent, or Ember-Days, here may follow the special Prayers which are to be said during those seasons (see pages 48, 49).

Then he says the following Thanksgiving Prayer:

ALMIGHTY God, who observest all the actions, thoughts, and secret motions of our hearts, and who watchest over us with an incomparable love, every moment bestowing favours and shielding us from evil, blessed be Thy holy name: and may all creatures bless Thy goodness for the benefits we have ever received from Thee, especially during the night past; but above all for the surpassing riches of Thy mercy in creating and preserving, redeeming and sanctifying us. And Lord, we

beseech Thee, never permit us to be so base and wicked as to repay Thy bounties with ingratitude, or Thy blessings with offences and injuries; but inflame our reins and hearts with the fire of Thy holy Spirit, that we may serve Thee with a chaste body, and please Thee with a clean heart; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then he says the two Collects following, and Prayer for a

blessing.

WE pray Thee, O Lord, graciously continue to visit this

house and family; drive far from it all snares of the enemy; and keep us in peace and safety through this day; for the sake of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

ASSIST, we beseech thee, O Lord, our actions by Thy holy

inspirations, and carry them on by Thy gracious assistance, that every prayer and work of ours may begin always from Thee, and by Thee may happily be ended; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY EVENINGS.

All standing, the head of the family (or the priest or deacon, if present) says:

. Turn Thou us, O God our Saviour. Ry. And let Thine anger cease from us.

. O God, make speed to save us.

R. O Lord, make haste to help us.

. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

Ry. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Then he says one of the following Psalms:

The blessings of godliness.

that therein is the compass of the world, and they that dwell therein.

For He hath founded it upon the seas and prepared it upon the floods.

Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord or who shall rise up in His holy place?

Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity, nor sworn to deceive his neighbour.

He shall receive the blessing from the Lord : and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

This is the generation of them that seek him even of them that seek thy face, O Jacob.

The words of his mouth are unrighteous, and full of deceit : he hath left off to behave himself wisely, and to do good.

He imagineth mischief upon his bed, and hath set himself in no good way : neither doth he abhor any thing that is evil.

Thy mercy, O Lord, reacheth unto the heavens and Thy faithfulness unto the clouds.

Thy righteousness standeth like the strong mountains: Thy judgments are like the great deep,

For I remembered Thine everlasting judgments, O Lord and received comfort.

I am horribly afraid for the ungodly that forsake Thy law.

Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

I have thought upon Thy name, O Lord, in the night-season and have kept Thy law.

This I had because I kept Thy commandments.

Shew me Thy ways, O Lord : and teach me Thy paths.

Lead me forth in Thy truth, and learn me for Thou art the God of my salvation; in Thee hath been my hope all the day long.

Call to remembrance, O Lord, Thy tender mercies and Thy loving-kindnesses, which have been ever of old.

O remember not the sins and offences of my youth but according to Thy mercy think Thou upon me, O Lord, for Thy goodness.

Mine eyes are ever looking unto the Lord for He shall pluck my feet out of the net.

Turn Thee unto me, and have mercy upon me : for I am desolate, and in misery.

The sorrows of my heart are enlarged O bring Thou me out of my troubles.

Look upon my adversity and misery and forgive me all my sin. Consider mine enemies, how many they are and they bear a tyrannous hate against me.

O keep my soul, and deliver me : let me not be confounded, for I have put my trust in Thee.

When my spirit was in heaviness Thou knewest my path: in the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.

I looked also upon my right hand and saw there was no man that would know me.

I had no place to flee unto : and no man cared for my soul.

I cried unto Thee, O Lord, and said: Thou art my hope, and my portion in the land of the living. Consider my complaint for I

am brought very low.

O deliver me from my persecutors for they are too strong for me.

PSALM 143.

H consider my desire: hearken EAR my prayer, O Lord, and unto me for Thy truth and right

And enter not into judgment with Thy servant : for in Thy sight shall no man living be justified.

For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground: he hath laid me in the darkness, as the men that have been long dead.

Therefore is my spirit vexed within me and my heart within me is desolate.

Yet do I remember the time

past; I muse upon all Thy works : yea, I exercise myself in the works of Thy hands.

I stretch forth my hands unto Thee my soul gaspeth unto Thee as a thirsty land.

Hear me, O Lord, and that soon, for my spirit waxeth faint hide not Thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
