Si les chasses offrent quelquefois du danger pour les chasseurs, elles sont souvent pour les chiens de véritables combats, où plusieurs d'entre eux périssent victimes de leur audace.

Snyders s'est distingué par la manière grande et vraie dont il a traité les animaux, la touche fière dont il les a caractérisés, suivant leur espèce différente. La variété de ses compositions, la facilité de son pinceau, la vigueur de son coloris, l'ont rendu digne d'associer quelquefois son talent à celui de Rubens. Ses tableaux n'ont cependant pas moins de mérite lorsqu'il y a travaillé seul, et l'on cite de ce maître un grand nombre de chasses qui sont véritablement des chefsd'œuvre; celui-ci est du nombre. Le combat que se livrent les ours et les chiens est d'une étonnante vérité d'action. Le paysage est aussi d'une grande beauté.

Ce grand tableau fut acheté à Venise, par Jean Udney, qui l'envoya à Londres, où il fut payé très cher par lord Grosvenor. Il est placé maintenant dans son hôtel, sur la cheminée de la salle à manger. Il a été gravé par J. Fittler. Larg. 10 pieds 3 pouces; haut. 6 pieds 3 pouces.

The chace is sometimes attended with danger to the hunters, but to the dogs, it is often an occasion of serious battles, in which many of them are the victims of their courage.

Snyders is distinguished for truth and grandeur of manner in representing animals, and for the bold spirited touch with which he characterizes their different species. The richness of his invention, the facility of his pencil, and the viguour of his colouring, rendered him worthy of sometimes associating his talent, in the same compositions with Rubens. But those which he executed alone are not less deserving of praise, and many of his hunting-matches are cousidered as master-pieces. Of the number is the one under consideration, in which the combat of the dogs and bears is represented with surprising truth, and in which the landscape is of admirable beauty.

This picture was purchased at Venice, by John Udney, and sent to London, where it was sold for a considerable sum to Lord Grosvenor; over the chimney of whose dining room it now hangs. It has been engraved by J. Fittler.
